I just finished "Detroit City is the Place to Be". It´s about the ones who haven´t left or the ones who have returned. There is a there there, but no one is very optimistic about the city´s future. There are many to blame for Detroit´s almost fatal collapse. It´s sad and I feel great sympathy for those who are trying to just keep things alive while solutions are experimented with.

I´m going out on a limb here, but I believe that you could see either GM or Ford moving to Texas. The driving force would be access to low cost energy and the resulting new metals, plastics, and chemicals facilities being built in TX. All of this in turn is driven by the extremely favorable business climate. You could even choose a port for low cost shipping to either coast and to export markets around the Gulf of Mexico. The major profit centers for the US auto makers are trucks and there is no larger state market than TX. In the heyday of the auto industry, cotton picker and farm worker moved to Detroit. Detroit messed up big time and its now time to move to TX.

I find Detroit to be a totally fascinating place. Fabulous old architecture, great old neighborhoods...in times gone by. Very, very sad.

Not everyone benefited by the bailout and all Delphi workers lost their jobs as well as white collar workers. GM still owes the taxpayers over 50 billion dollars that isn´t being paid but they gave huge bonuses at Christmas time.
The unions have cost more jobs than they have helped and as far as I know have created none.

#4 - if they DO come to Texas they had sure better drop any union affiliations and any ideas about making Texas like what they left behind...I doubt they will do much to come to my state though. We´re a Right To Work state and have enough Yankees as it is without bringing a failed car manufacture company into the mix. Its bad enough that we have a Californication attitude infecting our current culture - we dont need Northern Midwest unionism.

I live in TX too #8. My thought initially was Ford, but it applies to GM as well. Where better to rebuild? No state income tax, right-to-work, low cost energy, close to suppliers, loser-pays liability, flexible permitting on environmental, low cost energy, fabulous port and transportation network, educated work force, close to population center of nation, the list is endless. They might even get a deal on NASA facilities. What better way to signal your resolve to UAW?

#4 and #8 - Michigan is a right to work state too. That just passed here. The Big 3 own a lot of real estate in the Detroit area. A move to Texas would be very very expensive.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says it wants as many as 20 percent of its workers to "telework," use an "alternative work schedule," or do both, in order to "reduce green house gas emissions," decrease "employee stress," and give these government workers more time for "planning and preparing healthy meals." So says one of the HHS "performance measures" detailed in an appendix to the department´s latest strategic plan. HHS´s performance measure "4.D.05" says: "Increase the percent employees on telework or on Alternative Work Schedule." Telework means working from home via phone and computer.

WASHINGTON - There were new questions Saturday night concerning if anyone in the White House was aware of the IRS´ targeting of conservative groups. Inspector General Russell George said he informed a deputy at the Treasury Department in June of 2012 about the probe into the IRS. The Treasury Department confirmed the timeline but said they did not know the details of the investigation until last week.(Snip)Marcus Owens ran the tax-exempt division at the IRS for 10 years. He said it isn´t difficult to figure out who´s doing what at the agency.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate."
