| What is a powerful public union to do when it looks like a city´s busted balance sheet is finally forcing some fiscal reform? Naturally, buy a house next door to the city manager´s and launch an intimidation campaign aimed at getting him to avoid any real fixes. At least that´s what the police union of Stockton, Calif., did in 2011—with great success. The police union claimed that the home purchase was meant to diversify its "investments." But at the time, Stockton City Manager Bob Deis was asking the union to come to the table and renegotiate benefits that were contributing

Not sure that any rise in violent crime is a result in cuts in police budget.
All the recent mass shootings in the news had plenty of cops around, just not at the scene of the crime. Until it was over. Makes you kind of wonder if cops actually avoid the dangerous parts of the job. With the ultra-fat pensions just over the horizon, would be human nature.

Recent shooting at the school in Connecticut, took cops 20 minutes to travel 2 miles to the school. NOBODY can convince me otherwise that they wanted primarily to protect THEMSELVES.

Believe that´s procedure #2. Don´t rush into a situation you don´t understand.
Recently looked at firefighting, and that´s #1. Don´t endanger yourself.

I too have heard that it took 20 minutes for the first officer to arrive at Sandy Hook. I hope that isn´t true. In fact, some rural areas may have response times like that. From what I have heard and read, it should not have been so in this case.
I can tell you that I and my fellow officers are trained and fully prepared to immediately enter the building, run towards the gunfire, and stop the assassin. PERIOD. We are aware that our survival chances are greater if we wait on backup and tactical units, but that strategy ended at Columbine. We won´t wait because doing so would add to the body count.

"Can no longer assure your safety". Are they kidding? What does everyone think this current battle over the second Amendemnt is about? It´s also about an individual´s right to defend themselves in light of a Supreme Court ruling stating that police have no obligation to protect citizens. They are simply to followup AFTER the law has been broken. I was in "Public Safety" for 29 years and if you think 911 is going to save your butt, I´d like to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge. Get real people and pull your heads out of the sand.

On Wednesday, President Obama fired the head of the Internal Revenue Service, the first sacrificial lamb brought down after the alleged “targeting” of conservative political groups by the IRS. Obama declared, “Americans are right to be angry about it.” Call me out of step, but I am angrier that the president is joining the rush to judgment. All that is known for sure is that some IRS functionaries took a shorthand route to identify partisan political groups that might be pretending not to be political so that they could get the tax-exempt status available to social welfare organizations.

Saturday´s dispute between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia just got a little more interesting, with a marshal at the Players Championship on Monday basically calling Woods a liar. On Saturday, Woods hit his tee shot into the trees on the par-five second hole while his playing partner, Garcia, hit his tee shot onto the fairway. As Garcia was on the backswing of his second shot, Woods pulled a fairway driver from his bag, causing the crowd to react with a gasp (Snip)afterward, Woods said, "Obviously, he doesn´t know all the facts. Triple kidnapping suspect Ariel Castro became a bus driver because he liked schoolkids. “I enjoy working with children,” the accused Cleveland predator wrote on a job application before he was hired in February 1991. “I plan to drive a bus, and working (sic) with young people.” Two of the women who escaped from his home this week disappeared when they were ages 14 and 16, although there was no sign in Castro’s personnel file of any sexual misconduct with his passengers.

The daughter of Ariel Castro, the main suspect in the kidnapping and decade-long imprisonment of three Cleveland women, is serving 25 years in jail for slashing her baby daughter´s throat. Emily Castro, who suffered from mental illness, was convicted in Indiana in February 2008 of trying to kill her 11-month-old daughter Janyla, according to an Indiana newspaper and court reports. Castro, then 19, slashed the little girl´s neck four times and then sliced herself in the neck and wrists during a grisly attack at her Fort Wayne home in April 2007, a court document said.

Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx, who President Barack Obama tapped Tuesday to be the next transportation secretary, just declared Thursday "A Day of Reason" in his home city, and asked Charlotte´s citizens to observe the day. May 2 is traditionally the National Day of Prayer, a government-designated religious event designed to encourage people to "turn to God in prayer and meditation. But Foxx argued in his proclamation May 2 was better served as A Day of Reason because "the application of reason, more than any other means, has proven to offer hope for human survival on Earth."

WHEW! That is the word of the day for many surrounding the ball drop controversy involving Tiger Woods at The Masters. Though Mr. Woods will be assessed an additional 2-shot penalty for improperly (and apparently unknowingly) dropping his ball after an unfortunate break on the par-5 15th during Friday’s round, it still only leaves him just 5 shots behind current leader Jason Day…well within striking distance with 36 holes to play. But the bigger winners here clearly are CBS and principal broadcast advertiser IBM.

Earnest was responding to a reporter who asked whether President Obama feels his stance on gay marriage has “cleared the way” for others to support it publicly, noting Sen. One of two men allegedly being questioned in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings was shot and killed by an FBI agent in Florida on Tuesday, (Snip)A friend of Ibragim Todashev said he and Todashev were being investigated as part of the Boston bombings. He said Todashev, 27, knew bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev because both were MMA fighters. The man claims he and Todashev were interviewed by the FBI for nearly three hours on Tuesday. The friend said he left the interview, and when he came back to the apartment he found that there had been a shooting.

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
