| Manti Te’o was the hero of the college football season, overcoming the loss of both his grandmother and his girlfriend on the same day to lead his team to victory over Michigan State. But then Deadspin broke the news that Lennay Kekua was nothing but an online figment, compiled from stolen Facebook pictures, possibly by Te’o’s friend Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. Te’o says he was the victim of a hoax, but others are skeptical that he could have been suckered for so long.Below, three theories on how the Catfish-meets-Lifetime scandal might have come about.

Comments: My opinion is that he made the whole thing up and I´m certainly gratified that it didn´t win him the Heisman.

Young gay men who are embarrassed and afraid of being discovered will do anything to keep it in the closet. Being heartbroken about a love lost would have been good cover for not being seen with a woman in public. Gonna have to come up with a new plan.

In 2006, Te´o played for Punahou School, a private co-ed institution in Manoa, Honolulu, where he had also attended middle school.

What stratum of society is interested in this story? The Kardashian stratum? The Lance Armstrong stratum? Maybe the Low Information stratum?
The more face-time such people get, the more coarse and corrupt our society becomes. I find this so distastful and vapid, I cannot fathom who cares other than those who are directly involved.

No matter which theory is correct, where he made his big mistake was the interview on Dec. 8th with ESPN where he was still talking about the awful loss of his girlfriend to leukemia in September. It is a fact that he and Notre Dame knew it was all a hoax on De. 6th, 2 days before the interview. Even if theory #1 is true and he genuinely had been tricked all along, he knew at the time of the interview it was a hoax but continued to talk about his ´girlfriend´s death´. And ESPN didn´t even ask him a question about it; he brought up the subject himself, so he was promoting a sympathy vote for the Heisman at that point.

Sure -there are more important things to cover, but that doesnt mean they will, just because of this story. I dont believe him, and think it was all to get attention and to win sympathy vote for the Heisman. He lied about too many things. If she didnt exist and then didnt die, who did he send the flowers to? Wouldnt you know at that point there was no funeral? But the biggest clue is what #16 said. He KNEW it was a hoax and still was promoting it. And his parents are in on it too.. sounds to me like all were in on it. The man is delusional, and to cover for him and promote him as a victim is what makes this a story that needs exposed.

You people are missing the two main points about this story. First, no reporter bothered to do the most minimal factchecking, which could have been to look for an obituary, or try to talk to her parents about Te´o. The newspapers could have assigned some of the same sports reporters who went to Alaska in 2008 to investigate Sarah Palin´s H.S. basketball skills. But nothing was done except to interview Te´o´s parents, who had a vested interest in pimping out their son for the Heisman. (See Cam Newton´s daddy, for example) Te´o was a family money tree. But the biggest perp in my opinion is Notre Dame. Notre Dame is a public relations machine, and pimping out Te´o´s candidacy for the Heisman served the interests of ND. So I suspect they knew about the truth, and chose to amplify the lie. Jack Swarbrick is the AD at Notre Dame, and he held a press conference on Wednesday, and it was the most fake, insincere appearance I have ever seen. He even tried to come up with some tears, and almost was successful. He talked about how the investigation of Te´o showed that Te´o was the victim, but will not release the investigation report. Swarbrick was disgusting in his little show, in my opinion. So what do we have? A psychologically disturbed, maybe sociopathic lad, parents who were looking for financial security, and a Catholic college that has no particular moral scruples. They did, after all, give an honorary doctorate to the abortionist in chief. And they almost pulled off the impossible, by pimping out a defensive player for the Heisman. So shame on the news business, shame on the lad, shame on his parents, and SHAME on Notre Dame, the Catholic college that stands for nothing.

One interesting aspect of the story is how poorly the sports media performed. Not only did they not fact check the story they promoted, but I think they were in on the cover up. The announcers downplayed the girlfriend story at the National Championship game, if they mentioned it at all. Someone on Fox this morning called it the Football-Industrial Complex.

#28, you have made the comparison with Palin´s experience on at least two threads. The difference, of course, is that Palin was a national vice-presidential candidate. This guy is a college football player. Not many newspapers would have spent the money to see if he really had a girlfriend.

No. 28 gets it - who has an interest in making the guy pathetic & getting the public to feel sorry for him (and hand him an award)? Think back on how BO was pimped & promoted by Harvard. What is Affirmative Action except "feeling sorry" for a certain class of people & their lack of progress? The fantasy back story on Clinton´s "deprived" childhood when he was running for pres. (there is a picture of him, in his mother´s biography, fixing a soda at his own HOME soda fountain)! Think of Oprah & her gullible audience & how they love feeling virtuous & superior because they "feel sorry" for her pathetic, confessing guests. All of it is related - to play on the public´s emotions...and get the desired response - give something: a trophy, an award, a restored public image and even an undeserved political office to people who cannot achieve honestly.

Too bad this and the misbehaving of Johnny Football wasn´t given a full vetting before the Heisman was awarded. Colin Klein would have won hands down. He had one bad game and dropped off the chart. Part if the Heisman award consideration is supposed to be CHARACTER and Colin Klein has the best character of the three hands down.

Yes, #28 covered all the major points. I did hear one reporter yesterday say that the way one particular teammate acted when asked about T´s "girlfriend," he was suspicious. He was almost telling him with his demeanor, "it´s not real, you guys." The reporter said it bugged him so he called T, said can I contact the girl´s parents, to get obit info, interview, etc.? T said no, they want their privacy. So, my point is, at least one reporter did make an effort.

