| ST. LOUIS Stan Musial, one of baseball´s greatest hitters and a Hall of Famer with the St. Louis Cardinals for more than two decades, died Saturday. He was 92. Stan the Man won seven National League batting titles, was a three-time MVP and helped the Cardinals capture three World Series championships in the 1940s. The Cardinals announced Musial´s death in a news release. They said he died Saturday evening at his home in Ladue surrounded by family. The team said Musial´s son-in-law, Dave Edmonds, informed the club of Musial´s death.

FTA: He led the NL in most every hitting category for at least one year, except homers. He hit a career-high 39 home runs in 1948, falling one short of winning the Triple Crown.
He was one homer short from a lot more than that. For in ´48, Musial led the NL in hits, runs, doubles, triples, RBIs, and was batting champion. He was one HR away from the all-time unparallelled season for a major league hitter.

IIRC, the Phillies Rich Ashburn finished just behind Musial three times for the NL batting title.

Forget all the records. The "man" handled his life with supreme dignity, and was universally admired for the purity of his character. We need more of this kind of role model in sports, and less of Tiger, Lance, Manti, and the rest.

I virtually grew up in Ebbets Field. Stan The Man used to kill my Bums - - just rip them to pieces. Yet all of us Dodger fans loved the guy. He was cheered to the rafters every time he came to the plate.
Stan always said that Ebbets Field was his favorite ballpark.
Now get this - - he was the best hitter - - by far - - that I ever saw. And that includes Mays, Aaron - - all of them.
RIP, Stan The Man - - with total love from all Brooklyn Dodger fans.

When I was a kid, the Cardinals had a lock on Midwest baseball with their extensive radio network, and Stan Musial was the face of the Cards. Thanks for the memories, Mr. Musial.

The husband of a friend named his only son ´´Stan´´ after Musial. I told my friend she should be glad he wasn´t a fan of Carl Yastrzemski.

I grew up listening to Harry Caray, Jack Buck and Joe Garagiola calling Stan Musial´s home runs.

Stan Musial was 1/2 polish, 1/2 slavish, I believe.
And he had the most peculiar batting stance, but it really worked. But most important---
He was a good and decent man.

He will be sorely missed here in St. Louis as well as throughout baseball land. As another poster noted, Earl Weaver also passed. Two greats may they RIP.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. Rory McIlroy abruptly walked off the course Friday at the Honda Classic, telling reporters who followed him to his car he´s "not in a good place mentally." He later said it was more dental than mental, releasing a statement that he couldn´t concentrate because of a sore wisdom tooth. The surprising departure raised serious questions about golf´s No. 1 player with the Masters just more than a month away. McIlroy has played only four rounds in three tournaments this year, and this was a clear sign of frustration.

WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

It began in earnest last Friday. A flash mob of latte drinking, tofu eating media that has done its best to quell, rather than fan the flames of truth, turned on one of their own. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
