Notre Dame’s real dead woman

Less than a day into the Manti Te’o revelations, we’ve heard more about a fake dead girlfriend of a Notre Dame football player than a real dead girl. Lizzy Seeberg committed suicide, not long after being intimidated by Notre Dame football players for reporting a sexual assault by one of their teammates. A second woman who was taken to the hospital for a rape exam declined to formally accuse another Notre Dame football player after getting a series of bullying texts from players. The handful of people who immediately took note of the contrast in the attention —

This is why half the country tunes in every weekend to root against the Irish, who are continually marketed as a model program (granted, the graduation rate is tops in football) full of saintly young men who can do no wrong.

Why is this Manti Te´o all over the news, he lied, he was no victim, he just lied and was found out. Now can we go on to more important news like the unemployment figure, national debt, the hostages in Algeria that didn´t escape??

Ouch!

Talk about a serious witch-slapping!
Spanks to you, Notre Dame.
Stay tuned for the rest of the sordid details to dribble out ad nauseum.

Guess Johnny Football is off the hook now.
Got a little boisterous and had a chat with mom, dad, and the Athletic Director.

Johnny´s largely harmless shenanigans pale in comparison to this drama.

Now if only Brent Musburger can figuratively keep his pants and his Depend undergarments firmly in place.
Not to mention his roving eye and big mouth.
He´s a flirty old man, that one!

Once again, speculation presented as fact. The article she used as justification of the evils of the players was nothing more than speculation. A woman claiming she was raped isn´t always the facts. And the reason for the suicide was never made public so we don´t know it was because she was raped by a football player. Same with the other case. We witnessed the mass witch hunt in the Duke case. Might want to wait till all the facts are in before rendering a decision on ND football. ND football may well be out of control. But then again, it may not. We don´t know anything more one way or the other because of this woman´s opinion without all the facts presented.

Thank you, #4. A voice of reason amongst the "hang ´em now, get the facts later" crowd.

FAR: ´´Why is this Manti Te´o all over the news....´´

Because he is an ethnic minority and he has an exotic sounding name. You know the msm libs; They just can´t help loving such a person, regardless of his lies!

#4 and #5, I have a personal connection to this story. This is not speculation. What Notre Dame did to these young women, and how they continue to protect these players (the attacker has a known history of violence and did prior to his recruitment) is simply disgusting. I´m a devout catholic and was taught in catholic school to worship Notre Dame. ND is a disgrace and fans and alum should all be embarrassed and outraged by this. To paraphrase Lizzy Seeberg´s roommate in a recent Washington Post article-- God is not on Notre Dame´s side, how could He be?

I cant believe the Te´0 story led the news. It is funny, that is all. It is not a cheating, steroid or even a gambling story. He gained some support to try to get the Liesman Trophy. I enjoy th ecomedic value, that is it.

Geez, don´t lefties ever get a new wheeze? First Duke lacrosse, now this. I say rape is a dog whistle for haters of Catholicism.

If posters want to believe that the two women accusing ND football idols of rape are just faking it..why did one kill herself? Rape is more common by football/basketball players than you might imagine. Oh...did she ask for it? If so then I suppose she deserves to be dead. s/o

We live in a country that officially condemns rape and sexual assault but when confronted with the real possibility of it, rarely strays from denial and excuses.

"It depends upon what the meaning of the word ´is´ is."

The conduct towards Ms. Seeberg by Notre Dame and the players very expensive Chicago attorney (I wonder how he afforded him) was repugnant. Regardless of who´s right or wrong. Notre Dame must have learned from the Kennedy´s.

I have read Melinda Henneberger´s articles regarding the Seeberg case, and I am a little confused about what happened. The term "sexual assault" has been used in every article I´ve read, and there is no doubt that she was harassed and threatened by team members, but I don´t believe it has ever been claimed that she was raped. Unwanted advances, maybe. Groped, yes. But there is a big difference between something like that and being raped.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Thursday said the House won't pick up the Senate immigration bill and pass it. "The House remains committed to fixing our broken immigration system, but we will not simply take up and accept the bill that is emerging in the Senate if it passes," said the statement from Boehner, his top three lieutenants and Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction on immigration. "The House remains committed to fixing our broken immigration system, but we will not simply take up and accept the bill that is emerging in the Senate if it passes," the statement said. President Obama offers only weasel words to explain deaths in Libya and IRS abuses. He’s the master of verbal evasion. House Republicans need to replace debate with action to hold the president accountable on these issues. To get to the bottom of why four Americans died in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012, House Republicans should issue a formal resolution demanding to know where the president was on the night September 11 and what role he played. Obama needs to be put on the hot seat. Benghazi- For eight months, the White House has maneuvered

Much has been written and said about the astoundingly tone deaf performance of White House spokesman Jay Carney during this past month of scandals. The former journalist has lost the confidence of the people who were once his colleagues due to his unwillingness to tell the truth about his own deceptive statements (never mind those he represents in front of the press) about the Benghazi talking points or even to acknowledge that he has changed his story. The same applies to the shifting story he has told about the Internal Revenue Service scandal

A nonprofit connected to Rep. Corrine Brown (D., Fla.) and run by a local political power player overbilled Medicaid by nearly $1.4 million, the Florida Times-Union reported. According to an audit by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, the Community Rehabilitation Center in Jacksonville overbilled Medicaid by nearly $1.4 million. Reggie Gaffney, a former Jacksonville Port Authority board member, runs the nonprofit, which provides medical services for mental illness, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS for low-income residents. Brown’s daughter, Shantrel, is a lobbyist for Arlington-based Alcade and Fay, whose clients include the nonprofit. C

Former Cambridge neighbors of a Russian mixed martial arts brawler shot dead by an FBI agent early yesterday in Florida — after ?being questioned about his ties to the marathon bombing and a Waltham triple murder — said he was nasty. Ibragim Todashev, 27, also hung around with slain marathon bombing mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26 — swilling beer and eating chicken on a stoop on Harding Street, they said. “I was the happiest person when they moved. ... It’s a little more peaceful since they left,” a neighbor told the Herald yesterday of the Russian buddies.

The 2012 election season was filled with angry cries of “voter suppression,” almost all of them regarding attempts by states to require voter ID and otherwise improve ballot integrity. Bill Clinton warned that “there has never been — in my lifetime, since we got rid of the poll tax and all the other Jim Crow burdens on voting — the determined effort to limit the franchise that we see today.” Democratic-party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said “photo-ID laws, we think, are very similar to a poll tax.” All of this proved to be twaddle.

The Justice Department’s secret seizure of phone records from The Associated Press and its monitoring of Fox News reporter James Rosen are nothing less than thuggish attempts to criminalize the practice of journalism — the only profession specifically protected by the US Constitution. Free and open inquiry is also the cornerstone of our democracy, a legacy of the Enlightenment that found its clearest expression in the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” By which the Founders specifically meant political speech. They understood that, even with the checks and balances

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
