Americans feel austerity´s
bite as payroll taxes rise

WASHINGTON - Americans are beginning to feel the pinch from Washington´s decision to embrace austerity measures aimed at bringing down the nation´s budget deficit. Paychecks across the country have shrunk over the last week due to higher federal tax rates, and workers are already cutting back on spending, which will drag on the economy this year. In Warren, Rhode Island, Ben DeCastro got his first paycheck on Friday in which taxes on his wages rose by 2 percentage points. That works out to about $30 a week. "You sit back and do the calculation, and that´s $30

Duh - Now you worry that higher taxes takes away from economic growth. Just wait until the Obamacare taxes sink their teeth into the pocketbooks of the Middle Class.

Austerity is not reflected by increased taxes; austerity means decreased soending.

Austerity means cutting government services for the lazy, not increased taxes.

There is only one way that makes sense to us on how to retire the REAL federal debt. That is, to pro-rate the total amount of debt and reapportion it across every federal public official who has been elected or appointed over the past forty years. Turn those names with their pro-rated share of the federal debt over to the IRS for them to handle, to include penalties and interest, as a generational debt. In short let those that caused it and their ancestors make good on the damage they have caused the rest of us. The generational feature is an administrative add on in order to mimic the absurd death taxes they now place on farm owners and small business operators. Paybacks are a b****.

Americans are going to pay more taxes and their standard of living is going to fall another 15% during Obama´s second term, for a total 30% reduction in America´s standard of living for Obama´s two terms. American wanted it, voted for it, now has it.

There are no spending cuts, only tax increases. This is not ´austerity´, it´s an assault on working people.

Austerity--or profligacy?

Reply 7 - Posted by: navybrat, 1/12/2013 12:45:38 PM     (No. 9112750)

It is not a tax increase, it is a contribution. Spending our tax money is not spending, it is investing. Meant to be sarcastic, but it is what the left wants us to believe. It is how the democrate toadies talk down to us.

I would suggest the author needed an easy way to write this, and so depended on the usual White House sources to write this for him.

Previous posters have said it best.

That´s why they call people like this LIV´s.Most conservatives probably realize these were temporary cuts. They didn´t work and robbed the trust fund so why keep them? Millions of people in this country have taken private austerity measures and that non spending is slowing the economy down.

Borrowing money to give people to spend hurts the country in the long run because interest on the debt eats up a bigger share of the revenue pie.

People who fear Obama will snag their income or wealth are hoarding it.People have also learned their lesson on too much borrowing themselves.

BTW,#1 the left considers tax cuts=spending.

Reply 10 - Posted by: RKfree2b, 1/12/2013 12:56:36 PM     (No. 9112773)

Austerity definition(even Wikipedia has the correct definition):
In economics, austerity refers to a policy of deficit-cutting by lowering spending via a reduction in the amount of benefits and public services provided.

So, the socialist, communist wanna be folks take a word and make it mean what they want it to mean, not what it´s defined as being.

Let´s put their feet to the fire with demands to really begin austerity measures, and CUT GOVERNMENT SPENDING. That will really put the hurt on these government wonks and their ilk, and stop putting it on the middle class.

Unfortunately, this decrease in workers take home pay is just the beginning of their economic plight. In 2014 when the Obamacare
law hits full force, there will be additional
decreases in wages, or job downgrades, or decreased hours, or layoffs so that companies can reduce their personnel head-count. Anyone who supported Obama will NOT be pitied. They voted for this reduced living standard and did not care enough to learn the facts.

H L Mencken had it so right: "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it, good and hard."
The United States of America is NOT a Democracy. It IS a Republic! Democrats are the enemy within, destroying our Republic... good and hard!

None of this additional revenue does anything to bring down the budget deficit, so the basic premise of the author is false.

There is no austerity involved, just theft of additional taxpayer dollars.

Reply 15 - Posted by: Pearson365, 1/12/2013 2:45:05 PM     (No. 9112947)

Reuters use of austerity is designed to put blame on Repubs, as in "Boehner, Cantor and other GOP meanies forced poor little Bammie to accept austerity in order to prevent reductions in entitlements".

