| Camp LeJeune, N.C. - A Marine who pleaded guilty Wednesday to urinating on the corpses of dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan will likely be demoted one rank under a plea agreement, although a military judge called for a much harsher sentence. Staff Sgt. Edward W. Deptola pleaded guilty to multiple charges at court-martial, including dereliction of duty for desecrating remains, posing for photographs with the corpses and failing to properly supervise junior Marines. The judge, Lt. Col Nicole Hudspeth, would have sentenced him to six months confinement, a $5,000 fine,

Comments: I am a complete supporter of our Armed Forces. But, not of this heinous action today [this happened in July, 2011]. After the embarrassment we went through because of similar actions earlier at Abu Ghraib [and imaging it] the "lesson" should have been learned NOT to engage in this type of desecration.
I´ve seen "Zero Dark Thirty," and any "torture" shown was so minimal to anything the Al Qaeda has or would be willing to do to captured American POW´s as to be boring.

The stuff that was done....maybe not right. But I wonder if the JAG judge has every stared down the barrel of a Taliban AK-47 or RPG launcher.

Little Hooded monk - "Heinous" is far too harsh an adjective for this Marine´s action. Dumb, stupid, uncouth would be better terms for his actions. The same for the use of "desecration", which should be used for religious symbols, not Taliban corpses. Prior to becoming corpses, these Talibsn were trying to kill these Marines, either with AK-47s or the viciously indiscriminate IED that severs legs and/or removes genitals, eyes and hands.
To criminalize dumbness in a war our Commander in Chief doesn´t mention, that few in the US care or even know about, and that our Marines and soldiers realize we are about to abandon, is the real crime. And, that our military is fighting under the most restrictive rules of engagement ever imposed on US forces.

Yep, they´ve got nothing better to do than go after this guy. He´ll be glad to get out and start his private life (if he can). Thanks, Marine. If you´re killed and the Taliban piddle on what´s left of your body, we´ll be really annoyed about that, m´kay?
Lt. Col Nicole (Oh I am too often ashamed of my gender these days) Hudspeth should be shunned. If I ever have a chance to meet her, I promise I will turn my back and walk away.

We have obviously become a country of (w)ussies. If you are going to punish anyone, publish the dang fool that recorded it! Dear Al Qaida (including our Dear Leader) - I urinate in your general direction. My father, still living and kickin´ rear, was a Marine in WWII, intimately involved in several of the ´interesting´ island battles of the Pacific. He can tell you that peeing on the dead of the enemy ain´t nothing to what the enemy does to you while you are still alive. Would Daniel Pearl care to comment?

He should not "plea" anything. He should avow, assert, shout from the rooftops that yea verily he did with full intent urinate, pee, expend bodily fluids upon an enemy (deceased) combatant. If we are not there to debase, denigrate, defile, defecate upon and defeat said enemy, then WHY for pities sake are we there bleeding upon foreign soil? He (and others) should "dare" the judges to find him guilty, thereby, showing their hypocrisy.
Sorry OP but ware is not a fun business and should be terrible. It should be so horrible that no sane being would want to engage in it. Unfortunately, the moslems are not sane; therefore, we need to make them fear deep into their very core. We need to make war so terrible for them that they would rather commit suicide. Oh, wait. They are insane. So, if you meet them on their terms, then your IQ is going south of the outside winter temperature in Alaska.

I suggest that if we had had more senior officers like Miss Lt. Col Nicole Hudspeth back during WW II, we would still be fighting Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan today.
There was a time when I was proud to be an American veteran.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued its 2013 Atlantic hurricane outlook on Thursday, with a warning that the United States could be hit by up to six major hurricanes this year. The seasonal average is three. Oceanic and atmospheric conditions in the Atlantic basin are expected to create stronger and more hurricanes, setting the stage for an “above normal and extremely active” season, said Gerry Bell, lead seasonal hurricane forecaster for NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, who explained the underlying reasons in a NOAA video.

Washington - President Obama said Thursday he was troubled by the possibility that leak investigations may "chill" investigative journalism and said he had asked Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. to review Justice Department guidelines for going after reporters or their records. "Journalists should not be at legal risk for doing their jobs. Our focus must be on those who break the law," Obama said, referring to those who leak secret information. The statement seemed to mark a departure for the president, who has been particularly determined to investigate those in his administration who leak national

Niamey, Niger - Suicide bombers in Niger detonated two car bombs simultaneously, one inside a military camp in the city of Agadez and another in the remote town of Arlit at a French-operated uranium mine, killing 26 people and injuring 30, according to officials in Niger and France. (Snip) The timing of the attacks, which occurred at the same moment more than 160 kilometers (100 miles) apart, and the fact that the bombers were able to penetrate both a well-guarded military installation and a sensitive, foreign-operated uranium mine, highlight the growing reach and sophistication of the Islamic

Washington - Lois Lerner, the head of the Internal Revenue Service’s division on tax-exempt organizations, was put on administrative leave Thursday, a day after she invoked the Fifth Amendment and declined to testify before a House committee investigating her division’s targeting of conservative groups. Lawmakers from both parties said Thursday that senior I.R.S. officials had requested Ms. Lerner’s resignation but that she refused, forcing them to put her on leave instead. Whether her suspension will lead to dismissal was unclear, given Civil Service rules that govern federal employment.

Phoenix - Jurors who spent five months determining Jodi Arias´ fate couldn´t decide whether she should get life in prison or die for murdering her boyfriend, sending prosecutors back to the drawing board to rehash the shocking case of sex, lies and violence to another 12 people. Judge Sherry Stephens gave a heavy sigh as she announced a mistrial in the penalty phase of the case Thursday and scheduled a July 18 retrial. "This was not your typical trial," she told jurors. "You were asked to perform some very difficult duties." As the panel filed out of the courtroom,

Spanish engineers, who already spent some $680 million on designing the new generation S-80 class submarine, say it is a major “technical innovation.” There is just one problem the calculations show – if submerged into water, it may never come up again. The Spanish media has been furiously discussing the errors made by the state-owned Navantia construction company, which has spent about a third of the huge $2.2 billion budget only to produce an ‘overweight’ submarine that is not able to float. Spain’s Ministry of Defense has confirmed that Navantia detected “deviations”

“He was not radical at all,” Taramov told WESH-TV. He added that the FBI had been tracking Todashev since the Boston bombings. At some point, Todashev moved to Florida. He was arrested for aggravated battery this month, according to police records, after getting into a fight with a man in a parking lot. When the FBI agent and others arrived at his apartment early Wednesday, the law enforcement officials said Todashev initially was cooperative. They said he appeared on the verge of signing a confession to the killings of three people in Waltham in September 2011.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
