| Now that Americans finally know the tax rate they´ll be paying, it´s time to start thinking about the annual drudgery of filing their returns. It´s also the season when identity thieves begin ripping off those returns and stealing billions in false or misdirected refunds. Tax fraud, amazingly, is now the third-largest theft of federal funds after Medicare/Medicaid and unemployment-insurance fraud. Tax-identity theft exploded to more than 1.1 million cases in 2011 from 51,700 in 2008. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration last summer reported discovering an additional 1.5 million potentially fraudulent 2011 tax refunds totaling in excess of $5.2 billion.

A good read - take the time.
As my friend in the tax prep business always says, Use a good national company, like the one with the green square.
Unfortunately, the scammers are at work 24/7

Spent a few weeks working at the IRS office nearby last year ... grunt work, opening envelopes and doing initial sorts on paper returns.
They had a little meeting talking about the fraud issues, many coming from foreign returns and those coming from South Florida and Puerto Rico (the latter get extra coverage).
Another big fraud area is in the area of the ETIN, although it wasn´t said in these terms what I remember was those undocumented workers would (1) file to get any tax withheld paid back and (2) take the ETIN (Earned Income Tax Credit).
Evidentally, our esteemed legislators wrote the law allowing us to pay the filer for dependents even if those dependents do not live in the United States (and of course, don´t have any SSN or identification). It´s a loophole that allows some of these folks to claim a dozen or more dependents and collect large refunds.

Why should we care? I´m surprised the Administration doesn´t allow Mexican nationals to file directly and have they child care credits and deductions sent directly to Mexico. /s

I just don´t want anyone to borrow my SSN and file a phoney tax retrun in my name. But then again, I have an Identity Theft service that will take care of it if it should happen.

Baby mamas pack the tax prep offices on Feb. 1st. to cash in on the earned tax scam money. If you don´t pays in, you don´t get. You owe Uncle Sam, no refund. Period.

I can´t for the life of me understand the mind set of people who would cheat on their income tax. I have always instructed my CPA to err on the side of the gov´t because I am so afraid of the gov´t. My spouse had a legitimate home office for 22 years, and we never ever claimed it. I just don´t want to mess with it.

Refund threat is a HUGE problem and the IRS has been sending out notices to preparers about this for a while. They may need to make some improvements with how refunds are issued but they will.
Identity theft protection services have no mechanism for preventing this; they´re not affiliated with the IRS. They can keep someone from taking out loans and/or credit cards in your name but not from submitting a tax return in your name.
Guard your anything with your social security number on it and submit your tax return early. Also, it´s safest to do your own return (maybe using a software package) or to use the IRS´s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), which is a free, safe tax return prep service available at many libraries.
Take comfort in the fact that the feds give out LONG prison sentences. Refund theft has their attention and electronic stuff leaves trails that are easy to follow.

There’s a huge red flag in the Benghazi mess, but conservatives are letting the media get away with using a red herring to avoid it. Give the establishment media credit for obstinacy: Once it settles on a standard narrative or explanation for a particular subject, it shows remarkable discipline in explaining away any evidence that contradicts its own approved spin. So it has been with the media’s 250-day old determination to downplay the scandalous nature of the Obama administration’s treatment of its outpost in Benghazi before, during, and after the terrorist attack there that took four American lives.

Lawmakers across the country are tussling over the Obama administration´s plans to create a small army of assistants to guide millions of Americans as they sign up for new health-insurance options available this fall. Backers of the health-care overhaul face an uphill battle to spread the word about the law, in the face of consumer research that suggests most uninsured people know little about it and are skeptical about the value of health insurance generally. Some Democrats have openly worried that the administration is doing too little to make sure the enrollment process goes smoothly. That is where the "patient navigators"

Labor unions are breaking with President Obama on ObamaCare. Months after the president’s reelection, a variety of unions are publicly balking at how the administration plans to implement the landmark law. They warn that unless there are changes, the results could be catastrophic. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) — a 1.3 million-member labor group that twice endorsed Obama for president — is very worried about how the reform law will affect its members’ healthcare plans. Last month, the president of the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers released a statement calling “for repeal

