| Just as China, Japan, India, Russia, Norway, and the US Academy of Sciences hone in on the tantalising prospect of safe, clean, and ultimately cheap energy from thorium nuclear reactors, the Europeans seem to be going in the opposite direction. I return to the thorium theme so soon after my column on Monday because a great number of readers share my enthusiasm for the mineral, an optimal way to restore public trust in nuclear power after the Fukushima disaster. Thorium reactors are the ultimate in safety. This technology was abandoned because it didn´t lead to enriched fuel for bombs.

Tight oil has been developed in the US with zero investment from government. The first well was drilled in ND by an independent operator who had a vision for how the oil could be liberated. It was drilled in 2005 but not developed until 2006. Almost a year was lost buying up cheap leases before drilling began in earnest. Oil in Eagle Ford in TX wasn´t proven until 2008. Texas has since increased their oil output by 1 million bpd and ND has added something like 800,000 bpd. If its a good idea, it will happen without government.

Hard to fathom the idiocy that finds a tsunami´s impact on an island nation to be a referendum on the dangers of nuclear power in the middle of the European continent.

Once the thorium reactor proves superior it will be used. I don´t see that small fusion will arrive soon.
The EU is not the world and a lot of nations want cheap electricity and will adopt a better nuclear.
All it will take is one large reactor that really works. And is seen to work.
I expect it to come out of India or China or Japan or Canada or Russia. Even Israel.
The world doesn´t have to wait for Europe or the US anymore. And that is good considering the senile bureaucracies that hold us back.

Nato has handed over security for the whole of Afghanistan for the first time since the Taliban were ousted in 2001. At a ceremony in Kabul, President Hamid Karzai said that from Wednesday "our own security and military forces will lead all the security activities". Observers say the best soldiers in the Afghan army are up to the task but there are lingering doubts about some.
