Obama inauguration: the President
starts his second term with a
declaration of class war

It was like watching the woman you love marrying the wrong man. Obama’s second inaugural was far from the unifying speech that we were promised but instead a declaration of (continued) war on the conservative movement and a rallying cry for liberals. Does the President not realise that he won the 2012 election and doesn’t have to carry on campaigning? Or did someone load up an old draft of his convention speech in to the autocue by mistake?[Snip] You can see where all this is leading. It begins with an "s" and ends with "ism".

I don´t suppose our dear leader grasps the irony of his comments regarding the few thriving in the country our founders created and the very fact that our founders were the 1%´rs of their day. What are the chances he has a clue what happend to the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

This time he will be surrounded by his own Praetorian Guard known as Organizing for Action. He promised a Civilian Security Force as well funded as the military. Beck should put his city building on hold and find the source of their funding. If the funding is illegal we should shut them down while we still can.

He still has the white right wingers with guns to deal with, however. He can´t have people with guns that can be converted to full auto running around trying to take their country back.

It´s going to be a bumpy ride.

He can`t fix the mess created by republicans and capitalism in another 4 years. He`s counting on Moochelle to run in 2016 to continue the struggle.

The media is our constant pincushion but what does it say about our ´free´ press that this sort of headline - factual, unafraid - would never appear in any US publication regardless of ownership or political tilt?

And speaking of the Battle Hymn of the Republic. My ancestor sang that. Who volunteered for the Civil War though he was a poor man with six children. He wanted to end slavery. I do not need MSNBC´s advice on ending racism, and I don´t feel guilty. What I feel is a heritage of seeing problems before other people did and acting on those perceptions. Not being stuck on problems of one hundred sixty years ago when the issue today is not African-Americans, but babies being killed with scissors into the skull. Our president supports the scissors in the skull, and I am not so sorry for him as I am for them. Like my ancestor, who was finally killed in battle after several years of running his middle-aged body from one to another, I´ll do what I think is right and be unsurprised that many don´t like it much. He didn´t care. I don´t care. He died a holy death and I hope for nothing better.

Dear Leader just had to make it political. He couldn´t give the Community Organizer routine a rest for a day. When the real Abraham Lincon was elected in 1860, he spoke words of unity, he spoke words of common purpose, common struggle, common identity. He offered an olive branch to the half dozen states that had already left the Union. There was no chest thumping in that speech or threatening to impose his will over his adversaries. Someone should send Professor Chris Mathews a copy of that speech.

A pregnant journalist is recovering in hospital today after a pro-Kremlin political leader in Russia told two male aides to ´violently rape´ her at a press conference. Nationalist Vladimir Zhironovsky launched his extraordinary tirade after reporter Stella Dubovitskaya asked him an innocuous question about sanctions against Ukraine. The founder of the far right Liberal Democratic Party began shouting wildly, before suddenly manhandling two young male aides towards the pregnant mother-of-one. He then shouted to them: ´When I say, you run to her and violently rape her.´ The parliamentary reporter, who is six months pregnant, is now being treated in hospital

A huge fire in Gibraltar, caused by a fuel tank explosion, shut down many online betting services and disrupted gamblers during a busy day of sport. Residences near the blaze were evactuated following the fire, which broke out at around 1pm local time. The explosion occurred at Gibraltar´s main power station and the fire shut down much of the area´s electricity. Thousands of residents and tourists were left without power while firefighters battled the blaze. The fire was eventually brought under control at around 4.30pm local time. A Gibraltar Government spokesman said: "The fire is under control and there are no casualties

Immortalised in Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem about the “valley of death”, the Charge of the Light Brigade is remembered as one of the most glorious defeats in British history. The documents overturn much of the established wisdom of the battle and provide clues as to how the calamitous attack, during the Battle of Balaclava, in the Crimean War, came to be accidentally launched. [Snip] The charge saw the light cavalry mount an assault into a valley flanked, on three sides, by Russians. Lord Raglan, overall commander of the British forces, had intended to send the Light Brigade to pursue and

What stops the Earth from looking like Pluto is energy from the Sun. The quantity and type of energy coming from the Sun varies over cycles that range up to 1,500 years long. The cycle we can see with our own eyes, in our own lifetimes, is the sunspot cycle that is normally eleven years long. [Snip] It has become established—for those who are willing to look at the evidence—that climate will very closely follow our colder Sun. Climate is no longer a mystery to us. We can predict forward up to two solar cycles, that is about twenty-two years into the future. When models of solar activity are further refined, we may be able to predict climate

