| The American Cancer Society says there now is enough evidence to recommend screening certain older, heavy smokers for lung cancer. The society is releasing new guidelines today for annual CT lung scans. But they are only recommended for people ages 55 to 74 who have smoked a pack of cigarettes a day for 30 years or the equivalent, such as two packs a day for 15 years. Research shows that screening these people can cut the risk of dying of lung cancer by 20 percent. Whether screening would help others is not known, so scans are not recommended for them.

My best friend from school days died a long, horrible death from lung cancer. Discovered too late to be successfully treated.
Although some will argue that we shouldn´t be burdened with the cost of scans for those who have disregarded the overwhelming data (check bladder cancer, for example, and note that the first question when one is discovered to have cancer of any organ is "Do you smoke?" And if you did and quit, the question expands to: "How long did you smoke? How many packs a day? When did you quit"), this seems like a good cost-benefit tradeoff. The cost of cancer treatment is great, especially when compared with the cost of scans and early detection.

The Am cancer Society may recommend this , but I can´t see the Obamacare "death panels" OKing this. You get over age 65 and you are on your own.

I think this is a good idea.
I also think they need abdominal imaging perhaps to check for an abdominal aneurism-common in older men who are heavy smoker.
Xrays are cheap.

I would be careful going down the slippery slope of questioning if we should pay for a smoker´s healthcare.
Next would we question treating someone´s liver damage from heavy drinking? How about AIDS treatment? Your daughter´s STDs?
We are ALL mere mortals with faults.

My dad was a textbook case, apparently. Lifelong smoker...abdominal aneurism...bladder cancer...the cancer spread to the bones & that´s what killed him.
