The assault weapons ban of 1994 may have had something to do with republicans gaining control of the House, but much more important was Bill Clinton´s arrogance, coupled with the behavior of House democrats when the Clinton scandals began to emerge. The Democrats were shameless in diverting attention to the travel office fiasco, the death of Vince Foster, and Whitewater.
In addition, the members of the black caucus, jiving around near the well of the House on several close votes, left an enormous bad impression on those voters who watched C span at all.
Finally, it was the genuis of Newt Gingrich to nationalize the House races, with Contract for America, that put the icing on the cake.
It could happen again, but not with the timid, inarticulate republican leaders in the House and Senate. We need new leadership.

I find it amusing that on more than one occasion, Bill Clinton publicly warns Obama not to do something and actually sounds reasonable while doing it. Like Obama would ever take the advice.

The Framers of the Constitution did not envision the creation of a standing army. See Article I, Section 8. A fulltime Navy is provided for, but Congress can only appropriate funds for raising an army for no more than two years. Hence the need for a "well regulated militia".

What´s so hard for everybody, left and right, to understand about the original intent of Amendment 2? The populace was expected to be armed and trained in the use of arms in order to protect the Republic. Sort of like Switzerland, where every adult male is armed and a member of the militia.