Of all the many absurdities of the great climate change non-crisis which has been pointlessly obsessing our planet this last three or four decades, surely the most egregious is this: global warming is good. No really, it is. As a few bold heretics--such as Australian geologist Ian Plimer in his book Heaven And Earth--have long been trying to tell anyone prepared to listen, the human species is designed for warmth not cold. Ice ages are something we should naturally fear; warming periods are something which for which we should yearn. All the historical evidence confirms this--that periods of warming

With her twinkling eyes and beaming smile, it is hard to believe Her Majesty will mark her 88th birthday tomorrow. This portrait of the Queen, taken by celebrated British photographer David Bailey CBE, was released today ahead of the occasion. It shows the monarch smiling at the camera - while donning a pearl necklace, earrings and a brooch. Her jewellery is accompanied by a simple dress by Angela Kelly, who has served as the Queen´s personal assistant and senior dresser since 2002. The black-and-white photograph was taken at Buckingham Palace in March and commissioned on behalf of the Government´s GREAT

At least six Birmingham schools accused of harbouring a Trojan horse plot run by Muslim fundamentalists will be placed under special measures by Ofsted. The action is understandable. The unsubtle attempts to insert Islamist ideas--representing an extremist, politicised form of Islam--into the curriculum of those schools makes for frightening reading. Equally unsettling was the liberal establishment’s failure to correct it. According to a special report by the Education Funding Agency, radical Muslims have tried to take control of teaching by first taking control of school governorships. Excellent head teachers were either reduced to the status of figureheads or forced out

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

That was quite a victory dance President Obama did Thursday while claiming Obamacare is “working” because eight million people have now supposedly signed up for the health care program. He even indulged in some less-than-subtle mockery of Republicans - and by extension the majority of Americans who have disapproved of Obamacare since before it became law. "The repeal debate is and should be over,” Obama said, taking a dig at Republicans who are “going through, you know, the stages of grief … anger and denial and all that stuff …” But a president who is viewed by most Americans as less

In a speech earlier this week, Lisa O. Monaco, President Barack Obama’s assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism, insisted that American parents must be vigilant because their “confrontational” children could be on the verge of becoming terrorists. Monaco’s full, prepared text is available here. She presented the speech, entitled “Countering Violent Extremism and the Power of Community,” at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government on April 15. Monaco began her remarks by eloquently describing the lives tragically lost last year during the Boston Marathon bombings. Interestingly, the Harvard grad failed to mention the religion or the motive of brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan

Moreover, all around him are astonishing opportunities for him to be an historic figure -- one who could and should be the man who did more than any other single person in turning back the red tide of Obama. If the Rev. John DeBonville could preach a sermon to lift the souls of churchgoers across America, his message would be simple: Stop dressing so tacky for church. DeBonville has heard about the “come as you are” approach to dressing down for Sunday service, but he says the Sabbath is getting too sloppy. When he scans the pews of churches, DeBonville sees rows of people dressed in their Sunday worst. They saunter into church in baggy shorts, flip-flop sandals, tennis shoes and grubby T-shirts. Some even slide into the pews carrying coffee in plastic foam containers as if they’re going to Starbucks. “It’s like

"No, absolutely not," the November midterm election is not a referendum on President Obama and his policies, Democrat Party Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) told NBC´s "Meet the Press" on Sunday. "[T]hese elections, particularly the Senate elections, are referendums on the candidates running," she said. Asked about vulnerable Democrats who have criticized President Obama´s flawed healthcare law, Wasserman Schultz said they are running their own race. President Obama asserts that 8 million people have signed up for Obamacare, as though that were something to be proud of. In fact, Obamacare has always been a fiasco from a fiscal perspective–a black hole of subsidies and expanded Medicaid, with largely fictitious mechanisms in place to pay for it. As the number of subsidized participants grows, the disaster gets worse. Charles Blahous explains: Our national discussion…is missing the truly significant story here; what is unfolding before our eyes is a colossal fiscal disaster, poised to haunt legislators and taxpayers for decades to come. It is quite possible that the ACA is
