| In what seems like a surprise move, the White House working group on gun control is considering expanding federal funding for cops in schools. It was the NRA´s Wayne LaPierre who, a week after the shooting in Newtown, recommended placing armed police officers in every school in America. The idea was ridiculed by the left but has been embraced by the school superintendent in Newtown at the behest of many parents. There are currently two officers present at each of the six schools in the Newtown district. The White House has found that even many Democrats

This is an overreaction, no matter whether it comes from the Right, the Left or in-between. There are certainly SOME schools that require armed security -not from outsiders, but from their own students- but the claim that every single school in the nation is in such danger as to require police protection is simply absurd. And it plays into the agenda of gun-control advocates, for if the danger is truly that great, more stringent gun control is certainly needed.
Where are the statisticians when we need them? Why are we not being given the relative risk to school children of being murdered by crazed attackers, compared to the risk of injury and death from other causes? This commotion -it hardly merits the names of discussion or debate- is driven purely by emotions and perceptions. It is all sound and fury, signifying nothing, unless some numbers are supplied to quantify the actual risk.

Hilarious. I just read an article slamming Obama for not considering the NRA option, and then when he does consider that option, he gets slammed again because of the costs.
So which is it: how can LaPierre be brilliant for coming up with the idea but Obama be stupid for considering it?

A simpler and more cost-effective solution. Let the states handle it though their National Guard. One or two Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen or Marines to stand guard at each school. Leave the details to the state, but have an armed military presence in the school.
Again, this should be a *state-run* program. Not one with D.C. fluff and pork in the mix.

Police in schools sends the right message to kids. They are the good guys trying to keep them safe. This is opposite of the attitude in many homes where the police are bad guys to avoid and not cooperate. Perhaps it is the most effective way to instill a sense of civic reponsibility so many children never learn. I would happily pay extra taxes to get specially trained police in all schools and I don´t even have kids in school. Its not the be all end all solution to violence against our children, but it is a deterent for more than just armed crazies. Parents will realize there will be someone in authority asking questions at school and they will be more likely keep their illegal activities away from their children. I don´t necessarily like Obama or Wayne Pierre but it is a good idea. We waste billions and get nothing in return. This would be money well spent.

An IRS supervisor working in Washington told congressional investigators that she personally reviewed applications from groups for tax-exempt status, in testimony that appears to show the agency’s scrutiny of conservative groups extended beyond the confines of the office in Cincinnati. Holly Paz, who was a supervisor in the Internal Revenue Service’s tax-exempt status division, indicated during an interview with congressional investigators that she did review such applications, but indicated that she believed “tea party” meant political advocacy in general — not necessarily conservative groups.

The Supreme Court ruled today in Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council that federal law does not allow states the option of requiring voters to prove they are American citizens when they register to vote. Syria is turning out to be a sort of Spanish Civil War of our age, with Hezbollah and Iran playing the role of fascist Italy and Germany, and the Islamic nations and jihadists that of Stalin’s Russia, as the moderates disappear and the messy conflict becomes a proxy war for greater powers, with worse to come. Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. It is understood that a contingency plan is in place for the unlikely event that an attempt would be made on the President’s life. The Secret Service also have diplomatic immunity which will allow them to shoot to kill a would-be assassin without fear of prosecution. As part of the “evacuation route” plan, they would be able to spirit the President by chopper to one of the carriers where a jet is on standby to take him back to the United States.
