Holiday sales reported by retail
group weaker than expected

The Record [Hackensack, NJ], by Joan Verdon

Retail sales for Christmas 2012 were significantly weaker than expected, with sales in November and December increasing only 3 percent, missing a forecast of a 4.1 percent gain, the National Retail Federation reported today. The federation, which is hosting a gathering of more than 27,000 retailers from around the world this week at the Javits Center in Manhattan, said the results proved that all of the fiscal-cliff talk and economic uncertainty in December scared shoppers from spending.(Snip) The NRF called the increase "healthy," coming as it did on top of a higher base set in holiday 2011, when

Comments:
Adjust for inflation and especially for the fact that a dollar buys increasingly shoddy merchandise (a shirt today is not the same quality as one bought 10 years ago, and thus not comparable) and we see a sharp drop in spending.

Economy´s never been more sound, though; just ask the government media.

Can´t speak for anyone other than me but I knew my taxes and insurance was going to jump in 2013 so needed all the money I could save. One can´t buy stuff when one can´t print unlimited amounts of money or borrow from the last bastion of capitalism, the communist Chinese.

And just read that 40% of all online retail purchases are RETURNED to the store.

I´ll bet for the cash.

This economy is in horrible shape despite over $1 trillion pumped in by Obama and the Democrats each of the last 4 years.

Millions have stopped looking, or aren´t qualified to fill many jobs today.

Democrats keep looking to increase the costs of gasoline, electricity and food which affects the poor, low-income and middle class the most.

Denying coal, oil and other mining operations only increases our costs more, and prevents job creation.

Its the same story every year. I can´t remember the last time retailers weren´t whining about their sales not being good enough.

Why would they be surprised. People do not have money and taxes and insurance costs have gone up. Things would have been better with Romney as President.

I believe the retailers have forgotten almost entirely about the ´goods for sale´ part of the transaction.

A Chinese-made $5 sweatshirt marked up to $50 only to be discounted 10%, then 20%, then 30% in a desperate bid for shoppers is still a $5 Chinese-made sweatshirt.

Anyone paying attention knew this - duh. My wealthier neighbors all admitted Christmas scaled back this last year by quite a bit. If we were not totally out of debt, we would have done the same. If people hadn´t used credit cards, the sales numbers would have been terrifyingly low.

They aren´t factoring in the people out of work, and particularly the ones who have run out of unemployment insurance. I guess the welfare recipients who get $60,000 a year (including benefits) were still able to have Christmas.

All of this liberal media coverage is outright lies.

Unemployment is soaring and getting worse. Overall retail sales, other than trendy gadgets, are in the tank. Groceries and energy have quadrupled. And, taxes are soaring in every taxable service/product in the most expensive States.

Do not believe anything that is reported as the wizard is behind the curtain. Nothing is unexpected and if it is...these people need their MBAs taken away from them as they clearly learned nothing about economics.

The Internal Revenue Service is demanding that Ron Paul´s Campaign for Liberty organization hand over its list of contributors, and has fined the non-profit organization $12,900 for failing to give names on its annual IRS filing. "There is no legitimate reason for the IRS to know who donates to Campaign for Liberty," the organization´s Communications Director Megan Stiles told the Washington Examiner in an e-mail April 15. Schools in Birmingham are illegally segregating pupils, discriminating against non-Muslim students and restricting the GCSE syllabus to “comply with conservative Islamic teaching”, an official report leaked to The Telegraph discloses. Department for Education inspectors said that girls in a school at the centre of the so-called “Trojan Horse” plot were forced to sit at the back of the class, some Christian pupils were left to “teach themselves” and an extremist preacher was invited to speak to children. The report, into three schools in the city, follows weeks of controversy over the alleged plot to “Islamise” secular schools in Birmingham

Louisville, Ky. — Could climate change mean paying more for your morning cup of coffee? One climate panel says "yes." According to the intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC), pests, rising heat and extreme temperatures resulting from climate change may actually impact the supply of coffee. The news has those in the coffee industry worried. "I am very concerned," said Mauricio Galindo, head of International Coffee Organization. "I would say climate change is the most serious threat to the sustainability of the coffee supply chain right now." The IPCC says that a temperature rise of just 2 to 2.5 centigrades

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

The White House is going to war with another fox — and this time, it’s personal. The Wall Street Journal reports that a red fox has been causing chaos around the White House, tripping security alarms, digging up Michelle’s garden and distracting the president from his duties. The Secret Service won’t give any details about how often the fox trips the White House’s obviously sophisticated security alarms, but rest assured, officials say, they’re watching. President Obama was apparently “stunned” to see the fox roaming freely down the oft-photographed White House colonnade, home to the world’s shortest, but most dramatic, outdoor strolls. It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

For Hillary Clinton, having her own baby grandchild to kiss on the campaign trail, could be one of the biggest boosts to her possible presidential election campaign. Although the former Secretary of State and First Lady has not said if she will run in 2016, the arrival of her first grandchild will soften her image, analysts have said. While Chelsea only revealed her pregnancy on Thursday, supporters of her mother have already started cooing over a possible baby in the White House. With the Clintons having a near-royal status in the U.S., the announcement of a new arrival due this fall has sent

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Golf holes the size of pizzas. Soccer balls on the back nine. A mulligan on every hole. These are some of the measures — some would say gimmicks — that golf courses across the country have experimented with to stop people from quitting the game. Golf has always reveled in its standards and rich tradition. But increasingly a victim of its own image and hidebound ways, golf has lost five million players in the last decade, according to the National Golf Foundation, with 20 percent of the existing 25 million golfers apt to quit in the next few years. People under 35 have especially spurned the game, saying it takes too
