As more move to the city,
does rural America still matter?

Gannett Newspapers, by Christopher Doering

Original Article

WASHINGTON — When the top cheerleader for rural America has some harsh words for the people he represents, it might be time to take notice. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack delivered a dire warning to the 51 million farmers, ranchers and other residents inhabiting rural America before a farm group in Washington last month. His message: Rural Americans are becoming less relevant in the country´s increasingly urban landscape and unless they find a way to reverse the trend their voice will continue to fall on deaf ears in Washington and around the world.

Comments:
The words would bear hearing if we didn´t already know what a dunce Vilsack is.

How does your cell phone taste?

Not a lot of food is produced in the urban areas.

Stop growing food for a year and see if you still matter to urbanites.

The growth in urban areas is due to the government paying women to have illegitimate kids.It has nothing to do with what goes on outside those boundaries. Urban America has little or no self funding apparatus, outside of corporate skyscrapers and corner restaurants, so they keep robbing suburbanites to finance their worry free lifestyles.
Food supplies are already under threat from the ethanol obsession and gov´t subsidies which make that farming more lucrative than produce industry.

Rural birthrates are down because most of those people have to pay for their own kids.
The urban growth rates have been boosted by illegal aliens not the usual suspects living in the city whose rates are flat lined.

UN Agenda 21---forced urbanization to save the sustainability of the planet. A worldwide plan to move the masses into the cities and then expand housing vertically instead of horizontally. George HW Bush signed America up for this so-called " new world order" and every President since then has taken steps to achieve the UN goal. It´s all there on the UN website.

If you want to have some fun, ask liberals to explain where food in the grocery store comes from. Believe it or not, most of them don´t have a clue about food processing. If it ever hits the fan, the cities will be emptied by people out looking for food. Until they run into the guns that is.

You know what? Living in rural America is harsh. Snowstorms, tornadoes, and electrical outages are common. And, it´s very expensive. There are few apartment complexes which wrap together many utilities and services into your rent. There´s no gov´t. subsidized transportation.

Farmers demand low property taxes, meaning there´s usually substandard schools, teachers, administrators, cops, roads, parks, etc. They block every new public good proposed. Good doctors and lawyers don´t want to live there, as the low pay creates an unacceptably low return-on-investment. Firemen and EMTs are partially-trained volunteers.

A high concentration of religious people who actually walk-the-walk expect their neighbors to behave with good morals, and provide the public shame upon those who don´t in big heaping helpings. There´s no work, welfare support is discouraged, many people live far below the poverty levels of their urban counterparts.

If you´re not a farmer, there are few cultural events or the arts, outside of county fairs and tractor pulls. The landscape is dull, unless you enjoy looking at the ugly, useless wind farms. No mountains, no beaches, few lakes.

Yes, it´s true, farmers are the salt of the Earth and we all need to eat. But, let´s not kid ourselves. Rural living is no picnic. Even the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas had cities. There must be something humans like about them.

* Disclaimer: I live in a rural area.

We don´t need farmers any more. We get our groceries at the supermarket...

Different people, different tastes, #8, but I cannot imagine living in an apartment or a densely populated neighborhood. Give me Texas´s wide open spaces. I can count the stars at night, I can smell clean air. I can put up with an occasional power outage.

Reply 12 - Posted by: Pinchem, 1/13/2013 9:34:14 AM     (No. 9113870)

#8...IU don´t know where you live but it isn´t like that in this part of the farm country. No, it isn´t utopia but not as bad as you painted. Schools here are fine, they TEACH subjects, once a year they put on a program to HONOR all Veterans and they sing and recite patriotic songs and writings such as the Pledge.

We have some of the finest Doctors here including many specialist. They just opened a new Surgical Trama center.

Disclaimer: Population for the whole county with one town is 25,000.

What he is saying vote democrat like farmers used to do. The supermarkets in those urban areas that vote democrat would run out of food in three days and the gangs will take what little is left. Those same urbanites who love Obama and I routinely see threatening Red State America have NO clue how vulnerable they are on the Survival ladder of life, no guns, dependent on Red State for Food, Energy, Mining and all the other natural resources, and many military veterans. The south was overcome by Northern Population and Industrial base, that is not true today. Obama is trying to goad us into something and he ain´t even been Inaugurated yet.

I am not sure where #8 lives but in my slice of heaven, waaaaaaay out in the middle of no where. The stars shine bright, taking a big deep breath of fresh air. Power outages? Generator or better yet just go off grid and do your own. Neighbors are neighborly and our volunteer fire dept is first rate trained by the Texas A&M Fire School..paid for by those of us here in the county who use their services. And yes rural America does matter because we are the ones who value and believe in the freedom , liberty and Constitution. We aren´t easy brainwashed and packed into the cities like cattle in a rail car. We will fight for what we believe in and yes we do cling to our bibles and our guns. We say yes sir and no sir, yes ma´am and no ma´am and mean it sincerely. We say grace, we know the Pledge by heart and know to put our hand over our heart when saying it. We are America, it´s foundation, it´s very heart. And this rancher doesn´t take anything from the federal govt except the crap it shoves at us. No hand outs, no subsidies...you will find most of that goes to big farm, big food and big pockets in Congress.

Reply 15 - Posted by: coldoc, 1/13/2013 2:39:39 PM     (No. 9114443)

I think #8 needs to move. I wouldn´t live in a city if you payed me. We have better access to health care, better (less congested) roads, less crime, and a hell of a lot more guns. #14 s right. The very people with their grubby little hands out voting for their messiah will be the first to experience anarchy, hunger, and death if worst comes to worst.

Vilsack is pushing Agenda 21 where there is a mandate to push all citizens into cities, which are dens of corruption and free-wheeling murders.

Security along the U.S. border with Mexico is perhaps the key factor in the debate over comprehensive immigration reform. Those who believe the border is mostly secure already are more inclined to support the plan of the bipartisan Gang of Eight in the Senate -- legalization first, followed by enhanced security. Those who believe the border is still far from secure are more likely to oppose the Gang of Eight´s approach, insisting that heightened security measures be in place before the nation´s estimated 11 million illegal immigrants are legalized. Now, a new report from the Council on Foreign Relations

There was a running joke in the fall of 2008 that John McCain should simply re-air Hillary Clinton’s “3 a.m. phone call” ad, which highlighted Barack Obama’s lack of experience and meager knowledge of world affairs, and just tack on “I’m John McCain, and I approve this message” at the end of the ad. The point was that thanks to the bitter primary battle between the Clintons and Obama, Democrats had already developed the most effective lines of attack against Obama, and Republicans needed only to nod their heads in agreement. Something similar is taking place

Obama administration officials who were in key positions on Sept. 11, 2012, acknowledge that a range of mistakes were made the night of the attacks on the U.S. missions in Benghazi, and in messaging to Congress and the public in the aftermath. The officials spoke to CBS News in a series of interviews and communications under the condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments. They do not all agree on the list of mistakes and it's important to note that they universally claim that any errors or missteps did not cost lives and reflect "incompetence rather than malice or cover up.

Watching President Obama trying to dodge raindrops and responsibility yesterday reminded me of the moment when Dorothy pulls back the curtain and discovers that the Wizard of Oz is “just a man.” Stripped of his spell of mystery and power, the wizard is worse than mortal. He’s a fake. So it was with Obama in the Rose Garden. His performance was tired and trite, ordinary to the point of dull. His veneer of passion was so transparent that you could see him trying to summon his old-time magic by pushing the buttons

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Friday urged congressional leaders to raise the debt limit and insisted that the White House is not going to negotiate over the increase because lawmakers have "no choice." "We will not negotiate over the debt limit," Lew wrote. "The creditworthiness of the United States is non-negotiable. The question of whether the country must pay obligations it has already incurred is not open to debate." Lew said that while President Obama is willing to discuss plans to reduce the nation´s deficit with Congress, those talks must be kept separate from any effort to raise the nation´s debt cap.
