Southwest Airlines adds
new fee to board early

Los Angeles Times, by Hugo Martin

Original Article

Posted By:NorthernDog, 1/21/2013 3:22:28 PM

The add-on fee trend among the nation´s airlines continues as Southwest Airlines announced Monday a new $40 fee to let passengers board early. Southwest, the nation´s most popular domestic carrier, already charges $10 for its Early Bird Check-In service, which improves a passenger´s position in the boarding queue. But the new $40 fee guarantees that passengers get to be among the first 15 in line, letting them stow away carry-on bags in the overhead bin and pick seats with more legroom. The new boarding option can be purchased at the gate, up to 45 minutes before boarding

Comments:
The early bird option works well enough for me. I hope this doesn´t eventually supplant it.

I pay for very few fares myself. They are paid by my clients. I can´t see them paying forty bucks for me to jump on a little early. If it ain´t billable, I ain´t spending it.

I usually wear a helmet and shoulder pads before I board a flight. That way I don`t care when I get on because I can always knock people out of my way regardless......./s

If possible, check in with Southwest online as the clock hits 24 hours prior to your departure time. I´ve never gotten anything worse than a mid-level B boarding priority, always good seats still available by then.

I miss Herb Kelleher. Southwest used to be different, and I dug it. Now it´s nickel and dime, crappy frequent flier program, and they seem like every other airline.

I travel on business quite a bit. While I´ve never traveled on SWA, I know what they are doing here.

Many of the airlines got rocked after 9/11. Remember them begging for people to fly or else they would go bankrupt? Several had taken government bailouts. Then came all the fees.

As a result, travelers started to carry on all their bags and the fighting has ensued. People are getting very rude and aggressive with overhead space and the airlines are getting ugly about it too.

Now it looks like the airlines are trying to fix the situation (for some) by allowing you to agree to pay more to get on the plane earlier than the general masses. Earlier = first dibs on the overhead space.

I see this coming to a head soon. The airlines brought this on in the first place (fees for bags) and now are sitting back and pretending they are doing you a favor (early boarding) for yet another fee. So they collect money on the checked bags and in a round about way are collecting money on the carry ons (through early boarding) too.

The only thing left for them to do is charge a penalty to the unlucky schlubs who didn´t pay for early boarding and now don´t have overhead space for their carry ons. Once that happens, the airlines will be able to charge and increase the fees whenever they want.

It will get even more ugly...

If you are older or physically limited pay the fee although 40 dollars is 30 more than Allegiant or man up and join the scramble.

I take SWA Hou to Dallas often to see the grandbabies. This year I have had my flt canceled 3x and my husband had his canceled 1x. It doesn´t seem to matter what time of day. I always pay the $10 for front of line since I prefer an aisle seat. Unfortunately, when your flt is canceled you don´t carry over the privilege to the rescheduled flt and if you want your $10 back you have to call them and request it.

After 9/11, flying in general and overseas in particular is as about as enjoyable as a root canal.

The tone is set immediately with the intrusive TSA screenings. Furthermore, the rudeness of the TSA, flight staff, board people and flight attendants

The experience of flying is a combination of going to the post office the week of Christmas and April 15 coupled with standing in line at the federal building for your past port.

It used to be fun and filled with adventure and awe. Now, it is just horrendous.

For $40 more I expect a bigger seat greater then 17" width and enough legroom that I can stand straight up from the seat.

With the insulting low IQ´d TSA workers, all the add on fees, their lack of respect for handicap folks onboard the plane, I no longer fly any airline. Even with the gas prices it´s usually cheaper for me to drive to my destinations than to fly. Ok in some cases the gas may be a little more but it still beats the incompetence above.

Slavyansk Ukraine- A deadly gunfight in a town in restive east Ukraine on Sunday shattered a fragile Easter truce, with Russia declaring it was "outraged" at the return to violence in the crisis-hit former Soviet republic. Three pro-Russian militants and one attacker were killed in a firefight at a roadblock close to the separatist-held town of Slavyansk, said a local pro-Kremlin rebel leader, Vyatcheslav Ponomarev. Vladimir, a masked 20-year-old pro-Russian rebel who was at the barricade, told AFP: "Four cars pulled up to our roadblock around 1:00am (2200 GMT Saturday). Washington - The latest delay to a final decision on the Keystone XL oil pipeline will reinforce a White House strategy to energize President Barack Obama´s liberal-leaning base before fall elections in which Democrats risk losing control of the U.S. Senate. Environmentalists, worried about the project´s effect on climate change, have put enormous pressure on the president to reject the pipeline from Canada´s oil sands, staging demonstrations outside the White House and protests in states where he travels. A decision to approve it now could have prompted that vocal group, which was instrumental in electing Obama in 2008 and 2012,

