| If the government fails to enact structural reforms in spending, an entirely new source of revenue will be needed. The most likely one is a value-added tax that would crush the middle class. You can´t blame middle-income Americans for wondering whether the new "fiscal cliff" deal really protects them from big tax increases in the future. That´s essentially what President Obama promised in championing the hike in rates for high-earners signed into law on January 2. Still, the politicians and pundits keep talking about how our steep deficits and mountainous debt will rise

Comments: Outrageous!! The VAT wouldn´t be "inevitable" if the criminals in Washington would stop spending!!

Glad I´m old and have all my "stuff" already bought. The biggest losers in a VAT tax are the same ones who would lose in any other type of national sales tax. The young, and dumb, Zerobama voters.
They are the ones whose major purchases, furniture, appliances, cars, etc. are still ahead of them, at additional cost of 20% or more, I might add. You asked for it and now you may well get it.
It will hurt us older folks, too, but not nearly as much. Can´t stop laughing!

"What? Now there´s a this new tax AND we still have income taxes to pay?"

I´m less worried about adopting a VAT than about adding such a tax to the existing tax structure, which is what Washington (esp. the Democrats) are certain to attempt to do.

#2, the problem is that the VAT is an invisible tax, which even high-information voters will not be able to track easily.

We already have a VAT tax. Yep! Invisible it is. It´s the corporate income tax. Corporations include the tax in the price of their products and this happens at all levels of the supply chain. Ergo, a VAT.
Remember, corporations don´t pay taxes, they collect them from customers.

Wow! Who in a thousand years would have guessed that spending has consequences? The big questions is will they increase the value of welfare payouts and food stamps so the recipients can still buy their usual amount of booze, smokes, slap dances and gambling without any decrease in the current consumption?

Anyone that has not seen this coming hasn´t been paying attention.
That would be over half of this dumbed down nation.
Obama has spent so wildly, that now a VAT tax is now the only solution.
His plan from the start.
By the time he´s gone this once great country will be CEMENTED IN SUB-PAR MEDIOCRITY FOREVER.
Again, his plan.

With a VAT, the federal government is creating something that acts like a sales tax. We already have sales taxes as high as 10%$ in some localities.

As the defendant said to the judge asking him why he robbed banks - "Because thats where the money is". No matter how much they talk about getting the filthy rich "to pay their fair share", the ´Rats know that ultimately they have to go for the middle class - because that is where the money is. Its simple income transfer from those who earned it to those who did not. The rest is all smoke and mirrors.

And don´t forget the Streamlined Sales Tax (Wikipedia and search the term for the SST site) which will require online vendors in one State to collect sales tax for the purchaser´s State. The National Governors Association has been hot to get this through for over a decade. The software has long since been there, with its developers drooling.
So we may get clobbered with State and VAT US National taxes all at once. Put a little slavery in your life.

VAT would most likely be in addition to state & local sales taxes. If in place of, states and cities would be harmed, meaning higher income & property taxes. If, as most likely, in addition to, a VAT would make us still poorer as prices rise by 5% to 15% to cover cost of VAT while wages are frozen to falling.

The costs to us would be astronomical! Loggers cut logs, which are then taxed. They go to the mill and are cut into lumber, which is taxed again..lumber goes to the pencil factory, and the pencils made are then taxed, then the pencils are sold and are again taxed.. You get the message. Every step of production is taxed.

Wasn´t the idea of a VAT floated when PIAPS was the duo-POTUS? Also she had the idea of taxing homeowners on the income they make by renting their homes to themselves. Not sure of how the gov´t would determine the fair marked value....

Our 23 year old daughter lives and works in Canada, and is a big government liberal. But when she comes home on a visit, she does lots of shopping, noting that cosmetics and such cost about 1/2 of what she would pay in toronto. (I tried to see if she could connect canadian tax rates with product cost, and she can, but shrugs it off.) So we see canadian buses full of shoppers, at the Millcreek Mall near Erie,Pa. They don´t stop in Buffalo, NY, because the sales tax on almost everyting is close to 10%, but the sales tax in Pennsylvania is not applied to clothing...

Part of the liberal Democrats political taxing game is to always claim that they want to tax the rich to keep middle class taxes low. But there are not enough rich people out there to finance all the liberal Democrats social welfare programs, s after bumping up the taxes on the rich a few points, the liberal Democrats always end up raising up the taxes of the middle class, that game is played about every 20 years using the new generation of unassuming voters as bait.

From the Obama point of view, the beauty of the VAT is that it will entice low-information voters to blame the merchants and manufacturers - basically, the private sector - for the inevitable price hikes while the government skims all it likes off the top and escapes blame.
You can see the dynamic already in the way car drivers blame gas stations when oil prices go up. The VAT will be the same thing.

I have been expecting a VAT for awhile. We have been replacing big items such as refrigerators, etc. so if it happens we can go for some years without big expenditures. When Carter was president, I spent. When Reagan was president, I saved. Now that Obama is president I am spending again before the money loses all value.

In 2007, then Senator Barack Obama appeared on CNN´s Larry King Live and called on U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign. Obama said Gonzales was acting more like the president´s attorney than the people´s attorney and viewed himself as an "enabler of the administration." "Well, I voted against Alberto Gonzales confirmation for precisely the reason we are seeing now. I said this on the floor of the senate, that although he seemed to be a capable attorney, he seemed to conceive his role as being the president´s attorney instead of being the people´s attorney," Obama said.

Why didn´t Chairman Camp, all Republicans, hold an investigative hearing a year ago, and all the other tripping over themselves right now? I´ll tell you why. Because the establishment Republicans, the RINO Republicans, despise the Tea Party. They despise the conservative movement. House Speaker John A. Boehner on Thursday flatly ruled out chances of the House passing the Senate’s immigration bill, saying his chamber will debate its own bill instead. The Ohio Republican and his top lieutenants in the party issued a joint statement that seemed designed to tamp down some of the momentum behind the Senate bill, which emerged from a committee on a bipartisan 13-5 vote this week, and to stake out a House GOP position. “While we applaud the progress made by our Senate colleagues, there are numerous ways in which

During friendly questioning from Rep. Hank “I fear that Guam will capsize!” Johnson in Congress last week, Attorney General Eric Holder offered the following statement. In regard to potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure of material. This is not something I’ve ever been involved in, heard of, or would think would be wise policy. He made that statement before the facts about the sweep on Fox News’ James Rosen were known. Since then, it’s come to light that Holder himself approved the subpoena that, among other things, named Rosen as a criminal co-conspirator.

As the saying goes, scratch a liberal and you’ll find a tyrant underneath. NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo is but the latest example. He shoved a very restrictive and ill-considered gun law through the state legislature in the dead of night. Among its flaws, the law criminalized police officers who tote firearms with magazines that hold more than seven rounds. Sheriffs around the state have objected to the law. Cuomo summoned them to the state capitol under what appears to be a false pretext, and used the meeting to threaten them into silence. Cuomo invited

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”
