| LOS ANGELES — Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony and other top Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles officials maneuvered behind the scenes to shield molester priests, provide damage control for the church and keep parishioners in the dark, according to church personnel files. The confidential records filed in a lawsuit against the archdiocese disclose how the church handled abuse allegations for decades and also reveal dissent from a top Mahony aide who criticized his superiors for covering up allegations of abuse rather than protecting children.
|
Comments: In a public statement issued yesterday, Mahony now apologizing and saying that he has been "naive about the lasting impacts of abuse."
A few years ago the Los Angeles Times did an extensive investigation into the 30-some Los Angeles diocese priests who had been accused of abuse. It was published over four days with detailed reports on each and their photographs and what had been done with them or where they had fled. This did not move Mahony one inch toward doing the right thing. Instead he hired a PR company that does damage control.

Roger Cardinal Mahoney? Covering up stuff like a cat in a cat box? Nah! Glad he´s finally retired. Nasty little man. Good riddance.

Here´s the problem:
* The RC Church teaches that when a person is ordained, their soul is indelibly marked. It is very rare to defrock a priest and "remove" this mark. * Only priests (including higher-ups like bishops, etc.) have the power to confect the Eucharist and change the bread and wine into Christ´s body and blood. It is essential to Catholics´ salvation to partake of the Eucharist. "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves." (John 6:53) * To defrock a priest or remove him from church service and services, even a very bad priest, is to deprive a part of the flock of the essential means by which they can receive Christ, for the sins of the priest have no detrimental effect on the efficacy of the sacraments. * Thus it is considered better for the eternal salvation of the members of the Church to keep employing a priest than to remove or defrock him, especially with the shortage of priests.
This warped doctrine of the priesthood and the Eucharist explains a lot about the Church´s reluctance or inability to address this problem, among others.

And to think that this whole time I thought the problem was homosexual pedophiles infiltrating the church.
1.5% of the population - 20-40% of molestations. When is this going to stop?

The catholic church has lost all moral authority due to this abuse and the coverup engineered by church higher ups. Rather than turning over the abusers to law enforcement they moved them from parish to parish allowing their "brothers" to abuse and violate more and more children. This has happened all over the world not just in the US. This church needs to be held reasonable for their deeds and not allowed to continue to sweep this and other abuses under the vatican rug!

Boy the anti-Catholics are on a roll now!! That said, I think Mahoney should retire to a Carthusian monastery and repent in sackcloth and ashes for the rest of his life. On a diet of bread and water.
He was a HUGE liberal.

One only has to read The Catechism of the Catholic Church to become anti-Catholic.

Reply #4 has it right. This is a great opportunity to bash the Catholic Church but we should all be kind to the homosexuals who also bash the church for teaching that their practices are unnatural. The church is in trouble for not for being hostile but too friendly to homosexuals.

The pedophiles in the church were merely ahead of their time. The left not only supports this practice it promotes it. How many dead Americans to instill the leftist ideology did Alinsky suggest?

Mahoney illustrated the cult-like nature of the Church by lying smoothly and repeatedly to parents, Authorities and other Church members to allow his priests to continue to sexually abuse children. Ratzinger showed the same arrogant mindset when he was in charge of the Dead Sea scrolls translation; stuff that didn´t support Catholic dogma simply disappeared.

It is not bashing to tell the truth about something. The Catholic church has covered their dirty dealings up for a very long time. It is just that with the internet, sins are now more easily exposed. And #7 is spot on. Rewriting the 10 commandments would do it for me.

We live in Los Angeles County. No one here is bashing Catholics. It is some of the hierarchy of the church who are responsible. Read the article. Of just the intro if you are a one-grapher. The parishioners were kept in the dark. At least until major stories like the one in the Los Angeles Times began to appear.
As for these being homosexual pedophiles, there were a fair number of priests among the 30some in Los Angeles who were accused of molesting young girls. Pedophilia is not limited to those who molest boys. Read up on it.

Seven months we’ve been waiting for someone, anyone, to ask the White House staff what was President Obama doing on the night the Benghazi attacks took place. We have researched this on our own and have him tracked from 4pm to around 7:30pm (EST). But after 7:30pm it is a total BLACKOUT – an unknown void of information. Finally after seven MONTHS. Chris Wallace asks White House Communications Director, Dan Pfeiffer, what was President Obama doing. (Snip) they are hiding what actually took place that night. They are desperately trying to cover the President’s intentional uninvolvement.

Does the president believe that would be illegal? Pfeiffer: I can’t speak to the law here. The law is irrelevant. The activity was outrageous (Snip) Stephanopoulos: You don’t really mean the law is irrelevant, do you? Pfeiffer: What I mean is whether it’s legal or illegal is not important to the fact that the conduct doesn’t matter.

Treasury officials were made aware in June 2012 that the IRS inspector general was reviewing the office that handles tax-exempt applications, but a letter from October shows that the inspector general did not highlight the audit as a top concern for the agency. In a memo dated October 15, 2012, to then-Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner about IRS challenges for 2013, Inspector General J. Russell George noted other problem areas, but made no mention of the investigation taking place at the time of the agency´s intense scrutiny of conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

It eventually comes down to who — who at the IRS was responsible for targeting conservative and Tea Party groups for special scrutiny. Because, after all, you can’t put a “system” in jail. You can’t put a report in prison. You can’t indict a department for corruption. At the end of the day it’s people who are responsible for using the enormous powers of the Internal Revenue Service to go after other people and groups because of their political beliefs. U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) told the tale of one of his constituents who applied for tax-exempt status for her Tea Party group in July 2010.

She´s something of a foodie but has been able to eat only microwaveable foods, she adds. WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
