NRA planning ‘the fight of
the century’ against Obama

The National Rifle Association cast its opposition to Obama’s plans as “the fight of the century” in a letter circulated at the 35th annual Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference, known in the trade as “the SHOT show,” in Las Vegas. “I warned you this day was coming and now it’s here,” Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s fiery executive vice president, wrote in a fund-raising letter to the group’s 4 million members. “It’s not about protecting your children. It’s not about stopping crime. It’s about banning your guns … PERIOD!”

#1: cowering in their hidey holes. Sadly, we´re pretty much unrepresented in the federal government in this struggle.

Just became a life member of Gun Owners of America.

IMHO it is a better organization than the NRA. I´m just a yearly member of nRA.

Fine and dandy #3, but it is the NRA that is taking on the fight, up front and personal.

It is up to us.

Call your representative.

Write letters to the editor of your local rag.

Speak out and speak up in public when the situation arises.

The NRA is well worth joining. Even if you don´t hunt, the monthly magazine keeps you up to date on the political activities in Washington and each state. The GOA is also a good organization, but they don´t have the networks and infrastructure of the NRA. Join both!

Wayne LaPierre´s letter to NRA members was excellent! The NRA isn´t going to take this lying down, and neither are we legal firearms owners. I read that the NRA has a quarter million new members over the past month alone.

Obama´s jumped the shark on this one. It was only a matter of time before Obama´s boundless hubris got the better of him, and that moment is approaching, fast.

As soon as I can afford it I am upgrading to a lifetime NRA membership. Last week I renewed my membership for three years...and I don´t even have a gun (yet.) I always enjoy reading NRA´s First Freedom...never thought in a million years it is now up to me as an NRA member to be actively ´on point´ in the fight to defend the 2nd Amendment from King Øbama.

What I heard Obama say this morning was that he wants the Congress to ban right away a class of firearms that Obama referred to as being "assault weapons". Depending how you define "assault weapons" could mean banning just about all modern semi-automatic handguns and rifles that are produced and sold in the USA today.

At the same time, Obama referred to the mentally ill, a criminally insane few of who perpetrated the recent mass shootings, as being "victims", and made no mention at all of the very violent movies, TV programs, and video games produced by the Hollywood and entertainment industries, that give young people in small towns like the one in Connecticut the ideas of what real violence is about, something they would never know about if they did not watch those violent movies, TV programs, and especially the very addictive violent video games.

I figure Obama would claim that he gave a "balanced" presentation, as the US small arms, related industries and the majority of gun enthusiasts are considered to be conservative Republican oriented constituency groups, with the Hollywood and entertainment industries along with the mental health and the mentally ill being liberal Democrat constituency groups.

Y´all think the GOP will notice the increase in support for the NRA when they fight for the preservation of our Constitutional rights & start showing some backbone of their own in defense of the values they tell us they support?

Me neither.

New emails between Internal Revenue Service officials released Wednesday as part of congressional testimony give a better view of who knew of the screening of conservative tea party groups and the search terms being used, and when they knew it. The documents also show a bit of the process the IRS used in such situations, but do not answer the question at the heart of the controversy – who made the decision to search for such groups and why. The string of emails is from early June 2011, sparked by a request from Holly Paz,

WASHINGTON — As they watched President Obama lumber into controversy over mandating contraception coverage last winter, some White House staffers were banging their heads against the wall. The lawyers had done it again. Tensions between operatives and the lawyers hired to protect them from legal trouble are a constant in politics. But as President Obama’s beleaguered aides look for someone to blame in an escalating series of scandals, former political, communications, and policy officials complained to BuzzFeed that one culprit is a balance that has tilted too far toward the lawyer, allowing avoidable controversies to boil over.

With Anthony Weiner about to pop into the race for mayor, one of his Democratic rivals demanded yesterday that he pony up $350,000 for the cost of the election required to fill his hastily vacated congressional seat two years ago. Weiner resigned under pressure in June 2011 after it was disclosed he was tweeting lewd pictures of himself to women he’d met on the Internet. In the special election held that September to replace him, Republican Bob Turner pulled off a stunning upset victory over Democrat David Weprin. Taxpayers were stuck with the $350,000 election tab,

After a week of revelations about government spying on reporters and the Internal Revenue Service targeting conservatives, most voters feel “like the federal government has gotten out of control and is threatening the basic civil liberties of Americans.” At the same time, a new Fox News poll finds disapproval of President Obama’s job performance is above 50 percent for the first time in a year, his honesty rating is at a new low and half of voters already think he’s a lame-duck.

The New York Times editorial board has condemned the Obama administration for threatening press freedom in the wake of revelations that the Justice Dept. seized phone records belonging to Fox News reporter James Rosen. "With the decision to label a Fox News television reporter a possible ´co-conspirator´ in a criminal investigation of a news leak, the Obama administration has moved beyond protecting government secrets to threatening fundamental freedoms of the press to gather news," the board wrote in an editorial published on Wednesday. From the outset, Internal Revenue Service lawyers based in Washington, D.C., provided important guidance on the handling of tea-party groups’ applications for tax-exempt status, according to both IRS sources and the inspector general’s report released in mid May. Officials in the Technical Unit of the IRS’s Rulings and Agreements office played an integral role in determining how the targeted applications were treated, provided general guidelines to Cincinnati case workers, briefed other agency employees on the status of the special cases, and reviewed all those intrusive requests demanding “more information” from tea-party groups.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, whose career in public life came to an abrupt end when he sent lewd pictures to a college student on Twitter, jumped back into politics on Wednesday by announcing a bid for mayor of New York City. “Look, I’ve made some big mistakes and I know I’ve let a lot of people down,” the Democrat said in a 2-minute video announcing his bid. “But I’ve also learned some tough lessons. I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
