| I t´s a great big universe, and we´re all really puny. Yes, humankind is probably even more insignificant than we ever could have imagined, thanks to new findings from a team of astronomers in the U.K. For the odd-looking heptagon structure seen here represents the largest observable object in the known universe. The Huge-LQG (Large Quasar Group), as it´s been dubbed, is a grouping of 73 quasars, or galactic nuclei — which are all thought to have been at the heart of their own respective galaxies at one point — and stretches 4 billion light years across its longest axis.

This is scientific malarkey. If you go to the latest paper (http://mnras.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2013/01/07/mnras.sts497.full.pdf ) You´ll see that the group size is determined statistically by a statistical analysis of next-nearest neighbors. If you look at Figure 1, depicting the so called group, you´ll see that it really consists of three groups--a loop at the bottom right, a central linear group and a linear group at the top. This is much like anthropic global warming--hoopla generated by unknowledgeable media.

Why does humankind always have to be insignificant? It´s hugely significant. While this discovery is fascinating, what´s actually insignificant is the usefulness of this information in our lives.
The efforts to trivialize the value of people continue apace.

It happens now and then. You hear a story so sad, so beautiful, so filled with loss and pain and grief and love, that it makes you cry. Really cry. Two years ago, I was making a grocery run for my family on Memorial Day when a story came on the local NPR station in Oxford, Miss. It was about a father whose son had been killed in action in northwest Afghanistan. The father was Paul Monti; his son was Sergeant Jared Monti. Jared died in Afghanistan trying to save the life of one of his men.

What would help a lot right now, as the chilling reality of savagery engulfs us, would be a cultural green light to begin calling evil what it is, to begin calling it by its name, to stop dancing around demographics because of the fear someone, somewhere will take offense. President Obama’s speech at the National Defense University calling for an end to the war on terror forces the question of who gets to declare peace. The Left wing in our political debate has been agitating for some time to repeal the authorization to use military force that the Congress passed after 9/11. The President boarded the bandwagon yesterday.