Man does not live by politics alone . Because some of us are interested in this scam, does not make us less interested in Obama´s scams. For months, the story of Manti Te´o and the death of his beloved girlfriend was touted by the sports media and Notre Dame as " the " motivating factor in their run to the national championship. It became a mix of Win One for the Gipper and Brian´s Song. The students rallied around Te´o by wearing leis to games to honor his grief and his dead girlfriend. The sympathy story aided his quest for the Heisman Trophy. It was a major and ongoing story in the world of college sports and highlights how the media , whether sports or otherwise , has become lazy and gullible . That´s why I call the media - the MTM ( Manti Te´o Media ) now. Because they have fashioned an imaginary president. Notre Dame embarrassed themselves with that ridiculous press conference the other day. The AD said Te´o only became aware on Dec 6 and yet , Te´o gave interviews on Dec 8 and 11 where he still referred to his dead girlfriend. He may not have been in on the hoax in the beginning, but, he obviously became a willing participant at some point.

One more point: Te´o´s Mormonism was also played up vis-a-vis a Catholic university.
Aren´t Mormons viewed as more truthful due to the dictates of their faith? Why has the LDS angle disappeared?

WASHINGTON, - The Obama administration opened the door to a new era of U.S. energy exports on Friday, approving the first liquefied natural gas project since the start of a heated debate over how best to benefit from the shale energy boom. The Energy Department´s approval of unrestricted natural gas exports from Freeport LNG´s Quintana Island, Texas, terminal ends nearly a two-year pause in its review of export applications as the administration addressed concerns that sending unlimited amounts of domestic gas abroad could harm U.S. manufacturers. While the approval had been widely expected after growing signals

Although skillful and clever throughout, Dan Brown’s Inferno is finally more of a gateway argument on behalf of population control than a simple thriller about Dante, Florence, or bioterror. Considered as a whole, the novel serves as something like a “gateway to the Posthuman age,” as the seeming villain of the novel says when describing the goal of his plot. While the gateways in Dante lead either to Hell and self-knowledge or to Mount Purgatorio and a climb to the stars, this novel leads the reader into a brave new world of genetic engineering and suggests

Do Americans have a right to expect that firefighters responding to calls from their neighborhoods will always be the best-trained, most capable individuals available? Not if the U.S. Department of Justice has its way. That´s the disturbing message from a discrimination suit DOJ filed against the New York City Fire Department alleging that it discriminated against black and Hispanic applicants. Oddly enough, the case was not based on any particular act of discrimination. It was based purely on the fact that somebody somewhere decided that too many NYFD applicants had failed a job exam. The DOJ argued that these multiple failures

It linked the Mr Fogle´s capture, which threatens to further stress ties between Washington and Moscow, to a trip that a US delegation made to Dagestan in April in coordination with the Russian authorities to investigate the blasts. In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

‘What would you be focusing on in the Benghazi investigation?” I spent many years in the investigation biz, so it’s only natural that I’ve been asked that question a lot lately. I had the good fortune to be trained in Rudy Giuliani’s U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan. Rudy famously made his mark by making law enforcement reflect what common sense knew: Enterprises take their cues from the top. Criminal enterprises are no different: The capos do not carry out the policy of the button-men — it’s the other way around. So if I were investigating Benghazi,

East Germany’s Ministry for State Security, also known as the Stasi, posed a major challenge during my three-year stint as an attache at the U.S. Embassy in Bonn during the 1960s. Detecting and preventing Stasi agents from penetrating the security of U.S. diplomatic facilities in West Germany was a 24-7 undertaking. The East German secret police were even more ruthless and relentless in operations against their own citizens. Political suppression in that communist state was total. There was no room for dissent. Thousands of East Germans were arbitrarily imprisoned for “internal security” reasons.

Obama administration officials who were in key positions on Sept. 11, 2012, acknowledge that a range of mistakes were made the night of the attacks on the U.S. missions in Benghazi, and in messaging to Congress and the public in the aftermath. The officials spoke to CBS News in a series of interviews and communications under the condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments. They do not all agree on the list of mistakes and it's important to note that they universally claim that any errors or missteps did not cost lives and reflect "incompetence rather than malice or cover up.

Watching President Obama trying to dodge raindrops and responsibility yesterday reminded me of the moment when Dorothy pulls back the curtain and discovers that the Wizard of Oz is “just a man.” Stripped of his spell of mystery and power, the wizard is worse than mortal. He’s a fake. So it was with Obama in the Rose Garden. His performance was tired and trite, ordinary to the point of dull. His veneer of passion was so transparent that you could see him trying to summon his old-time magic by pushing the buttons

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.

The State Department, under Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, created an arrangement for her longtime aide and confidante Huma Abedin to work for private clients as a consultant while serving as a top adviser in the department. Ms. Abedin did not disclose the arrangement — or how much income she earned — on her financial report. It requires officials to make public any significant sources of income. An adviser to Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines, said that Ms. Abedin was not obligated to do so. The disclosure of the agreement that Ms. Abedin made with the State Department comes as her husband,

The Internal Revenue Service´s watchdog told top Treasury officials around June 2012 he was investigating allegations the tax agency had targeted conservative groups, for the first time indicating that Obama administration officials were aware of the explosive matter in the midst of the president´s re-election campaign. The disclosure to the Treasury general counsel and the deputy secretary was a cursory one, according to J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration. He said he didn´t reveal conclusions of the probe, which was in its early stages, and his disclosure came as part

The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.
