| The U.S. Department of Homeland Security urged computer users to disable Oracle Corp´s Java software, amplifying security experts´ prior warnings to hundreds of millions of consumers and businesses that use it to surf the Web. Hackers have figured out how to exploit Java to install malicious software enabling them to commit crimes ranging from identity theft to making an infected computer part of an ad-hoc network of computers that can be used to attack websites. "We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem," the Department of Homeland Security´s Computer Emergency Readiness Team said

Mac users , if you have downloaded and installed Java since your October update, you too are vulnerable.

Wanted: a computer OS secured at the kernel level. MCU designers have addressed this issue (protected memory blocks) - it´s in the OS kernel.
Hints:
* Place the OS kernel in ROM. Provide physical protection to access if in EEPROM/Flash (a physical switch that must be thrown). * Eliminate all "back doors" * Provide priority user override to regain control, similar to the old DOS ctrl-C. (Make this part of the hardware reset module.)
It can be done - but will annoy and inconvenience programmers and IT types who desire remote access and debugging, and block some features of certain apps. There is no free lunch: tech "sexiness" has a price.
We are approaching the point where we must choose between certain functionality and basic security. Time to end or at least curtail the "bubble gum and piano wire" patch fixes and make systems secure from the ground up.

Don´t get too excited. Java is not the same as JavaScript. Most home computers probably don´t have Java installed.

Actually you very likely DO have Java installed. Follow the instructions from my link to disable it until this gets sorted out. It´s not difficult..honest!

Thanks #6. I use ´´Java´´ throughout the day with my financial activities - but if as you say, what most of us use is really Javascript VM I guess that I shouldn´t be worried.

While it´s true that Java and javascript are two different animals, don´t assume Java isn´t running on your computer. It´s used a lot.

Legions of Wimbledon fans may find it hard to credit in the man who once defined bad behaviour on the tennis court, but Jimmy Connors says he ‘turned on the charm’ the first time he chatted up Chris Evert.(Snip)Although she has since bitterly regretted giving up on a ‘good, solid marriage’, what some have described as her mid-life crisis struck in 2006 when she divorced Mill after 18 years. The Evert pendulum had swung back again towards an assertive Alpha Male: she had fallen in love with Australian world golfing champion Greg Norman. He was Mill’s best friend

The House voted to repeal ObamaCare on Thursday for the third time since Republicans took over the chamber in 2011. Only two Democrats sided with Republicans in the party-line 229-195 vote — Jim Matheson (Utah) and Mike McIntyre (N.C.). All Republicans voted in favor of repeal. This is the 37th time the House GOP has voted to repeal or defund at least part of the bill, but this latest bill will also not become law given Democrats´ control of the Senate. Still, many House Republicans had clamored for the bill from Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) to be considered,

Back in March, The Wall Street Journal’s Damian Paletta profiled Daniel Werfel — then the controller for the White House budget office, and today the newly named acting commissioner of the IRS — focusing on his role in instructing the government how to deal with the sequester’s $85 billion in budget cuts. Here are some highlights from the profile: Known in the White House as “Danny,” Mr. Werfel graduated from Cornell University, earned a master’s degree in public policy from Duke University and a law degree from the University of North Carolina. His first 12 years in the federal

One of President Barack Obama´s re-election campaign co-chairmen used a leaked document from the IRS to attack GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney during the 2012 election, according to the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).(Snip)NOM discovered that when HRC published its confidential financial documents, it failed to conceal the source of the documents. “After software removed the layers obscuring the document, it is shown that the document came from the Internal Revenue Service,” NOM asserted in its April 2012 release. “The top of each page says, ‘THIS IS A COPY OF A LIVE RETURN FROM SMIPS. A former administrator at the New York nonprofit that distributes German reparations to Holocaust survivors was convicted yesterday of running a $57 million fraud that used Russian immigrants to pose as victims of the Nazis. A Manhattan federal jury deliberated five hours before finding Semen Domnitser guilty of conspiracy and mail fraud. Oksana Romalis and Luba Kramrish were also convicted of swindling the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany. Domnitser, Romalis and Kramrish were the only three of 31 defendants to maintain their innocence in what US Attorney Preet Bharara called “unthinkable crimes.”

Obama administration officials who were in key positions on Sept. 11, 2012, acknowledge that a range of mistakes were made the night of the attacks on the U.S. missions in Benghazi, and in messaging to Congress and the public in the aftermath. The officials spoke to CBS News in a series of interviews and communications under the condition of anonymity so that they could be more frank in their assessments. They do not all agree on the list of mistakes and it's important to note that they universally claim that any errors or missteps did not cost lives and reflect "incompetence rather than malice or cover up.

Watching President Obama trying to dodge raindrops and responsibility yesterday reminded me of the moment when Dorothy pulls back the curtain and discovers that the Wizard of Oz is “just a man.” Stripped of his spell of mystery and power, the wizard is worse than mortal. He’s a fake. So it was with Obama in the Rose Garden. His performance was tired and trite, ordinary to the point of dull. His veneer of passion was so transparent that you could see him trying to summon his old-time magic by pushing the buttons

STANDING BEFORE reporters Thursday, President Obama declined an invitation to compare the recent scandals weighing down his administration with those that forced President Nixon to resign in 1974. So allow us to do the work for him: There is no comparison. Nixon, in a series of crimes that collectively came to be known as Watergate, directed from the White House and Justice Department a concerted campaign against those he perceived as political enemies, in the process subverting the FBI, the IRS, other government agencies and the electoral process to his nefarious purposes. Mr. Obama has done nothing of the kind.

The State Department, under Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, created an arrangement for her longtime aide and confidante Huma Abedin to work for private clients as a consultant while serving as a top adviser in the department. Ms. Abedin did not disclose the arrangement — or how much income she earned — on her financial report. It requires officials to make public any significant sources of income. An adviser to Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines, said that Ms. Abedin was not obligated to do so. The disclosure of the agreement that Ms. Abedin made with the State Department comes as her husband,

In the wake of one of the worst abuses of government power in recent history, many are rushing to frame the Internal Revenue Service scandal as simply an attack on conservative activists. That view risks creating a partisan political football and misses a fundamentally scarier abuse that exceeds the scandals of Watergate or any other prior government abuse. The IRS has admitted that since May 2010 it targeted grassroots-conservative organizations that had applied for tax-exempt status, unfairly subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny due to their political leanings. Such groups were told they were required to comply with IRS requests,

President Obama’s press conference in the rain was not a success, if by success, his supporters would mean an event which convinces anyone who doesn’t work for him that he’s getting ahead of the scandal deluge. The sight of a Marine holding an umbrella over his head only added to the weirdness of the event. So what did we learn? 1. He has full confidence in Attorney General Eric Holder, the man who purportedly recused himself (whenever) without putting it in writing (whatever). When asked about the untrammeled snooping on Associated Press reporters and editors,

The lawmaker leading the charge to investigate the Benghazi terror attack on Friday subpoenaed the co-author of a report that slammed the State Department but didn´t interview Hillary Clinton. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday. The subpoena comes in the wake of a series of acrimonious public exchanges this week between the two men. Issa didn´t issue a subpoena to former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Michael Mullen, who co-authored the Benghazi report with Pickering.
