Virginia lawmaker´s AK-47
sparks gun debate on House floor

Washington Examiner, by Steve Contorno

A Richmond-area lawmaker brandished an AK-47 on the floor of the Virginia House of Delegates on Thursday in a wild stunt aimed at rallying support for tougher gun laws. Del. Joe Morrissey, D-Highland Springs, pulled the weapon out shortly after the day´s session got underway, a time when legislators typically welcome school groups and other visitors in the chamber´s gallery. (Snip) Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, interrupted Morrissey´s speech to ask him to take his finger off the trigger lock and later said that taking guns from citizens is what led to the Holocaust and mass killings under the Soviet Gulag.

Another useful idiot at play. /s off/

FTA: "Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, interrupted Morrissey´s speech to ask him to take his finger off the trigger lock..."

This is instructive on so many levels...

If a liberal recklessly brandishes a gun he´s a hero trying to save the children. If a conservative praises the 2nd Amendment, and the right to confidentially and responsibly own weapons, he´s a child-murderer. Go figure.

That was not an AK-47...that was a politician-grade, fully automatic, GrandStand Propmaster 5000 with a self-beclowning attachment, capable of firing over 100 rounds of BS per minute.

Not a weapon to be trifled with and certainly not to be handled by the idiot in question given his obvious lack of safety training.

Joe Morrissey (D), strikes me as a nut job who should not be allowed anywhere near a gun.

He should try out his claim that you can "walk in front of a school" with that thing. Federal felony within a thousand feet of a "gun-free school zone".

#5: Not for him. I´m sure he´s covered by the super secret David Gregory clause.

Obviously not a regular handler of firearms, or well informed.
AK´s aren´t legal here without modification or special registration.
What a moron.

They are legal here with no registration or restrictions (other than the federal ones). Personally I wouldn´t have a thumbhole stock model, but to each his own.
I also do not touch the trigger of any gun unless I am about to fire or make it rack safe, and I dont make it rack safe with a magazine in it. What was he going to shoot at?
I suspect most gun owners have a similar rule. This guy knows nothing about guns.

I thought Federal buildings were ´gun free zones´, at least that´s what my concealed carry class taught me! I´ll bet these ´brave´ legislators have armed guards in the building with them!

Reply 10 - Posted by: WI Cynic, 1/18/2013 2:28:41 PM     (No. 9124834)

According to the article, what he did was legal: "Members of the General Assembly, law enforcement personnel or anyone with a concealed weapon permit is allowed to bring a gun into the Capitol."

I think that´s a very good law, and that tomorrow about 20 people on the other side of the debate ought to openly pack on the floor. Then do it so continuously and for so long with no accidents that they get over this foolishness of thinking that a gun is dangerous but a person isn´t.

Trying to imagine what a stunt like that would´ve produced in the Texas Legislature. A stern whuppin´ would have been administered on the spot if he had survived the onslaught of the legislators with CHLs. Brandish a gun in an arena like that? Inexcusable. Jail time and impeachment are required. Will it happen? Nope.

DENVER - A group of Colorado sheriffs unhappy with recent gun control laws are planning to file a lawsuit to block them. The sheriffs have called a Friday morning news conference to detail their federal challenge. The lawmen said they would challenge two new laws, one limiting the size of ammunition magazines and another law to expand gun background checks. The laws were passed earlier this year in response to mass shootings in Aurora and at a school in Connecticut. Not all sheriffs opposed the bills, but some were frequent visitors to the state Capitol in an effort to prevent the gun controls.

Washington - Boston Mayor Tom Menino says information he has indicates that the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing acted alone. Menino tells ABC's "This Week" that he agreed with the decision to lock down Boston all day Friday, based on information officials had at the time. He tells ABC's "This Week" that a pipe bomb was found at another location and that another person was taken into custody. The mayor did not elaborate. One suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-KHAR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv), is in the hospital in serious condition. His older brother, Tamerlan, died in a police shootout

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and his gun control allies say Senate rejection of expanded background checks and other restrictions won´t stop their drive to reduce firearms violence. But their path to enacting gun curbs this year seems blocked by the National Rifle Association, and supporters of restrictions appear befuddled about what it will take to push legislation through this Congress. The Senate planned to vote Thursday on two more amendments to a gun control bill. One by Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., would cut aid to state and local governments that release information on gun owners.

William Strickland waited for his grandfather to step out of his South Side home to take his paratransit ride to a kidney dialysis appointment early March 2, authorities said Saturday — then stood behind the 72-year-old man, shot him six times in the back and stole his wallet, leaving him to die just steps from his home. Prosecutors said Saturday that Strickland, 19, used the money he took from his grandfather, who also was named William Strickland, to pay for new gym shoes, a cellphone and tattoos. The teen had no criminal history but was an admitted gang member, they said.

Federal court: No Second Amendment

The Second Amendment´s guarantee of a right to bear arms does not extend to the right to carry a concealed weapon in public, a federal appeals court in Denver has ruled. "We conclude that the carrying of concealed firearms is not protected by the Second Amendment . . ." Justice Carlos Lucero wrote on behalf of a three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Lucero cited case law dating to the 1800s that put restrictions on walking around in public with a gun. "In light of our nation's extensive practice of restricting citizens' freedom to carry firearms in a concealed manner,

Washington - The National Rifle Association is using a Justice Department memo it obtained to argue in ads that the Obama administration believes its gun control plans won´t work unless the government seizes firearms and requires national gun registration — ideas the White House has not proposed and does not support. (Snip) Justice Department and White House officials declined to provide much information about the memo or answer questions about it on the record. The memo has the look of a preliminary document and calls itself "a cursory summary" and assessment of gun curb

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

There’s really no reason for the press to suggest that the recent slew of scandals involving the Obama administration — Benghazi, the AP phone-record seizure, the snooping in James Rosen’s e-mail, the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups, and so on — are a confusing jumble. There is a very clear thread running through all of the administration’s actions: The U.S. deputy chief of mission in Libya, Gregory Hicks, says that he was told not to speak to a member of Congress about Benghazi without a State Department lawyer present, that he received a phone call from Hillary Clinton’s
