WASHINGTON— Without waiting for Congress, President Barack Obama on Wednesday announced a sweeping $500 million program to curb gun violence, setting up a fight over universal background checks and bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting. Obama also used his presidential powers to issue 23 orders that don´t require congressional approval. The largely incremental executive steps include requiring federal agencies to make more data available for background checks, appointing a fulltime director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and directing the Centers

Interesting how the tragic act of a deranged individual merits a massive response, but the deliberate, coordinated, criminal activities of the executive branch, called "Fast and Furious", are marginalized and ignored.

Where is the money coming from?
Was it authorized by the House?
I guess since we haven´t had a budget for 3 years, we don´t need one, and Obama can spend whatever he wants on anything.
Unless there is an appropriations bill to back this spending, the House should shut him down

That jive high five to the fur children at the end of his muddled comments was absolutely inappropriate.
We have a wannabe ghetto thug as president, who is an advocate for illegal drug use, which, in turn, is the basis for the gang violence as they carve out sales areas.

So, is anyone going to ask a school principal or official or the Prezy how this makes things better when a bad guy approaches a school with weapons? The schools are disarmed.Any location that does not allow guns is a target. So,no matter how many laws, rules, whatever, bear in mind: a criminal does NOT follow rules. The most vulnerable are still vulnerable, unprotected and sitting ducks.

I though that Congress spent all the money.

Obama has not spent one minute in Chicago speaking with his own Southside neighbors about the deaths of their innocent children at the hands of the thug "children" of his other neighbors. These are the same people who turn out to welcome him adoringly when he deigns to make rare trip back to the house....A house that needs 3 shifts of ARMED Secret Service to guard it while it stands empty. (He usually stays elsewhere when in Chicago).

To those with children in school: are you seriously worried about gun violence affecting your child? I´m not. These shootings are isolated incidents carried out by mentally ill people. Would any of these new measures have prevented this shooting? I think not. The guns were legally-owned and registered. How would more gun control of the type they are talking about prevent a mentally ill son from stealing his mother´s legally-owned guns?

After reading all of the executive orders the only thing I´m worried about is the future of the GOP: there is nothing in there that infringes on the rights of the second amendment and if the GOP continues to lie to the public and/or act like the sky is falling whenever Dear Leader does something, they will lose all credibility. The GOP used to be the rational, sober party. Now it´s full of hysterical bomb throwers.

We´d all be better off if the $500 million were to be dedicated to getting the psychotics in our midst into institutions. If romantic liberals in the "caring professions" hadn´t pushed for the deinstitutionalizing of crazies, there would have been no Aurora, no VMI, no Tucson and no Sandy Hook.

But I suppose they´re useful tools for the gun haters.

Requiring background checks for the sale of private arms is nothing more than the govt initiating and maintaining a database of gun ownership.

It´s forced registration.

I will NOT do that. We must resist.

If you want to buy a gun from me and have cash and an ID, you got it. Big Bro can go pound sand.

Unfortunately, I don´t have any guns. I lost all my guns in the flood, the hurricane, the tornado, a burglary, and those that I did manage to save were sold by my ex-wife while I was in jail in Mexico. So I now live in a gun free zone.

Hope your gun situation is better than mine.

When has obama ever had justification for anything he has done? We need not look for a reason because there is none. We can blame ourselves and our no-guts congress for standing by and watching him act like dictator of the world. An all out gun grab will be more difficult than an information exchange since his people will be trampling on the constitution while we defend it. Now there´s justification fer ya.

The $500 million would be better spent for health care for those who truly cannot afford health care and are unable to work.

The school districts have budgets to hire armed guards and those who fail to, do so at their own peril.

Where does the $500 million price tag come from?

"provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations".

Give...me...a...break. What´s a school principal going to do, confront a mentally ill shooter, make a pistol shape with his index finger and thumb, point it at the criminal and say, make my day, Jack?

You can tell these EO´s are garbage and coming from Bite Me´s meetings.

Universal background checks means banning private sales and this is GUN REGISTRATION. Registration lists are only used to confiscate.

I agree with #6. WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM? The House has to pass all spending bills, and this needs to be specifically blocked.

The cash infusion by the federal government is actually going to help the city pay pensions, even though they´re playing a kind of shell game with the money. As for "blight removal," perhaps they could start with city hall. Reuters: Michigan officials and President Barack Obama´s Administration are discussing a plan to free up $100 million in federal money to aid Detroit´s retired city workers, the Detroit Free Press reported on Tuesday. Carson was born in Iowa and moved to Norfolk with his family in the 1930s. They lived in at least one other house in Norfolk before moving into to the white, wood-frame structure on 13th Street. Built in the 1920s, the house featured a small kitchen, dining room and living room on the main floor, while the second floor contained a bathroom, several bedrooms and an enclosed porch. Although the Civil Rights Act, the landmark legislation which just reached its 50th anniversary, made great strides in desegregating the economy, economic discrimination is still widespread, and anti-discrimination legislation alone can never rectify the economic damage inflicted upon blacks by slavery and our Jim Crow apartheid regime. The Civil Rights Act was a mild reform, all things considered, but one conservatives fought with vigor and one many conservatives are still bitter about to this day. When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, the primary purpose was to root out discrimination in public accommodations (like hotels and movie theaters)
