| ALBANY, N.Y. — The National Rifle Association says the secret negotiations and lightning-fast passage of New York’s tough new gun control laws squelched the powerful gun lobby’s ability to mount opposition. Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he had to engineer quick enactment to prevent a counterproductive buying spree of now-outlawed guns. The legislation was introduced and signed into law in less than two days.

If 73% of the state supports the new law, it seems that there was plenty of time for public input. The NRA is not going to win every battle in every state. It greatly overstates the percentage of the population which agrees with its positions 100%.

I watched this as it happened!
Of course, the AP deliberately omits these facts.
The bill spent 20 minutes in the rules committee, as these kleptocrats laughed and giggled before pushing the bill to the floor of the NY State Senate where it was voted on before the stroke of midnight without any opportunity for the citizens of New York to see the bill and without ANY DEBATE! The next day it went to the Democrat state Assembly and rubber stamped.
It was all there for everyone to see on the state´s streaming video system.
I am not making this up.
To call these the machinations of a banana republic would be an insult to banana republics everywhere!
This is not law making, this is tyranny.

More likely the GOP in the NY legislature threw gun-owners under the bus to preserve their nominal control of the NY Senate.

They passed this in the dark of the night and soon that three o´clock pounding on the door may be the Secret Police. The Left thinks the time has come to take off the mask. When will folks see the Children of Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot and Castro occupying the Democrat Party. Dictatorship coming to a state near you. All pretense is off. Voice your opinions here, but be aware we are probably already being monitored.

All they did was create a black market for the guns and magazines that they banned. New Yorkers who wish to purchase those items can easily leave the State and purchase them elsewhere. When millions of people have those items already, how are they ever going to prove when and where a magazine was purchased?
This is just another instance of the liberal Democrats taking away the rights of law abiding citizens because of the criminally insane acts of a few dangerous mental cases.
I can´t see Cuomo ever getting the votes that he would need outside of New York to get elected President in 2016.

I just heard Mark Levin say that these geniuses forgot to exempt police from the law, and as it is wriitn now, police will be in violation of the new law because most of their weapons hold 15 rounds.

re: Police Exemption
This is why public review and debate is needed. Politicians are writing laws about subjects they know nothing about.
Which begs the question, why are the police privileged enough use magazines that hold more than seven rounds?
A far better case can be made that police should be limited to 7 rounds, while civlians should not. A civilian or homeowner doesn´t have the benefit of a dispatcher calling him to tell him trouble is on his way. Nor does a civilian or homeowner have the benefit of a whole army of folks in blue dropping everything and coming to their assistance with arms when they are confronted with an armed criminal.
Ever go to a rifle and pistol range to see rank & file police officers shoot in the NY metropolitan area? I have done that plenty over the past 20 years, and I can say with a fairly high degree of confidence that most gun owners can outshoot at least 75% of the rank & file police force.
Given the performance of the NYPD over the years, I would trust most any civilian to shoot straight and true at a bad guy far more so than your average cop.

People who do not live in or know the state of New York, should not confuse what goes on in NYC and Albany with the rest of the state.
People are outraged at how this went down.
NYC is almost a state unto itself, and if it fell off into the ocean, the rest of the state wouldn´t miss it one bit.

So what #1? Most of those idiots live in NYC and like a typical big mouth from that city, they have NO idea what they are talking about. An inept Sec of HUD who lost billions with zero accountability is leading hordes of the low information morons around by their nose. The sheeple have no idea what is required to get a NY permit to own a legal handgun, because 12 million of them can´t. Cuomo might be popular with them, but he might also be insane. I heard him tell a reporter that one of the reasons for coming up with the magic number 7 per magazine, besides screwing most pistol owners, is that if a criminal ´grabs´ your gun, he can do less damage with 7 bullets. I think the thug meant it. He might actually believe it. The arbitrary law will be challenged and perhaps someone can toss a sanity test in there for the Gov before he hurts himself or others. Cuomo was really working himself into a frenzy on the confiscation angle. Breaking down doors might be ´popular´ with a surprising number of NYC sheeple, but we will see how all this plays out.

All you posters have NY down to a T. Cuomo is a pathelogical liar. He´s bragging all over that he capped property taxes. Guess what? Some things are exempt from the cap, like pension contributions which are bankrupting the counties.

DENVER - A group of Colorado sheriffs unhappy with recent gun control laws are planning to file a lawsuit to block them. The sheriffs have called a Friday morning news conference to detail their federal challenge. The lawmen said they would challenge two new laws, one limiting the size of ammunition magazines and another law to expand gun background checks. The laws were passed earlier this year in response to mass shootings in Aurora and at a school in Connecticut. Not all sheriffs opposed the bills, but some were frequent visitors to the state Capitol in an effort to prevent the gun controls.

Washington - Boston Mayor Tom Menino says information he has indicates that the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing acted alone. Menino tells ABC's "This Week" that he agreed with the decision to lock down Boston all day Friday, based on information officials had at the time. He tells ABC's "This Week" that a pipe bomb was found at another location and that another person was taken into custody. The mayor did not elaborate. One suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-KHAR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv), is in the hospital in serious condition. His older brother, Tamerlan, died in a police shootout

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama and his gun control allies say Senate rejection of expanded background checks and other restrictions won´t stop their drive to reduce firearms violence. But their path to enacting gun curbs this year seems blocked by the National Rifle Association, and supporters of restrictions appear befuddled about what it will take to push legislation through this Congress. The Senate planned to vote Thursday on two more amendments to a gun control bill. One by Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., would cut aid to state and local governments that release information on gun owners.

William Strickland waited for his grandfather to step out of his South Side home to take his paratransit ride to a kidney dialysis appointment early March 2, authorities said Saturday — then stood behind the 72-year-old man, shot him six times in the back and stole his wallet, leaving him to die just steps from his home. Prosecutors said Saturday that Strickland, 19, used the money he took from his grandfather, who also was named William Strickland, to pay for new gym shoes, a cellphone and tattoos. The teen had no criminal history but was an admitted gang member, they said.

The Second Amendment´s guarantee of a right to bear arms does not extend to the right to carry a concealed weapon in public, a federal appeals court in Denver has ruled. "We conclude that the carrying of concealed firearms is not protected by the Second Amendment . . ." Justice Carlos Lucero wrote on behalf of a three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Lucero cited case law dating to the 1800s that put restrictions on walking around in public with a gun. "In light of our nation's extensive practice of restricting citizens' freedom to carry firearms in a concealed manner,

Washington - The National Rifle Association is using a Justice Department memo it obtained to argue in ads that the Obama administration believes its gun control plans won´t work unless the government seizes firearms and requires national gun registration — ideas the White House has not proposed and does not support. (Snip) Justice Department and White House officials declined to provide much information about the memo or answer questions about it on the record. Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