Wait until the deficit talks for Reuters, AP, NY Times and NBC to produce articles on severe, crippling, mean, racist austerity that throws your grandparents to the wolves. Obama will only invest, Repubs will only impose austerity measures.

It´s safe to call them the Obama taxes.

The beauty of it all is that anyone who WORKS, must make contributions to the government´s Ponzi scheme. This has nothing to do with the deficit, income taxes, or any of the other things that Washington DC wastes money on.

The good news is the stupid people who supported Obama will be hurt the most these next four years. Bad news, a lot of us will not enjoy the ride to the bottom.

There´s been a lot of discussion lately about what Detroit needs. Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Kevyn Orr emergency manager over Motown several months ago. If Orr can´t get the books in order in the next six weeks, the city faces possible bankruptcy, reports Reuters. Why is the once-glorious birthplace of the automobile in so much trouble? On Monday, May 27, PBS Independent Lens airs an important film, "Detropia," that explores the crisis in Detroit. Here are some issues presented in the documentary. "Detropia," a Loki Films project, is not just a film drive-by of Detroit ruins.

The New York Times reports the Department of Justice investigated national security leaks given to Times reporter David Sanger over his story last year about the Stuxnet virus by pulling all the email and phone records of government officials who communicated with the reporter. Last summer, Sanger reported the U.S. helped develop the Stuxnet virus and used it to attack Iran, becoming the first country to carry out a sustained cyber attack with the intent of destroying another country´s infrastructure. Hillary Clinton for president in 2016? Husband Bill says, "Relax." Let his wife enjoy a bit of a private life for the first time in two decades. But as far as the pollsters are concerned, the 2016 race is underway. And Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is certainly acting like he´s in the race. The latest poll out of Iowa has former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton beating Florida Sen. Marco Rubio handily (48 vs. 37 percent), but could face a tougher race against Senator Paul (46 vs. 42 percent), according to a new poll by Quinnipiac University.

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Taliban gunmen launched a coordinated attack on an international aid group’s guesthouse in an upscale Kabul neighborhood Friday, setting off a furious firefight that lasted several hours and renewing fears of the insurgents’ ability to strike virtually at will in the heart of the capital. The late-afternoon attack took place in Kabul’s Shar-e-Naw district, home to numerous heavily fortified compounds housing international aid groups and Afghan governmental and security entities. The assault began with a powerful car bomb detonated at the gates of the guesthouse used by workers for the International Organization for Migration

Fired for word ´negro´:
Bronx teacher claims

A Bronx teacher fired after a student complained about her use of a racial slur says the whole thing is just a ridiculous case of meaning lost -- literally -- in translation. Petrona Smith, 65, was a non-tenured teacher at the bilingual school PS 211 until March 2012, when she was fired after a student complained of being called "negro" and "a failure." But Smith, who is black and a native of the West Indies, said the student misunderstood her meaning: she was using the word "negro," the word for the color black in Spanish

The murder of a soldier in south London on Wednesday has prompted fears of a backlash against British Muslims after the English Defence League staged an impromptu rally in the capital and two mosques were attacked. The BNP leader, Nick Griffin, has also reacted to the killing with provocative tweets calling for a protest in Woolwich and claiming the crime is the result of "mass immigration". Farooq Murad of the Muslim Council of Britain said the EDL´s rally in London on Wednesday night was cause for concern. "When attacks like these happen there´s always the danger of far-right extremism

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed "Allahu Akbar!" as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much roadkill. As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling

Washington rumor has it that Obama wants to be U.N. Secretary General. There are several reasons that make that likely, and if it´s true, it throws new light on a lot of Obama´s oddities -- including his Royalty Bows, his Apology Tours, his Muslim Sellout, and the Benghazi Cover-Up. But first -- why would Obama be planning to become the chief of the U.N. before he has even finished his second term?

Fox News chief Roger Ailes has sent a memo to his subordinates at the leading cable news network. He sent this memo to his staff today in connection with the federal investigation into an alleged leak to Fox News reporter James Rosen, a story that the Washington Post’s Ann E. Marimow broke earlier this week. The memo’s a masterpiece, too. For all those who wonder what it is about Ailes that endears his people to him — and that makes him such a good interviewee for any media reporter lucky enough to get an audience
