What’s Lost if the
Voting Rights Act Falls?

Odds are, the Supreme Court will strike down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act after hearing a case from Alabama that will be argued next month. If the part of the law called Section 5 does indeed go down, minority voters in Southern states and elsewhere will lose a key bargaining chip. Section 5 has enabled them to beat back some attempts to make it harder for them to vote, and helped insure that the gains they’ve made in representation and redistricting are not rolled back. As another recent fight over South Carolina’s voter ID law shows,

Comments:
What´s "lost" is the federal government´s unfair, selective and discriminatory ability to hammer southern states where there´s no evidence of suppression. And, voter ID is not making it harder for minorities to vote, because it applies to all voters.

The idea that minority voters are somehow incapable of getting a photo ID is extremely racist. The idea that anyone should be able to walk in off the street and vote in any State without proving they are eligible is extremely dangerous. If the liberals can round up minorities and bus them to the polls they should be able to stop at the Secretary of State´s office on the way.

I must have led a very sheltered life. Been voting since the early 60´s and have yet to see a New White Panther dude standing on the steps with a billy club trying to keep blacks from voting.

Been voting for a very long time in the deep South and I have always had to present an ID. I never knew it was racist. See, most kids, if not all wanted a driver´s license. And the Dang things have a photo on ´em. And if one cared not to drive, one could the identical Driver´s card without the license part. It did require one to go to the one of many motor vehicle offices around the state and stand in line just like every one else. But it wasn´t that hard.

If voters must go to a little effort in order to cast a vote that assures us that the more informed people vote. As long as everyone is subject to the same rules no discrimination is involved. Liberals are always looking for some way to stack the deck. And will use the propaganda tactic of blaming the other side for doing what they themselves are doing.

Any pseudo democracy has a perfect right to protect the integrity of their voting systems, other wise why even go through the pretense of voting when the elections can easily be stolen. The left has figured out a way to avoid voting integrity, otherwise the couldn´t win big elections.

If latinos voted 80% republicans.the left would be on the border with machine guns themselves.

Reply 7 - Posted by: monique, 1/10/2013 7:26:17 AM     (No. 9108426)

it is certainly time to lose section 5 of the voting rights act. i still don´t see why people are so insistent that voter id is discrimitory. you have to have id for almost everything you do these days, cash a pay check, get on a plane, open a bank account, buy a gun or ammo. why not an id for something as important as voting? oh, right. libs and their hangers on don´t do those sort of things, only want to vote several times.

Voter fraud by the Democrats is alive and well. Even Alicia Colon agrees that it was voter fraud in Florida robbing Allen West of his seat. He gave in too easily, maybe he gave out of money, etc. As many have said if we fail to get voter ID in all states in 2016, we will lose again. I was having an ultrasound yesterday, what did I have to produce? A picture I.D., even though I was in the computer from previous visits. Do you really believe most minorities don´t have a picture I.D.?

All of the Voting Fraud I know if here is committed by Ds. [most by ´minorities´].

The Black D Chairman of a ward here drives Black voter in a van to multiple polling sites to vote under fraudulently registered voters names.[for payment]

WE need Voter ID NOW!!

When you go into a doctor´s office here you must show a photo ID, and have your picture taken by a digital camera, but when someone shows up to vote they don´t have to show any ID at all?

They were not able to find a single, believable case of a minority voter unable to get a picture ID. The one they thought they had said her parents didn´t have time to take her to get her license, but then she made time to fly to DC to tell congress that.

It´s all about the voter fraud. And the Republicans can´t do anything about it.

We had a good laugh the other night at the grocery store. The lady in front of me wrote a check for her purchases. The checker asked for her driver´s license. She looked it and accepted the check.

I commented, "funny it is ok showing our ID to cash a check but we can´t show an ID to vote". Everyone around agreed. Proof of the ignorance and stupidity of Liberals.

The only reason Liberals/Democrats are against voter ID is because they have nothing resembling ethics and integrity and WANT to cheat and steal elections. I defy any of them to prove me wrong.

Reply 15 - Posted by: rosewater, 1/10/2013 10:39:18 AM     (No. 9108816)

Liberals have no problem cheating because they are so morally superior to conservatives that they see it as their mission to ´save´ the country. Scum all.

I will never understand what the big deal is or WHY these people have lived their entire lives without having to have a picture ID.

When I moved to Texas in 1983 to go to grad school, in order to cash checks, I had to have a state issued TEXAS ID card. (At that time, my Alabama driver´s license did not have a photo on it--that wasn´t so important in those days.) I rode my bicycle across town (had to ride on some busy streets) to get to the DPS. When I got there, I learned that an ID card cost $5 and a driver´s license cost $8. I went for the driver´s license! --And in those days there was absolutely no problem with the DPS in my presenting my license with no picture to prove my identity. How sad our world has become.

