More than 8,000 New York City school bus drivers and matrons went on strike over job protection this morning, leaving some 152,000 students, many disabled, trying to find other ways to get to school. Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott said the strike started at 6 a.m. Wednesday. About 200 bus drivers and bus matrons were assembled on picket lines in the Queens section of the city. ´The first days will be extremely chaotic,´ Walcott told 1010 WINS radio. ´It hasn´t happened in New York City in over 33 years.´ The union did not immediately return calls Staff repaired headline.
The litte skool chirrun with their stuffed bookbags and backpacks wide eyed and eager to return to class surrouding his majesty as he signs the next $800 billion stimulas payoff to the bus drivers union. All because the republicans in Congress can´t compromise as some don´t want see our children have a chance at getting a decent education.
The strikers are all members of a local union with a long and recent history of mob ties. The strikers all work for private bus companies, are not NYC employees, and have no labor agreement with NYC. The strikers want NYC to guarantee their jobs, since the school bus contract is ending soon, and the City is about to solicit bids for new contracts. A totally illegal strike. How can the union possibly demand NYC guarantee the jobs of employees of a private company? They should terminate the existing contracts for cause, and solicit new non-union contracts. I guess Obama´s illegal recess-appointed NLRB commissioners will be working hard to resolve this travesty.
When the bus drivers in my district threatened a strike, moms quickly set up carpools. The bus drivers heard about it and decided not to strike. But then we´re more independent people out in flyover country and we own personal transportation which makes all the difference.
Have you noticed how driver´s unions and teacher´s unions never ever strike on their own time? They always have to screw the kids over. When it comes to a choice, liberals always seem to be about hurting the children and not themselves.
Have no pity on anyone in New York. They vote idiots into office so let them live in their own democrat utopia over taxed, over regulated, disarmed and oppressed. Like California, they are only semi-American.
What else did you expect from union thugs, the very idea that you want a level playing field that would reduce the massive yearly tribute to the thugs, in New York, not even close to reality.
The scum unions would lose that fight every time because it is all about money and power to hell with everything else.
Unions like this is the very reason that they are hated by the real working class. Once a very time ago unions were a good thing for the working man, then they decided that politics were more important than integrity, jobs and the membership and became thugs and nothing was more important than the power. That is why the unions are fighting so hard now because they are fading out and that would mean the the union people would have to compete and actually work for a job.
The union leadership would lose their plush offices and power and of course that would be unacceptable so they buy the corrupt politicians and try to get thru law what they know they will never get from the people.
Yes #10 and the fact that the good teachers remain silent and don´t say it from the rooftops also speaks volumes. To Democrats (including the parents of the school kids) the "children" come first except when they need to be used to get goodies for the unions.
Traces of prescription drugs have been found in far greater quantities in US drinking water supplies than previously thought, a study has claimed. A report on drinking water carried out by the Environmental Protection Agency has found samples of at least 25 different drugs, including medication to treat heart conditions, in supplies coming out of wastewater treatment plants. Medication to treat high blood pressure was not only the most commonly traced drug, but also found in the highest quantities. Health officials say that the traces of the drugs, which include over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen and prescription drugs such as
A number of Yahoo Mail users were blocked from their email accounts on Monday night - and three days later some people are still reporting problems. The company blamed the outage on a ‘hardware problem’ in a mail data centre but didn’t expand further and then last night, CEO Marissa Mayer tweeted claiming service had been restored. However, customers responded in anger to her tweet, claiming they still couldn’t access their emails, while others who had managed to gain access complained some of their emails were missing. Why did 91 heads of state and 71 so-called eminent persons fly from all the corners of the earth to attend Nelson Mandela’s memorial service on Tuesday? Most of them will doubtless have wanted to pay their respects to one of the great men of our age. [Snip] There can be jokes and laughter. But there is no room for larking about, especially if you are one of the leaders of the Free World. Larking about may scarcely cover the behaviour of President Barack Obama, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Prime Minister of Denmark, and our own David Cameron during the memorial service.
The handshake seen ´round the water cooler was no fluke, it turns out. When President Barack Obama approached the podium at Nelson Mandela´s memorial service and made a beeline for a row of foreign leaders--stopping first to shake Cuban dictator Raúl Castro´s hand--it came after representatives from the two historically antagonistic nations had already been in talks for six months. ´[B]ehind the scenes,´ two Daily Beast national security reporters wrote on Tuesday, ´U.S. and Cuban officials have held midlevel discussions in Havana and Washington on a range of issues, including direct postal service, migration issues, disaster response, and search and
Are you a Fomo sapiens? Judging by his behaviour at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, Barack Obama is a member of this new sub-species. So is our own Prime Minister, who should know better. The “Fomo” stands for Fear of Missing Out, a defining characteristic of a generation with itchy thumbs and short attention spans. Fomo sapiens cannot leave its phones, tablets or laptops alone, no matter how inappropriate the occasion. Checking your texts or updating your Facebook status during a funeral, for instance, or taking a happy-snap of yourself with a couple of mates during a memorial service. Those, I
The depressing news that Britain and the US have been forced to suspend assistance to the Syrian rebels effectively sounds the death knell for any remaining hope the moderate Syrian opposition may have entertained of defeating the Assad regime. As I have been warning for some months now, the Syrian opposition is now effectively in the hands of al-Qaeda and other hardline Islamist groups, which have a very different agenda to the secular-led Free Syrian Army (FSA), which has received the backing of Western powers since the country´s brutal civil war erupted nearly three years. The assistance provided by countries
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius struggled to fend off the latest round of barbs in a Capitol Hill hearing on Wednesday, following revelations that fewer than 365,000 Americans have enrolled for medical insurance through government-run marketplaces--including a federal website that will ultimate cost $677 million. [Snip] But as of Nov. 30, just over 137,200 Americans had chosen insurance policies through the perennially afflicted healthcare.gov. And nearly another 227,500 enrolled through the 14 state-run insurance exchanges, whose websites have experienced fewer problems. That puts the government about 835,000 enrollments--or 70 percent--behind its intermediate target.
New York — The anchor who might beat Bill O’Reilly gets her eyelash extensions applied one at a time, with tweezers and dabs of glue, about 90 minutes before showtime, right after a motorized gun sprays foundation over her face, neck, shoulders, collarbone and sternum, wiping out a galaxy of light freckles that spreads across her — Let me stop you right there. Photos of the day Uruguay legalizes marijuana, Kiev police pull back from protesters, aging U.S. prison population and more. Tuesday´s Photos of the day Would you write this way about a man? About O’Reilly himself? At least that’s what Megyn Kelly might ask at
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
In August 2013 I became very sick with what I thought was a cold. After a few days I lost vision in my left eye and I checked into the hospital. I soon found out that what I thought was a summer cold was actually Strep bacteria poisoning my blood stream. The bacteria blinded my left eye, ate a hole through my heart, caused five strokes on both sides of my brain and forced the removal of my prosthetic left knee. Dr. Lee was the surgeon assigned to perform open heart surgery. What was originally scheduled to last four hours ended
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
The health director who approved the release of President Obama’s birth certificate has died in a plane crash, Hawaiian officials said Thursday. Loretta Fuddy died after the Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft she was travelling on went down shortly after leaving Kalaupapa Airport at around 3:15 p.m. local time (10:15 a.m. ET) on Wednesday. The other eight people on board were rescued, Richard Schuman, president of Makani Kai Air, told NBC News early Thursday, adding that that there was no indication as to why the plane had crashed. Fuddy hit the headlines two years ago when she approved a waiver request allowing Obama to
