Virginia lawmaker´s AK-47
sparks gun debate on House floor

Washington Examiner, by Steve Contorno

Original Article

Posted By:BaseballFan, 1/18/2013 1:16:48 PM

A Richmond-area lawmaker brandished an AK-47 on the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates on Thursday in a wild stunt aimed at rallying support for tougher gun laws. Del. Joe Morrissey, D-Highland Springs, pulled the weapon out shortly after the day´s session got underway, a time when legislators typically welcome school groups and other visitors in the chamber´s gallery. (Snip) Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, interrupted Morrissey´s speech to ask him to take his finger off the trigger lock and later said that taking guns from citizens is what led to the Holocaust and mass killings under the Soviet Gulag.

FTA: "Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, interrupted Morrissey´s speech to ask him to take his finger off the trigger lock..."

This is instructive on so many levels...

If a liberal recklessly brandishes a gun he´s a hero trying to save the children. If a conservative praises the 2nd Amendment, and the right to confidentially and responsibly own weapons, he´s a child-murderer. Go figure.

That was not an AK-47...that was a politician-grade, fully automatic, GrandStand Propmaster 5000 with a self-beclowning attachment, capable of firing over 100 rounds of BS per minute.

Not a weapon to be trifled with and certainly not to be handled by the idiot in question given his obvious lack of safety training.

Joe Morrissey (D), strikes me as a nut job who should not be allowed anywhere near a gun.

He should try out his claim that you can "walk in front of a school" with that thing. Federal felony within a thousand feet of a "gun-free school zone".

Obviously not a regular handler of firearms, or well informed.
AK´s aren´t legal here without modification or special registration.
What a moron.

They are legal here with no registration or restrictions (other than the federal ones). Personally I wouldn´t have a thumbhole stock model, but to each his own.
I also do not touch the trigger of any gun unless I am about to fire or make it rack safe, and I dont make it rack safe with a magazine in it. What was he going to shoot at?
I suspect most gun owners have a similar rule. This guy knows nothing about guns.

I thought Federal buildings were ´gun free zones´, at least that´s what my concealed carry class taught me! I´ll bet these ´brave´ legislators have armed guards in the building with them!

According to the article, what he did was legal: "Members of the General Assembly, law enforcement personnel or anyone with a concealed weapon permit is allowed to bring a gun into the Capitol."

I think that´s a very good law, and that tomorrow about 20 people on the other side of the debate ought to openly pack on the floor. Then do it so continuously and for so long with no accidents that they get over this foolishness of thinking that a gun is dangerous but a person isn´t.

Trying to imagine what a stunt like that would´ve produced in the Texas Legislature. A stern whuppin´ would have been administered on the spot if he had survived the onslaught of the legislators with CHLs. Brandish a gun in an arena like that? Inexcusable. Jail time and impeachment are required. Will it happen? Nope.

In response to Russia´s recent actions in Ukraine, the U.S. military will send about 600 soldiers to several nations on the Baltic Sea for training and exercises over the next week. The first company of soldiers (members of the 173rd Airborne Brigade) will arrive in Poland on Wednesday, officials said. Three additional company-size units will deploy to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania for similar infantry training and exercises. They will be in place in all four countries over the next week. Pentagon spokesperson Rear Admiral John Kirby said the bilateral exercises were a result of Russia´s actions in Ukraine. Kirby added

Russia hit back at tough talk by Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday, saying it could cope if the White House imposed further sanctions over its actions in Ukraine. "We shan´t give up on cooperation with foreign companies, including from Western countries, but we will be ready for unfriendly steps," Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told the Russian parliament. "I am sure we can minimize their impact," he said, according to a translation by the Reuters news agency. "We will not allow our citizens to become hostages of political games." Medvedev said that some Russian banks had been affected in

Washington - Secretary of State John Kerry attested Tuesday to the massively complex challenges Washington faces in Ukraine, Russia, Iran and the Middle East, declaring "it was easier" during the Cold War. In a candid moment during a State Department speech, the top US diplomat said changing global power dynamics made a quaint memory of the early East-West stalemate, when American children would "crouch under our desks at school and practice" safety steps for a possible nuclear attack. "During the Cold War... it was easier than it is today -- simpler is maybe a way to put it," Kerry

Vice President Joe Biden has been speaking in Ukraine on the second day of a trip where he is showing support to the nation´s fledgling pro-Western government. In an address in Kiev on Tuesday, Biden repeated a U.S. call for Russia to pull back its military from Ukraine´s borders. (Snip) But Biden said that while the U.S. was prepared to support Ukraine in its attempts to secure a unified country, he urged Ukrainians to "fight the cancer of corruption that is endemic in your system right now."

Spring´s thaw is reviving the economy, too. A recent batch of government and business reports show a U.S. economy emerging from winter´s deep freeze. Economists had expected the growth to accelerate in 2014 after two years of slow and steady improvement. But an unusually bitter winter sent factories, hiring and consumer spending into hibernation. Now, as temperatures rise, the economy is regaining momentum. (Snip) Shopping has also recovered along with temperatures. Total U.S. retail sales rose last month by 1.1 percent, led by purchases of autos and furniture. Consumers account for about 70 percent of all economic activity, making them

Anger is brewing among service members and veterans groups after the publication of a New York Times op-ed that tries to link veterans and white supremacists. The piece came just days after a 73-year-old white supremacist and veteran, Frazier Glenn Miller, was arrested in an attack that killed three people at a Jewish center in Overland Park, Kansas. In the column, op-ed contributor Kathleen Belew writes: In 2009, the Department of Homeland Security issued a nine-page report detailing the threat of domestic terrorism by the white power movement. This short document outlined no specific threats, but rather a set of

Maryland health officials are investigating possible cases of food poisoning at what may be the worst-ever venue — a gathering of government and industry leaders attending a national Food Safety Summit. At least four people called the Baltimore City Health Department this week to report that they developed diarrhea, nausea and other symptoms about 12 hours after eating a meal April 9 during the conference at the Baltimore Convention Center. That was midway through the annual meeting held April 8 to 10 that attracted more than 1,500 food safety professionals, including staff from federal agencies as well as businesses such

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

Former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) said a number of junior GOP senators considering a presidential run in 2016 do not yet have the experience — specifically naming Rand Paul (Ky.), Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas). The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. I don´t think they´ve got enough experience yet," Dole said. The 90-year-old former senator said, however, his main concern about 2016 is living

The Citizens Commission on Benghazi, a self-selected group of former top military officers, CIA insiders and think-tankers, declared Tuesday in Washington that a seven-month review of the deadly 2012 terrorist attack has determined that it could have been prevented – if the U.S. hadn´t been helping to arm al-Qaeda militias throughout Libya a year earlier. ´The United States switched sides in the war on terror with what we did in Libya, knowingly facilitating the provision of weapons to known al-Qaeda militias and figures,´ Clare Lopez, a member of the commission and a former CIA officer, told MailOnline. If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

Public Trust: Sixty-one percent polled say President Obama lies "some of the time" or "most of the time" on matters of national importance. Americans have to ask: Why do we let him get away with it? It´s no surprise that a Fox News poll of 1,012 registered voters last week found immense distrust of a president whose main domestic initiative was based on a lie. The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. Asked, "How often do you think Barack Obama lies to the country on important matters?" 37% replied "most of

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
