DETROIT — Chrysler made the new Dodge Dart a little too European for American tastes. And the company´s CEO says that fact is holding back sales of Chrysler´s first innovative small car in years. The Dart, unveiled with much fanfare at last year´s Detroit auto show, is off to a slow start after going on sale in May. Only 25,000 were sold last year, which CEO Sergio Marchionne concedes is below his expectations. Chrysler, owned by Italy´s Fiat, had touted the sleek compact as the perfect blend of aggressive American styling and Italian technology. It was supposed Link repaired by staff.
|
Comments: In comparison Honda sold over 300,000 Civics. For one, why name a brand new car after a stodgy (although reliable) model last seen during the Carter years?

I don´t get the renaming of an old, boring line either. That said, it´s Chrysler & I don´t buy from anyone getting Zippy´s taxpayer handouts.

"aggressive American styling and Italian technology" Maybe it should have been the reverse. That´s like putting the Germans in charge of romance and the Italians in Charge of efficiancy.

There is no nostalgia because everyone thought the Darts back in the 60s and 70s were really ugly. It was the second car for the housewife who cringed when she had to drive it. Modern buyers would rather have Toyotas and Hondas. There is nothing special about the new Dart that would make anyone run out and buy one, from what I´ve seen of the new design.

My dad did tv spots for Dodge dealers in the 50´s and 60´s. The ´65 Dart cost $1599, 99 down and 99 a month. Sold like crazy. It was very basic and reliable. Very little nostalgic or sentimental value to them. Makes no sense to bring the line back. What next the Coronet, the Monaco. I´ll keep my Nissans.

Marchionne said the European transmission shifts more often and accelerates more slowly than Americans are used to. "It´s a great fuel mileage solution, but it´s got to meet consumer expectations, and were not quite there," Marchionne said.
It would be much easier to ask the Board of Directors in the administration to have DOT, DOE, EPA, of any of the czars issue a new policy that American cars be built with a transmission "that shifts like cars in Europe."

Rread a great review of this car the other day......the 1970(?) model lineup included the Dart Lite, and the ´Feather´ Duster. They got 36 mpg. The New Dart? Gets..........36 MPG. Weighs almost 1,500 pounds more, costs almost $15K more and gets EQUAL mileage.
Wondermous!! Dat´s a superba desinga!
Fix it again, Tony!!!!

#5, my uncle bought a Dodge Coronet in October 1964... it was the 1965 model. Had a 283 cu in engine, if I recall right.
We got that car from him later, circa 1983. It ran great and we passed it on in 2003, looking sharp with new upholstery and paint. We still had the original owner´s manual. Sometimes people expressed interest when they saw it.
Another uncle in the 1960´s had a red Corvair he loved. Boy did he hate Ralph Nader.
As Edith and Archie Bunker used to sing... "Gee, our old LaSalle ran great... Those were the days."

If you buy a new Dart, you´ll need a Dart Repair Kit. It´s a Toyota Tacoma truck, with the bed filled with money, that follows you around........

Those old Darts with the Slant Six engine were basically un-killable. The automotive equivalent of the cockroach, and just about as appealing.
My grandmother had a humongous 1972 Chrysler Newport that would have fit about three of those new Darts in the trunk.

LOS ANGELES -- flocking to Southern California beaches are used to feeding the meter or paying a parking attendant. Not so along the less developed north coast where it´s customary to ditch cars on the shoulder of Highway 1 to surf, swim or picnic. That sandy line that long defined the state´s disparate beach culture may soon fade. In search of new revenue, the state parks system is eyeing parking fees for parts of the Northern California shoreline where none existed or considering hiking rates to visit popular beaches south of Los Angeles during peak periods.

CAIRO — The pale, young Christian woman sat handcuffed in the courtroom, accused of insulting Islam while teaching history of religions to fourth-graders. A team of Islamist lawyers with long beards sang in unison, "All except the Prophet Muhammad." A shooting as the Warriors game let out Thursday night left two fans dead - the driver of a Porsche was killed by bullets and the passenger was killed as he staggered out onto Interstate 880 in Oakland. Now, police are turning to Warriors fans and nearby surveillance video from the O.co Coliseum for help in finding the killers. Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said Friday that the two men were leaving the arena about 10:35 p.m., when the shooting broke out. The victims identities were not released Friday, but the driver was a 30-year-old man

Palm Beach, Fla. - On a Monday morning in March, small business owner Mike Ruffer told a group at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C, how his eight Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchise restaurants in North Carolina were faring under the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. Five hours later, the backlash was so intense he had to wonder if that 15-minute speech might kill his company. In fact, Mr. Ruffer is the most recent victim in a troubling pattern of seemingly orchestrated campaigns to silence small business owners who speak out about President Obama’s agenda.

WASHINGTON - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits climbed last week at the fastest pace in six months, a worrisome sign for the economy which has been hit by government austerity. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits jumped by 32,000 to a seasonally adjusted 360,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. That was the biggest jump since November and confounded analysts´ expectations for a more modest increase. Claims for the prior week were revised to show 5,000 more applications received than previously reported. A Labor Department analyst said no states had estimated their data

WASHINGTON — Faced with a trio of controversies, President Barack Obama is trying to halt a perception spreading among both White House opponents and allies that he has been passive and disengaged as unexpected developments consume his second term. The new strategy, underscored in a flurry of new White House actions, signals an Obama team anxious to regain control amid controversies that have emboldened Republicans and threatened to plunge the president´s second term into a steady stream of congressional investigations. On Wednesday, Obama released a trove of documents related to the Benghazi attacks amid revived pressure from Republicans.

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. It began in earnest last Friday. A flash mob of latte drinking, tofu eating media that has done its best to quell, rather than fan the flames of truth, turned on one of their own. Jay Carney lay bludgeoned at the base of the podium, a victim of friendly fire. Ironically, the attack was reminiscent of the one in Benghazi he has repeatedly denied the Administration he represents bears any responsibility for. “Changed twelve times?!” came the cries. And with good reason. We were misled; no, lied to.

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
