| Fifteen years before the clergy sex abuse scandal came to light, Archbishop Roger M. Mahony and a top advisor plotted to conceal child molestation by priests from law enforcement, including keeping them out of California to avoid prosecution, according to internal Catholic church records released Monday. The archdiocese´s failure to purge pedophile clergy and reluctance to cooperate with law enforcement has previously been known. But the memos written in 1986 and 1987 by Mahony and Msgr. Thomas J. Curry, then the archdiocese´s chief advisor on sex abuse cases, offer the strongest evidence yet of a concerted effort by officials

Mahony vigorously fought the release of these records.

Oh by all means, let´s drag out records to something that occurred over 20 years ago, was corrected and hasn´t occurred since to continue to bludgeon the Catholic church! This couldn´t possibly have anything to do with the HHS mandate and being sued by the Catholic church now could it?

And it´s about time we all stop dancing around the elephant in the room. Call these priests what they are. Homosexuals, not pedophiles.

How can an LDotter go into relativism on this kind of perversion and attempts to protect the perverts from law enforcement?
This is not the Catholic Church. The parishioners were kept in the dark.
We must get to the point that all leaders - whether in government, churches, universities, whatever - are not above the law when it comes to child abuse.
More than 30 priests. In this diocese alone. And some are still out there, having been aided in their flight by Mahony.
This is wrong.

Re #3, there were numerous cases of abuse of young girls among these priests. Look up "pedophilia". It is not synonymous with homosexuality, which is about adults.

Time to bring the catholic leadership to the courts and punish them under the law for the abuse, sexual molestation and rape they hide for decades. These folks moved these priests from parish to parish allow them to molest and abuse more and more children. The catholic higher ups believed then and still now they are not bound by the law - well you are and should be all sent to prison for conspiracy and failure to report. This church has lost all moral authority.

"This church has lost all moral authority."
How can it lose all moral authority when it tells its members that it IS the moral authority? If you are or remain a Roman Catholic, you by default affirm that the Church is your moral authority, and its dogmas are binding on you.

It is a matter of Homosexuals and not pedophiles. Some priests are that, but most are not. The incidence of sexual abuse in the Catholic Priesthood is significantly less than the incidence of sexual abuse by public school teachers.

Defending the church is ridiculous. Is it ONLY the catholic church that is molesting children? Of course not! However leaders (probably including the Pope) in the Catholic church went to extremes to protect molesters from the courts and the justice system. Mahony was given a position in the Vatican just as indictments were about to be issued by Los Angeles legal authorities. He is safe in Vatican City while this mess unspools in the states.
If you are a parent and you are not incensed by what the church did YOU are part of the problem!

While giving the commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy, Vice President Joe Biden confused Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy with Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. This is a particular embarrassing mix-up for Biden, seeing as he recently worked closely with Malloy on gun reform measures.

New Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz doesn’t want to spend his tenure battling over climate science. “Let me make it very clear that there is no ambiguity in terms of the scientific basis calling for a prudent response on climate change,” Moniz told Energy Department employees shortly after his swearing-in. “I am not interested in debating what is not debatable,” Moniz said in his remarks at the Tuesday ceremony. “There is plenty to debate as we try and move forward on our climate agenda.”

Among the criteria by which the Internal Revenue Service selected groups in for its political targeting program in 2012 was "educating on the constitution and bill of rights" (lowercase in original), according to the Inspector General´s Report. Lois Lerner, who directs the office at the center of that effort, has received her own education in the Constitution.(Snip)Josh Marshall, proprietor of TalkingPointsMemo.com, concedes that Lerner "has every right" to invoke the Fifth Amendment "and may be wise to do so. But that´s a decision that simply is not consistent with her remaining in her job.

CINCINNATI, OH - The claim that the ongoing IRS scandal is limited to low level employees is falling apart. The six Cincinnati workers we have identified, who sent scrutinizing letters to conservative groups with words including "patriot, liberty, tea party or 9-12" in their names are Mitchel Steele, Carly Young, Joseph Herr, Stephen Seok, Liz Hofacre and a woman identified only as Ms. Richards. (Snip) Because all six of our IRS workers have different individual and territory managers, Cindy Thomas is one manager they all have common.

We can now officially call the Obama administration besieged. One of President Obama´s underlings is set to plead her Fifth Amendment Right against self-incrimination in the burgeoning IRS scandal. The Los Angeles Times broke the story: Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won´t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening - or why she didn´t disclose it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor III. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.

Apple is one of America´s most profitable companies. And it pays a substantial income tax bill to the U.S. government -- by its own account, $6 billion in 2012 and an estimated $7 billion this year. But many tax experts and lawmakers say Apple´s tax bill should be bigger. A lot bigger. The concern is that Apple (Snip), while complying with U.S. laws, is nevertheless taking advantage of loopholes in the tax code to shift a substantial amount of income to offshore subsidiaries in low-tax countries. The result is billions of dollars in profits every year that go untaxed.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
