Several British workers are at the centre of a terrorist hostage crisis at a BP gas plant in Algeria after al-Qaeda fighters attacked the complex in apparent retaliation for the French intervention in Mali. At least one British worker was said to have been killed in the early morning assault at the Saharan facility. Several others were taken captive along with dozens of Norwegian, American, Japanese and French workers. The Islamists claimed to be holding 41 foreigners hostage, with reports suggesting that another 150 Algerian workers had been prevented from leaving the plant, which is about 60 miles from the

This can´t be true. Didn´t Obama do away with the risk from al-Qaeda? Anyway, it´s too much of a coincidence to have happened on the day Obama announces his plans to start taking guns from Americans. /s

It must suck...being British...obviously weak...that´s what we are, you know...
Yes, construct that chain...please do so....also know that it will be broken in Britain.

I don´t know why these Middle Eastern countries send their young people to universities in the United States. They learn a hell of a lot faster over there than we do here. Benghazi showed the terrorists that our leaders are all bark and no bite. Zip, zero, nada, bite. America, Britain, France expect more of the same. I feel so ashamed, especially when I look back and see how Reagan and George W responded to our people being attacked. If Obama were a true American he would hang his head in shame.

Since the terrorists have now murdered a British person it is time for the British to send a commando unit like the old time Long Range Desert Group to that region and take out the terrorists, 800 miles of desert was nothing to the Long Range Desert Group when they operated in North Africa from 1940 to 1943 while using the technology of that age.

After America: Syria shows
what the world without Pax

A revanchist Russia ships arms to her allies. Iranian revolutionary guards arrive along the eastern Mediterranean seaboard. The world, it seems, can be a dangerous place. The escalating conflict in Syria is not merely a reminder of what nasty regimes can do. More ominously, it illustrates what can happen when America--still the world’s great power--sits back. Tyrants are emboldened. Regional bully boys, hemmed in by the international order, start to push and to probe. Perhaps it is just Barack Obama. [Snip] Are we ready for a world with less of the Pax Americana?

I wonder what it will take before the world truly wakes up to the horror, the corruption, the expense, the pointlessness, the total wrongness-in-every-way of the wind industry. My guess--and it will happen--is the decapitation, by a rogue turbine blade, of an innocent passer-by. Till then, though, we have photographs like this to send the mind boggling as to why anyone, anywhere can still be so purblind as to go on championing these bat-chomping, bird-slicing eco crucifixes. What´s particularly interesting about this one is that it was taken in the constituency of one of wind power´s most fervent and tireless

Britain could get £10billion

Every family in Britain could be £380 better off from a landmark trade deal between the United States and Europe. David Cameron hailed the ‘biggest bilateral trade deal in history’ at the launch of negotiations for an agreement which could be worth £100 billion to the European Union economy. In the first major announcement of the G8 summit in Northern Ireland, Mr Cameron and US President Barack Obama removed their ties to strike a casual look at the Lough Erne resort. Mr Cameron had been keen to use this week´s summit in start the formal talks to strike a deal

The Obama girls appeared to have perked up on their trip to Dublin as they pulled a series of wacky faces during a performance of Riverdance. Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11, had looked less than enthralled earlier on Monday as they toured the historic Book of Kells with their mother at Trinity College in the capital. However the First Lady and her daughters were having a roaring good time as they sat among schoolchildren at Dublin´s Gaiety Theatre, pulling cross-eyed expressions as students surreptitiously snapped them with camera phones. The President, his wife and daughters touched down in Belfast amid

US President Barack Obama touched down in Belfast today amid the biggest security operation ever mounted in Northern Ireland. Air Force One arrived at Aldergrove International Airport, 20 miles north of the city, where the President emerged from the plane with his wife, Michelle, and two daughters, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11. While Obama holds talks with other world leaders at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland, Michelle and their children are due to visit the Republic. This afternoon they will visit Dublin´s Trinity College to view the Book of Kells, a ninth Century gospel manuscript.

Syria: the price of

My colleague Boris Johnson has presented the most eloquent possible case for the Western world (as we used to call it) refraining from adding to the armoury that is now producing unfathomable horror in Syria. Pouring more lethal equipment into an already hideous scene of mass murder can surely make no moral or tactical sense, he argues. Prolonging and equipping a fight to the death between religious factions can help no one--least of all the blameless people of Syria who are caught in this hell. I take all of those points. And yet, and yet… What are those blameless people--who

Iran is preparing to send 4,000 troops in to Syria to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the wake of America´s announcement it will be providing ´military aid´ to the country´s Muslim rebels. President Barack Obama made the pledge earlier this week after the U.S. claimed it found ´conclusive evidence´ Assad´s regime has used chemical weapons against the rebel forces--which includes the most extreme Sunni Islamists--and has called for Britain and France to back the move. While Britain hasn´t made a guarantee either way as yet, more than 350 Royal Marines are being sent to Jordan

In the latest black eye for the scandal-ridden State Department, a whistleblower claims she was run out of the foreign service after complaining about a consul general’s alleged office trysts with subordinates and hookers.Kerry Howard says she was bullied, harassed and forced to resign after she exposed US Consul General Donald Moore’s alleged security-threatening shenanigans in the Naples, Italy, office. As the post’s community-liaison officer, Howard was charged with keeping workplace peace and advising higher-ups on the state of morale, but when she revealed allegations about her boss, State Department officials swept it under the rug,

Who is he? Obama keeps allies,

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. And Sarah blasted him on Twitter as a bully. Is that, is it, is he a bully? Is he a bad, what is he?

Gang of Eight member Bob Menendez advised Republicans to accept legalization status for current illegal immigrants if they ever want to see another president from their party. “I would tell my Republican colleagues — both in the House and the Senate — that the road to the White House comes through a road with a pathway to legalization,” the New Jersey senator said on State of the Union this morning. “Without it, there’ll never be a road to the White House for the Republican party.” Menendez also warned of triggers on border security

Politico’s Playbook has an excerpt from a new Ryan Lizza piece from the New Yorker that is not yet online. It contains a passage on the back-and-forth between labor and the Chamber that has a quote from a Rubio staffer that is going to raise eyebrows, to say the least: “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it. There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. And so you can’t obviously discuss that publicly.” Here is the entire context:
