| Shellfish such as crabs, lobsters and shrimp feel pain, suggests a new study that calls into question how food and aquaculture industries treat these animals. Researchers have suspected for some time that live lobsters dunked into boiling water and rubber-banded crustaceans stored in crowded fish market tanks experience tremendous pain. Discovery News reported on that some years back. But it’s always a challenge for scientists to prove conclusively that a non-human is feeling pain. “On a philosophical point, it is impossible to demonstrate absolutely that an animal experiences pain,” researcher

Comments: Here´s one more thing for Mayor Bloomberg to go after, the unethical dunking of lobsters in hot water, or is that the butter to eat them? Chef Gordon Ramsey will not be amused.
I made a recording off PBS awhile back where they showed that you could "kill" and flash cook a lobster in five minutes or so. It was fun [grisly] to hear chef explain moving parts removed from heat was "normal."

I never cared for the practice of boiling the poor things alive. Of course they feel pain. Every living thing that has nerves feel pain. But I highly doubt that being in a crowded fish tank causes "tremendous" pain as they said. Boiling, however, is another matter.
The thing is...some animals eat other animals alive. Often it is those creatures that live under water who engage in that behavior the most. So, what is worse, getting boiled to death or being eating one bite at a time to death?

This little Cajun lady feels their pain. I feel the pain of those poor boiled blue crabs, those poor boiled Gulf shrimp, and those poor boiled wild caught or farm raised crawfish. So in the future, I will take an aspirin before boiling said crustaceans, so I don´t feel their pain. Seriously, are we not to get any flesh? All creatures that appear on the dinner table have nerves, and, therefore, may feel pain when being prepared for food. I like veggies, but, don´t take away my crawfish or you will be the next one who feels pain.

I stopped eating meat about 20 years ago---anything with a cute face. Luckily fish and seafood don´t have cute faces so I still eat that.
I do though wish no animal felt pain.
The Bible tells me God put animals on earth for us to eat. My brother tells me that if God didn´t want us to eat steak he wouldn´t have made it taste so good. I figure God must know what he is doing. But I still wish it didn´t hurt the animals.
I´ll bet PETA gets all whacked out about this study but can´t find any reason to care about the slaughter of babies in the womb and how much pain they feel.

As BillyBoob Klintoon said to his crabs... "I feel... your pain... OMG!"
The proper solution for fresh lobsters in NYC is as follows...
Soak them first in 32 ounces of soda, preferably Dr. Pepper. This will kill them in short order, but it´s kind of a sweet way to go.
And then the Dr. Pepper makes them taste so much better. And once they´re dead, lots of butter won´t hurt them at all. Tastes good. MMMMmmmm...
Tweet photos of your dinner to Mayor Bloomberg... as a keepsake.

So do 20-week-old human fetuses, according to research in Great Britain, where abortion is legal but not politicized the way it is here.
Anyway, no one talks about that here in the US, lest it "upset women" or drive business away from Planned Parenthood. Doctors here know which side their bread´s buttered on.
No one has that much invested in shellfish (well, maybe PETA), though, so it´s a safe topic for American researchers.

The best and most humane way to deal with a lobster prior to cooking is to sever its spinal cord with a knife. Instant death, no pain. Any reputable seafood cookbook shows how to do it.
I love animals as much as the next person but I also know that humans are natural carnivores and predators. That´s why we have eyes on the front of our heads - for hunting. Natural vegetarians have eyes on the sides of their heads - to avoid the hunters.

You libs are pathetic.
Instead of putting the lobster in boiling water, I will split their tail and put them in my 500 degree broiler. There, problem solved.

I always tell the poor little things that if they feel too uncomfortable just let me know and I´ll stop. Never had one ask me to stop. You start down this road and your diet may be limited to roots and nuts. I understand there are studies indicating plants also feel pain. #6 - I´m kinda with you. I´m an animal lover - but I still am a carnivore. I want the entire life chain of an animal to be pain free - even if it is ended prematurely and ends up on my plate. Never could understand why anyone would want anything to be in needless pain.
I also enjoy good jokes - which many here have done. I don´t get upset.
And finally, why is it so apparent to just conservatives - how no liberal is smart enough to take this argument to abortion? I am ashamed of human beings who supposedly have intelligence but can´t grasp this simple fact that we are intentionally hurting babies. This is truly unconscionable.

I wonder how many vegetarians know about the large number of cute furry animals, like bunnies, which are killed by machines used to harvest veggies. If they want to be true to their cause they should only buy veggies which have been hand picked at great cost, IOW, put your money where your mouth is.

I don´t trust veggies. Some have been known to eat meat. I have seen pitcher plants, that lure bugs yo it´s edges, and when the slip and fall in - chomp! (But slowly.) The Venus Flytrap will snap shut on any unwary bug that lands on it, and doesn´t ask the bug if it feels pain, or even cares! So I will also eat lobster and crab, and clams too, and I won´t worry about their pain. I never thought about it before, and I´ve already forgot about it since.

Jerusalem - Israel´s air force chief says his troops need to be ready to act quickly in case of an attack from Syria. The remarks by Maj. Gen. As the impasse over Tehran’s nuclear program worsens, those most likely to be directly affected by an Iranian bomb are showing greater alarm. While the media fixates on Israel and its possible reaction, other regional players have no less at stake. Despite Riyadh’s long-held advocacy of making the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, there has been much speculation in the past few years about the possibility of its acquiring, or developing, nuclear weapons should Tehran obtain the bomb. The Vatican has denied claims that Pope Francis performed an exorcism, after TV images showed a man apparently reacting to him putting his hands on his head. The encounter - during Sunday Mass - was shown on a TV channel owned by the Italian bishops´ conference. The station quoted exorcists as saying there was "no doubt" the Pope had either performed an exorcism or a prayer to free the man from the devil. Its director later apologised for "having altered the truth". The Pope´s spokesman said he "did not intend to perform any exorcism".

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.
