| CINCINNATI — A former high school teacher is accusing school district administrators of discriminating against her because of a rare phobia she says she has: a fear of young children. Maria Waltherr-Willard, 61, had been teaching Spanish and French at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati since 1976. (Snip) In her lawsuit against the district, filed in federal court in Cincinnati, Waltherr-Willard said that her fear of young children falls under the federal American with Disabilities Act and that the district violated it by transferring her in the first place

Way past time for this old broad to retire - teachers have a thankless job, but you have to deal with kids as a teacher. I would not want her teaching my kids or grandkids.

The Americans with Disabilities Act was passed with every good intention. But the courts have taken it into a strange set of directions, especially with psychiatric issues.
And juries have ruled in favor of plaintiffs while failing to understand the law.
This woman can be reasonably accommodated, I guess, if the school moves her to h.s. teaching.

She´ll win the case here in Ohio. My sister taught with a woman, and this was 25 years ago, who blamed teaching kids for her mental illness (made up) and got disability pay for the rest of her life.

She did not say all kids scared her, only young kids. That is probably why she took courses to teach high school. But the district kept moving her to schools with younger children. The knowledge base used to teach middle- and high-school children is probably mostly compatible. The knowledge base to teach elementary school is entirely different. Many schools put teachers in classrooms they are not qualified to teach.
They were finding a reason to fire her, for whatever reason, and took her out of both her skill- and comfort-zones to do it.

Americans in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll sharply reject special scrutiny of conservative groups by the Internal Revenue Service, suspect an administration cover-up of the Benghazi incident and express substantial distrust of the federal government more generally. (Snip) Longer-term impacts of contentious current issues remain to be seen, but there´s potential for significant damage to the administration. Americans by a vast 74-20 percent see the IRS´ behavior as inappropriate, with most feeling that way strongly - and 56 percent see it as a deliberate attempt to harass conservative organizations, not a mere administrative error.

A massive tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., Monday afternoon, leveling a huge swath of a residential area in the suburb of Oklahoma City. Video footage from KFOR-TV showed houses, businesses and at least two schools completely demolished, with cars strewn about. Police and emergency crews have begun to respond, but debris has clogged roadways. There is no tally yet on injuries or deaths, but news anchors said significant casualties are expected. LOS ANGELES - More poor people live in the nation´s suburbs than in urban cities because of affordable housing, service-sector jobs and the increased use of housing vouchers, according to a study released Monday. The number of those in poverty living in suburbs jumped 67 percent between 2000 and 2011, a much larger increase than in cities, researchers for the Brookings Institution said. Suburbs, however, still have a smaller percentage of the poor than cities do. The report notes that poor people were pulled to the suburbs by more affordable homes and followed jobs that were often low paying.

Minnesota drivers are paying the highest gas prices in the 48 contiguous states, with the average price statewide running at $4.27 per gallon, according to AAA’s daily survey of gas prices. Average prices are even higher in the Twin Cities metro area at $4.31 for a gallon of unleaded gas, the report said. Drivers in Hawaii were paying the highest, at $4.35 per gallon, while those in Tennessee were paying the lowest, at $3.26. The national average is $3.63. In Duluth, the average price Monday morning was $4.32, while in Rochester it was $4.12. St. Cloud stations were reporting $4.24

Not so along the less developed north coast where it´s customary to ditch cars on the shoulder of Highway 1 to surf, swim or picnic. That sandy line that long defined the state´s disparate beach culture may soon fade. In search of new revenue, the state parks system is eyeing parking fees for parts of the Northern California shoreline where none existed or considering hiking rates to visit popular beaches south of Los Angeles during peak periods.

A shooting as the Warriors game let out Thursday night left two fans dead - the driver of a Porsche was killed by bullets and the passenger was killed as he staggered out onto Interstate 880 in Oakland. Now, police are turning to Warriors fans and nearby surveillance video from the O.co Coliseum for help in finding the killers. Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said Friday that the two men were leaving the arena about 10:35 p.m., when the shooting broke out. The victims identities were not released Friday, but the driver was a 30-year-old man

White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
