Jonah Goldberg explains what’s
wrong with conservatism

Daily Caller, by Matt K. Lewis

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 1/18/2013 9:41:18 AM

The morning after the presidential election, I quoted Eric Hoffer’s line that, “Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” And then I wrote this: “It’s time for conservative talking heads — many of whom misled their readers and audiences these last few weeks — to think more about the future of conservatism than about their personal popularity.” (Even before the election, I had been worried about this trend — as evidenced by another column, “A GOP running on empty.”)

FTA: real political success that can come only with persuading the unconverted.

Absolutely spot on!

Further, the messages and tools used to deliver them to Conservatives don´t work for the unconverted. Conservatives speak Latin and the unconverted only understand Mandarin.

Conservatives need to be evangelists of Conservatism and to do that you often have to meet people where they are, no matter how far from that place you normally live. You don´t evangelize in your own church! Those folks should already get it.

#1, Alicia Colon has made the point that in her Puerto Rican neighborhood, the GOP never showed up to meet with, mix among or talk to the Hispanics during the 2012 campaign. Multiply that neighborhood by thousands.

Sure, but he answers his own question - - it becomes a racket (and I think it has) because of the very egos of those who claim to be conservatism´s champions. They seem to be a dime a dozen these days, and they´re all just so much talk.

This is so irritating. Does Jonah Goldberg hold the record for converting leftists to the conservative cause? Does Jonah Goldberg know some secret for converting Democrats in to republicans? No? Did not think so. I think the saddest and most pathetic part of all of this is that people are actually stupid enough to think that four more years of whining and complaining about Conservatives is going to help. Thanks for giving the media another club to beat up conservatives Jonah, I for one, really appreciate it. Let me know when Jonah sets the record for converting believers. What a complete CROCK. BTW, Mr. Lewis, Jonah did mention a Huckster by name, a RINO sellout named Mike Huckabee.

The Left and Moderates always yell "it is the Conservatives fault". Until the GOP stops moving Left and comes back to the Right, this Conservative will continue to fight both the Left and the Moderate GOP.

Anyone who believes that the 47-50-something percent of Americans that now want government to take care of them from cradle to grave, can be persuaded, or converted are living in dream world. With today’s media and cultural brainwashing of the ignorant masses, you may as well try persuading a cat to be a frog. It’s the height of naiveté.
If we want to restore and preserve any part of what the country used to be, it will be by secession/revolution and a long hard struggle for re-independence.

I think that Jonah´s talks at colleges were the most effective that I have ever seen from others. His combination of humor and ability to talk to younger people was great. Bet he has touched more confused students than you know.

First, Lewis (and Goldberg) mistakenly treat the conservative media industry and the putative conservative party and it´s members -- Republican politicians -- as one and the same.

I disagree with the author in that I believe the conservative "comentariat" do yeoman´s work to change minds, including addressing Leftist argument with specificity.

What I don´t see is a political party doing the same in the political sphere. The Republican Party has been catatonic for the last 18 months.

We´re not lacking movement leaders, we´re lacking political leaders. It may well be that the Progressives have created overwhelming disincentives to public service for conservatives.

In short, the problem isn´t that conservatives aren´t communicating their message effectively and attempting to persuade Joe Public. The problem is that no politician is doing that.

Republicans will never be able to out-pander the Democrats, and as long as "reaching out" has to involve a wad of other peoples´ money in your hand to distribute, as it does today, forget it.

Until Jonah figures out that Conservatives and the Republican party are two entirely different animals, he needs to be quiet and stop handing clubs to dems. The NRO is a mostly moderate website who loved McCain and Romney. They are not Conservative.

There is far more hate on the Democrat side than anything I have seen from conservatives. People are not going to give up their values just to win elections. There is no upside to that scenario. Conservatives are asked to compromise just so the Republican bigwigs don´t have to be embarrassed by us. Sorry, don´t care. As far as those who make a living writing and speaking as conservatives, those who are throwing stones need to make sure they haven´t also made a living from writing and speaking about their opinions.

Today is Earth Day. Fox News’ The Five opened its show with a nearly 15 minute segment titled “Earth Day Hysteria.” The goal appeared to be to prove that scientists’ warnings about climate change are overblown and should be ignored if not outright mocked and co-host Eric Bolling was the ringleader of the effort. But he found an adversary in Bob Beckel, who challenged the status quo by presenting actual data on the rise of CO2 levels from NASA, of all places. But before Beckel got to his chart, Bolling took some time to “praise” President Barack Obama for what

The Republican National Committee has released a brutal memo on Senate majority leader Harry Reid, savaging him for repeatedly lying. The memo, under the name of press secretary Kirsten Kukowski, is titled "Nothing’s Too Unethical for Harry Reid." "Harry Reid is having a bad month," the memo begins. "He was caught funneling campaign money to his relatives. His Senate Majority PAC was caught lying to voters. And he was caught hypocritically accepting money tied to people he calls ´un-American.´ As he desperately clings to power, is there anything Harry Reid won’t do to promote his own self interests?"

The top Republicans in the Illinois Legislature are pushing back against Democrats´ plan to offer $100 million in taxpayer money to lure President Obama´s presidential library to Chicago, arguing the cash-strapped state can´t afford the investment. Minority Leader Jim Durkin said in a prepared statement released Monday that the state cannot afford the proposal when Illinois owes $7 billion in overdue bills and has a $100 billion deficit in its employee pension programs. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) announced stiff sanctions today against the team doctor, the team coach and the team trainer for cyclist Lance Armstrong, saying that they were all involved in a “conspiracy to commit widespread doping” over many years and with many riders. It imposed a 10-year ban on Johan Bruyneel, the team director, and eight-year bans for the doctor, Pedro Celaya, and the trainer, Jose “Pepe” Martí, as the result of their roles in

"What the climate justice movement is demanding is the ultimate abolition of fossil fuels," writes MSNBC´s Chris Hayes in a lengthy new call for action against global warming. To drive home the point, Hayes´ piece, published in The Nation, is titled "The New Abolitionism," and its message is that a way must be found to "convince or coerce" the world´s energy companies and energy-producing nations to give up the multi-trillion dollar business of powering the planet. LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Steve Huber, an affable salesman who is still paying off an unexpected medical bill, was not among the millions of Americans who signed up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act during the enrollment period that ended March 31. After seeing television ads for Kentucky’s new online insurance marketplace, Mr. Huber, 57, made several attempts to explore the website but found it too complicated. Moreover, his income has dropped in recent years, he said, and he felt certain that he could not afford coverage. So he never priced plans or researched whether he qualified for financial assistance. “I

The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

Former Sen. The former 1996 GOP presidential candidate sounded particularly skeptical of Cruz in an interview this week with The Wichita Eagle. "A number of the younger members, first-termers like Rand Paul, Rubio and that extreme-right-wing guy, Ted Cruz — all running for president now. If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning
