Waxman urges attention to
mental health in gun debate

The Hill [Washington, DC], by Elise Viebeck

Original Article

A leading House Democrat urged Vice President Biden Friday not to ignore mental health issues as his panel grapples with U.S. gun violence. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the Energy and Commerce Committee, wrote to Biden recommending better gun-safety standards, more research applying a public-health perspective to gun violence and greater mental health coverage for people in the United States. "Experts agree: the prevalence of guns and gun violence in our society is not just a criminal justice problem; it is also a public health and safety problem,"

Comments:
Since Waxman is such an authority on mental health. s/o Of course his solution is more funding for public health agencies. We know how well that will work out. Democrats sure love to spend money we don´t have. The loons on the left are the ones who closed mental hospitals and let them run free. More fine work from the ACLU.

The left has wanted to spend more on metal health for a long time,so they´ll use this as a wedge to get it.

I think a person´s metal health should be taken into consideration but you´ll never come up with a way to bypass the ACLU protecting medical privacy, which I also support.

That´s why I´ve said a new gun applicant should have 3 other adults vouch for him. The people around somebody knows them the best.

When someone like Waxman calls for more spending,he sees it as a hiring opportunity for more support bureaucrats compiling records or whatever.

There is an excellent Wall Street Journal on the mental health issue in Friday´s edition. Unfortunately, it is still behind a subscriber wall. But the gist is that we don´t have to spend money; we can change the privacy laws to permit mental health professionals to get input from family members as well as make it easier for family members to get a person in for an evaluation. By forcing people to wait until a crisis develops, we end up with more crisis situations, more homicides, more suicides.

Yes - - I completely agree.

It´s about time someone paid attention to Waxman´s mental heath.

When the Democrats start coming around to the real issue it only demonstrates that the issue is so obvious they just can´t ignore it. But as soon as they push that issue to the back they will go back to concentrating on their real agenda.

"as his panel grapples with U.S. gun violence"

The trick, of course, is only to grapple with "gun violence". If they were to expand the scope of the inquiry to include all violent crimes, they´d have to start talking about baseball bats, and hammers, and knives.

So long as the topic is limited to "gun violence", the answer is going to have to be dealing with guns. In places where there are no guns, there is no gun crime. People may be afraid to walk the streets due to the threat of rape, robbery, and murder (e.g. many British cities), but if there are no guns, then by definition there is no "gun crime". Problem solved.

Left wing Liberals´ mental health has certainly been a serious problem for some time. Addiction to OPM (Other People´s Money) makes it even more dangerous.

Let´s start first with the mental "states" of Bow-Hussain-Boy, Waxman, Pee-Low-See, Reid, Lew, Feinstein, Bloomburg and the rest of our resident communist/socialist, mind-challenged scum running this country over the cliff.

Waxman, more than anybody I know, should be concerned about mental health. Maybe looking really weird does effect your psyche.

It has been long known that more money does not cure any malady and mental problems included. There has been a 5 decade argument about those who clearly are mental menaces to the public of needing to be institutionalized. There are many instances when a person with a severe mental problem and walks in the public arena and the didn´ take his/her Meds that day becaome a threat to the inocent public. The reason they are on the street is because goverments at all levels do not want to foot the bill of supporting those types of "hospitals".

What will they say when they find out that 99.9% of Congress members are mentally unstable and can´t own a gun?

Nostrilitis has been driving people crazy with his batcave probiscis exposed in
the news for longer than we can remember.

Mebbe we all could be compensated by means of a class action suit for having to look
at his weird buttface this much.

He should attend hearings with a bag over his head.
It would probably improve his image.
Couldn´t hurt it any, that´s for sure.

If they add a mental health qualifier in order to get a gun license, there will be no liberals with gun licenses.

Gee # 12 at last a post with thought instead of a string of personal insults aimed at Waxman.
The man is a crook and all kinds of other things BUT he is right on this subject.
He is probably out in the sinning cities enough to know the won will have a hell of a reaction from the black street gangs if Guns are banned than from other citizens.
Obe couldn´t deal with or fix a series of riots from those factions.

A bipartisan group of House members introduced legislation on Wednesday to protect journalists from government snooping. “Freedom of the press is a foundational freedom upon which all of our other freedoms and liberties are based and protected,” said Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). The Free Flow of Information Act, H.R. 1962, would protect reporters by preventing the government from compelling the disclosure of their source material, except under certain exceptions that must go through judicial review. Those exceptions include cases where it is necessary to prevent an act of terrorism, imminent death, or other harm to national security.

Under President Obama, "justice" is anything but blind. Neither is it deaf. In fact, based on recent revelations, it appears to be watching your every move and listening to your every word. Still, if you happen to be a federal employee, now it´s even listening for your silence. The only thing this Obama White House seems to generate is scandal. Well, here´s yet another to add to the growing list. In addition to the Benghazi cover-up, IRS targeting of political dissenters and the illegal seizure of media phone records, whistleblowers within DOJ have contacted Liberty Counsel

WASHINGTON — The Tea Party wants former Alaska governor Sarah Palin to join their favorites in the Senate, Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.). They say she can win and they have a poll to prove it. Yikes, is America ready for a Senator Palin? The Tea Party Leadership Fun commissioned a Harper Poll that shows Sarah Palin leads the Republican field in Alaska for the upcoming Senate seat. It is only by 2 points (32 to 30%), but that is without her even saying she is interested. Not that Democrat Sen. Mark Begich is planning

WASHINGTON - Republican Representative Darrell Issa said on Thursday he will call Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner back to testify before his committee on the IRS-Tea Party scandal after she asserted her constitutional right not to answer questions. "She clearly chose to make her statements and then not open herself up to even any questioning as to the statement she made," said Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The growing IRS-Tea Party scandal, which has robbed Democrats of the so-called "trust edge" they held over Republicans, is now jeopardizing the Democratic majority in the Senate and even hopes that Hillary Clinton will replace President Obama in 2016. "This hurts the Democratic Party and will hurt anybody who runs for president in 2016," said former Clinton White House counsel Lanny Davis, a major supporter of Hillary Clinton. Speaking on national radio´s Andrea Tantaros Show, he added that if the the White House had prior knowledge of the IRS scandal,

Former Rep. The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

WASHINGTON – A top IRS official in the division that reviews nonprofit groups will invoke the Fifth Amendment and refuse to answer questions before a House committee investigating the agency’s improper screening of conservative nonprofit groups. Lois Lerner, the head of the exempt organizations division of the IRS, won’t answer questions about what she knew about the improper screening – or why she didn’t reveal it to Congress, according to a letter from her defense lawyer, William W. Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa said embattled IRS official Lois Lerner waived her Fifth Amendment rights and will be hauled back to appear before his panel again. The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”