Since Hillary Clinton last came up to Capitol Hill, we’ve learned senior State Department officials sought to scrub references to terrorism from the infamous Benghazi talking points to insulate Foggy Bottom from political criticism — citing concerns of their “building’s leadership” to justify the demands. The rising temperature of the scandal means it’s possible that Hillary could be asked to return and testify again. If she comes back, she had better be prepared, says House Oversight and Government Reform chairman Darrell Issa. “We are interviewing lots of people, most of them under oath,” Issa says, describing the “methodical” approach his committee

We hear a lot, these days, about how President Obama is not like Lyndon Johnson and thanks be to heaven for that small mercy. The point seems to be that the president doesn´t know how to arm twist, sweet talk, bribe, and emasculate both friend and enemy (of which he truly had neither) in order to further his agenda. Since many among the chattering class believe, still, in that agenda, his is generally regarded as an excellent presidency. Never mind that more than half a century after Johnson declared war on poverty ...

First they came for Fox News, and they did not speak out – because they were not Fox News. Then they came for government whistleblowers, and they did not speak out – because they were not government whistleblowers. Then they came for the maker of a You Tube video, and – okay, we know how this story ends. But how did we get here?Turns out, it’s a fairly swift sojourn from a president pushing to “delegitimize” a news organization, to threatening criminal prosecution for journalistic activity by a Fox News reporter, James Rosen,

More whistleblowers will emerge shortly in the escalating Benghazi scandal, according to two former U.S. diplomats who spoke with PJ Media Monday afternoon. These whistleblowers, colleagues of the former diplomats, are currently securing legal counsel because they work in areas not fully protected by the Whistleblower law. According to the diplomats, what these whistleblowers will say will be at least as explosive as what we have already learned about the scandal, including details about what really transpired in Benghazi that are potentially devastating to both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

What did President Obama do on the evening of 9/11/12 when our men were under attack in Benghazi? The invaluable Andrew McCarthy reminds us that Obama and Secretary Clinton had a 10:00 p.m. phone call of which many (including, I think, Chris Wallace) have lost sight. This morning when Wallace asked Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer what Obama was up to that evening, Pfeiffer declared the line of inquiry “offensive.” Translation: Obama and his minions would prefer to “move on” and are warning the likes of FNC off:(Snip for video)The Weekly Standard’s Daniel Halper has posted the rush transcript

PRESIDENT OBAMA: You are the mantle of Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington and Ralph Bunche and Langston Hughes and George Washington Carver and Ralph Abernathy and Thurgood Marshall and, yes, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. These men were many things to many people and they knew full well the role that racism played in their life. WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Serviced scandal today spread further within the White House and closer to President Obama. White House spokesman Jay Carney today disclosed that Obama’s chief of staff, Dennis McDonough, and other top White House officials had advance warning that the IRS was targeting conservative groups. But he insisted McDonough and the other White House officials purposely kept Obama out of the loop.McDonough “rightly chose not to take action” to inform Obama, Carney told reporters at the daily White House briefing.

The Washington Post on Monday reported that Obama’s Department of Justice was investigating journalists before they started wiretapping the Associated Press – for one, Fox News correspondent James Rosen in 2010. Their headline wasn´t "Obama Team Also Spied on Fox News." Fox wasn´t in the headline, on A-1 or on A-12, where the story continued. Newly obtained court documents “reveal how deeply investigators explored the private communications of a working journalist — and raise the question of how often journalists have been investigated as closely as Rosen was in 2010.” Reporter Ann Marimow began:

"Can you see in your mind´s eye a way that this might not have been political, that this was a misguided stupid way to sort, but that they didn´t intend it to be some kind of political attempt to harass the Tea Party?" So actually asked CNN´s Candy Crowley of her guest Sen. A senior adviser to President Obama mounted a combative defense of the administration on Sunday, saying the controversies enveloping the White House were the result of Republican lawmakers’ trying to “drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations.”The remarks came from Dan Pfeiffer, a member of the president’s inner circle, as he appeared on all five major Sunday morning talk shows in an effort to move the administration past what commentators have described as a “hell week” of controversy and missteps.

Stuart Varney said this morning on "Varney & Co." that one of his producers was given a questionnaire with some surprisingly intrusive questions on it when he switched doctors. One of the questions was whether he/she was concerned about unsecured weapons in the home. Another asked whether he/she was "in a relationship in which you have been physically hurt or are you afraid of your partner?" Judge Andrew Napolitano explained that the question about guns comes out of a post-Sandy Hook executive order by President Obama, but it will be required under Obamacare. Varney expressed amazement