Gospel story of Jesus’ resurrection a

“On the third day, he rose again.” That line, from the Nicene Creed, is a foundational statement of Christian belief. It declares that three days after Jesus died on the cross, he was resurrected, a glimmer of the eternal life promised to believers. It’s the heart of the Easter story in seven little words. But how that statement is interpreted is the source of some of the deepest rifts in Christianity — and a stumbling block for some Christians, and more than a few skeptics. Did Jesus literally come back from the dead in a bodily resurrection, as many traditionalist

´8THEIST´ license plate in NJ: Why
states can´t rein in the vanity plate monster

If you can get a New Jersey vanity license plate that reads “BAPTIST,” why not one that reads “8THEIST”? That’s the question Shannon Morgan, a self-describe atheist, is asking in a lawsuit after the New Jersey department of motor vehicles denied her vanity plate application. Her main complaint is a bureaucracy deeming that “8THEIST” has connotations that offend “good taste and decency,” the bar which the state uses to judge the suitability of personalized plate messages. She also wants the state to adopt a more “viewpoint-neutral” vanity plate approval policy, since when she typed “BAPTIST” into the DMV application it

When Chelsea Clinton announced Thursday that she’s pregnant, it took the media about two nanoseconds to home in on what that really means: Hillary, should she run for president in 2016, will campaign as a grandmother. (Snip) And for another, Hillary’s newfound role as grandmother isn’t necessarily a political boon. As I wrote in the Washington Monthly’s current issue, it could very easily cut both ways. After all, Hillary, who will be 68 in 2016, already runs the risk of appearing old, a vulnerability not lost on her detractors. From the Monthly: (At sixty-six, Hillary is “not particularly old for

Chef Vered Guttman braved the challenge of preparing a White House Passover seder in line with Michelle Obama´s healthy eating guidelines and lived to tell her story. "The traditional seder fare is hardly fresh or healthy," Guttman wrote in a post-dinner review about incorporating vegetable sides to "offset some of the Jewish carbs" like gefilte fish and matzo ball soup. And her hard work to keep it healthy paid off, as both the President and First Lady praised her quinoa-kale salad and even inquired after the recipe. Guttman, a D.C. based caterer, worked with White House executive chef Cris Comerford

A new poll shows former secretary of state Hillary Clinton´s (D) numbers hitting their lowest point in six years. Meanwhile, it finds that the Republican Party is experiencing something of a renaissance. The Fox News poll, from Democratic pollster Anderson Robbins Research and GOP pollster Shaw & Company, shows Clinton´s favorable rating dropping to 49 percent, compared to 45 percent unfavorable. The last time her numbers were in that ballpark was during the 2008 Democratic presidential primary race. After she ended her campaign, her favorable/unfavorable split was 47/46. Other polls have shown Clinton´s numbers --

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

That was quite a victory dance President Obama did Thursday while claiming Obamacare is “working” because eight million people have now supposedly signed up for the health care program. He even indulged in some less-than-subtle mockery of Republicans - and by extension the majority of Americans who have disapproved of Obamacare since before it became law. "The repeal debate is and should be over,” Obama said, taking a dig at Republicans who are “going through, you know, the stages of grief … anger and denial and all that stuff …” But a president who is viewed by most Americans as less

Monaco’s full, prepared text is available here. She presented the speech, entitled “Countering Violent Extremism and the Power of Community,” at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government on April 15. GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that a family of dissident ranchers and their supporters in his home state of Nevada are ´domestic terrorists,´ citing this week´s standoff with the federal government´s Bureau of Land Management. Cliven Bundy has refused to pay grazing fees for land where his hundreds of cattle roam every day. The land is owned by the federal government, which says he owes more than $1 million. Bundy, however, insists that since his family has been using the land since the 1870s, Uncle Sam can´t collect the grazing fees. A tense standoff developed this week after

Hi, everybody. For millions of Americans, this time of year holds great meaning. Earlier this week, we hosted a Passover Seder at the White House, and joined Jewish families around the world in their re-tellings of the story of the Exodus and the victory of faith over oppression. And this Sunday, Michelle, Malia, Sasha, and I will join our fellow Christians around the world in celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, the salvation he offered the world, and the hope that comes with the Easter season. If the Rev. John DeBonville could preach a sermon to lift the souls of churchgoers across America, his message would be simple: Stop dressing so tacky for church. DeBonville has heard about the “come as you are” approach to dressing down for Sunday service, but he says the Sabbath is getting too sloppy. When he scans the pews of churches, DeBonville sees rows of people dressed in their Sunday worst. They saunter into church in baggy shorts, flip-flop sandals, tennis shoes and grubby T-shirts. Some even slide into the pews carrying coffee in plastic foam containers as if they’re going to Starbucks. “It’s like