Why can´t these people ride bicycles (surely they know someone with one if they don´t have one themselves), take light rail (sarcasm there), or WALK 10 miles in the snow or whatever to get one? It´s certainly not very important to these people, so they should stop whining about it. There are plenty of things *I* could complain about that are much more inconvenient that I have to figure out how to do EVERY DAY! GROW UP!

Check out the lines outside stores when a huge bargain is announced. Many times is it the so-called minorities who sit outside, rain, snow or shine for hours and sometimes days to make sure they get what is being sold.

It is those same voters who are so "disenfranchised" that they are unable to get any ID to prove he or she is eligible to vote. I am up to here with this crap!

The voting rights act was unconstitutional from the beginning. It should never have been allowed to exempt Northern and Far Western states.

THE BATHROOM IS LARGE, immaculate and low-lit, finished in rich wood, floor-to-ceiling mirrors and brushed metal. Wearing the thick bathrobe provided by an attendant, I walk from the shower to the wash basin. The heat radiates from the floor through my slippers. I have my own shaving gear with me but still browse through boxes and trays for accoutrements I might prefer. This is one of the nicest lavatories I´ve ever been in. It also happens to be 35,000 feet in the air. I´m aboard one of Emirates Airline´s double-decker Airbus A380s. According to the flight-progress map

It happens now and then. You hear a story so sad, so beautiful, so filled with loss and pain and grief and love, that it makes you cry. Really cry. Two years ago, I was making a grocery run for my family on Memorial Day when a story came on the local NPR station in Oxford, Miss. It was about a father whose son had been killed in action in northwest Afghanistan. The father was Paul Monti; his son was Sergeant Jared Monti. Jared died in Afghanistan trying to save the life of one of his men.

The recent attack on a British soldier by assassins wielding meat cleavers while bystanders looked on raises the question: “Why didn’t anyone try to help the victim?” Because British citizens are prohibited from carrying objects that could be used as “offensive weapons.” While it is well known that Brits cannot carry guns, a lesser known law prohibits any subject of the Queen from carrying a knife of consequence, pepper spray or a stun gun.According to the United Kingdom government website, the online storehouse of British government regulations, it is illegal to:

DALLAS—It hasn´t been the best of years for Big Tex, the 52-foot-tall animatronic cowboy who has greeted visitors to the State Fair of Texas for decades. His mechanical hand, which waved from side to side as he bellowed "Hoooowdy folks," stopped working before the fair opened last September. His 60th birthday celebration, which was to include one of the country´s biggest marching bands, was rained out. Then catastrophe struck three days before the fair ended last October. After a suspected electrical short inside his size 70 cowboy boots, Mr. Tex went up in a burst of flames that devoured

What would help a lot right now, as the chilling reality of savagery engulfs us, would be a cultural green light to begin calling evil what it is, to begin calling it by its name, to stop dancing around demographics because of the fear someone, somewhere will take offense. There is always someone, somewhere looking for a reason to be offended. Jesse Jackson has fashioned a lucrative career out of being perpetually peeved. It works if you know how to play the game. And one of the reasons it works is that too many people who ought to know better allow themselves

White House silent about Holder

The White House on Friday didn’t respond to a report that Attorney General Eric Holder authorized the seizure a Fox News reporter’s phone and email records — and with no daily press briefing scheduled Friday that could mean silence from the administration through the Memorial Day weekend. NBC News reported Thursday that Holder approved the search of Fox News reporter James Rosen’s private emails and phone records in a probe of leaked government information. That revelation came just as the president ordered Holder to review Justice Department guidelines for investigating reporters. White House officials have not yet responded

Can Obama Declare Peace?

President Obama’s speech at the National Defense University calling for an end to the war on terror forces the question of who gets to declare peace. The Left wing in our political debate has been agitating for some time to repeal the authorization to use military force that the Congress passed after 9/11. The President boarded the bandwagon yesterday. He vowed he would sign no laws designed to expand the mandate and declared outright that he looks forward “to engaging Congress and the American people in efforts to refine, and ultimately repeal” the congressional mandate to use force.

On Wednesday, Drummer Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, a man who had served Queen and country honorably in the hell of Helmand Province in Afghanistan, emerged from his barracks on Wellington Street, named after the Duke thereof, in southeast London. Minutes later, he was hacked to death in broad daylight and in full view of onlookers by two men with machetes who crowed "Allahu Akbar!" as they dumped his carcass in the middle of the street like so much roadkill. As grotesque as this act of savagery was, the aftermath was even more unsettling

Washington rumor has it that Obama wants to be U.N. Secretary General. There are several reasons that make that likely, and if it´s true, it throws new light on a lot of Obama´s oddities -- including his Royalty Bows, his Apology Tours, his Muslim Sellout, and the Benghazi Cover-Up. But first -- why would Obama be planning to become the chief of the U.N. before he has even finished his second term?

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose
