Salmon fishing in the Tay:
Beautiful pictures as fishermen enjoy the
start of Scotland´s angling season with
pipe bands... and lots of whisky

A procession with a pipe band and anglers made its way through Kenmore in Scotland today to mark the start of the 2012 salmon season on the River Tay. The traditional ceremony was led by a piper who took anglers to the riverbank, where drams were shared before the fishermen´s boats - and the water - were blessed with a dousing of whisky. Last year it was estimated that nearly 7,000 salmon and grilse were caught on the Tay, where a policy of 100 per cent catch and release for spring salmon is now operated.

Comments:
Some beautiful photos to soothe the mind.

P.S. Scotch whisky has no E.

Och aye! Gorgeous pictures! Thanks for posting.
Wish I could hear the pipes there.

When I fish, I never cast my rod; why throw that out? Most fishermen (and women) cast their lure!
I know, I´m being a little picky this morning, but my knee is aching, and I have to complain about something.
But the pictures were great, and reminded me of back when they had an opening day in Mass. The banks of Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester were crowded like those in the pictures. And it could be cold, too.

Great photos of a beautiful place. Releasing 100% would seem to suggest that this is more of an historical reenactment than actual fishing though.

What beutiful pictures, a great way to start the day. I especially loved the pictures of little Kiera.

For those wondering, a Grilse is a young (and therefore small) salmon. I was glad to see the implementatikon of catch and release rules for the salmon fishery. Atlantic salmon populations the world over are under enourmous pressure.

Stocks in Canada have dwindleed and only a very few rivers in America still have an annual salmon run. Pollution from the mills in the Northeast killed the salmon runs over 100 years ago. Efforts to reintroduce salmon into the Connecticut river have been spotty at best. Large numbers of smolt are released each year but returns are too few to effectively bred.

There is a trick to getting the fisj to return to the river they were released from, one we have not yet figured out. Salmon return to the exact same little stream they were born in and we have no idea how that place becomes implanted in their miniscule brain. Apparently though salmon born in a hatchery pond don´t implant well if at all.

As we have cleaned up our rivers they now run clear, cold and clean enough to once again support these magnificent fish. I truly hope we figure out how to get them back.

A sign of hope? After more than a century of absence Atlantic salmon suddenly reappeared in the river Seine a few years ago. No reintroduction program was in effect, just mother nature finding a way.

Wow! Thank you for posting.

It brings back good memories of my vacations in Scotland. If anyone gets the chance to go there, stay in Kenmore. It is on Loch Tay. There is a poem on one of fireplaces by Bobby Burns.

And check out the Dewars distillery in Aberfeldy.

Nothing tastier than salmon from the wild. Smoked, poached, grilled, baked ... just wonderful. My favorite is smoked salmon with an iced cold lager.

Dan Pfeiffer’s job title is “senior advisor to the president for strategy and communications.” And on five television shows Sunday, he all too clearly communicated the White House’s strategy of remaining unclear on pertinent details about scandals now dogging President Barack Obama. “Fox News” host Chris Wallace pressed Mr. Pfeiffer on “one lingering question” about last Sept. 11’s terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya: “What did the president do that night?” After Mr. Pfeiffer tried a few end runs, Mr. Wallace asked: “Was he in the Situation Room?”

As the wind ripped off the roof of one of the bathrooms, they all sang "You Are My Sunshine" to remain calm. A number of heartless looters have emerged amid the tragedy of the deadly Oklahoma tornado, storming a storm-damaged hospital facility and helping themselves to various items, a report claims. Reports of looting came in as Moore, one of the hardest-hit towns in the storm, deals with the loss of more than 51 people who have been confirmed dead, and another 120 injured. The vandals were spotted at the Moore Medical Center, a small facility that sustained damage in the twister. It was a location that was hit hard by the twister, and where rescuers sprung into action to get 15

Neighborhoods south of Oklahoma City have suffered catastrophic damage after a two mile-wide tornado touched down in a highly-populated suburb on Monday afternoon, flattening entire schools and wiping out hundreds of homes in one of the worst storms the area has ever seen. As hail thundered down and heavy winds began whipping the area of Moore, a storm warning went off just before 3pm local time, alerting the 170,000 residents within the area to seek shelter. After about 35 minutes on the ground, the tornado appeared to dissipate. Devastating aerial images taken immediately afterwards show schools completely flattened by the

I have come to Springdale because it is a harbinger of America´s future. Ten years ago there were hardly any Latinos here--now they make up more than 30% of the population. The Hungarian prime minister has drawn outrage in Germany after drawing parallels with comments made by Angela Merkel about sending "cavalry" to Hungary and the Nazi occupation of his country. Viktor Orban however brought up the Second World War. "The Germans have already sent cavalry to Hungary: they came in form of tanks," said the prime minister in a radio interview on Friday. Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Sunday that the IRS scandal reveals a ´culture of intimidation´ in the Obama Administration that is bent on making it more difficult for ´citizens to organize and express themselves.´ In an interview on NBC´s ´Meet the Press´ McConnell, however, backed away from claims by fellow Kentucky Senator Rand Paul that IRS officials has circulated a memo directing tax collectors to give tougher scrutiny to any groups that were critical of the president. ´The investigation has just begun so I´m not going to speculate on what they may find, but what we do know

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
