| The federal government ran up a $293 billion deficit in the first quarter of fiscal 2013, which ended Dec. 31, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated Tuesday. The government´s fiscal year starts on Oct. 1st. At this pace, the deficit would be on pace to top $1 trillion for the fifth-straight year in 2013. All the trillion-dollar deficits have taken place under President Obama. By the White House’s own estimate, the New Year’s Eve tax deal with Congress will only reduce the deficit by $4 billion this year, once increased spending such as on unemployment benefits

Since I never studied economics, or played an accountant on TV, could someone explain how the first quarter of fiscal 2013 ENDED on December of 2012?

If the first quarter deficit was 293 billion, its safe to conclude that the result for the full year will be closer to 1.2 trillion. This president can´t help himself when spending other people´s money.

#2 - The federal government´s fiscal year (FY) runs from 1 Oct through 30 Sep. FY 2013 began in Oct 2012. Thus, the first quarter of FY 2013 ended on 12/31/2012.

Let´s see, the last Bush deficit was $450 billion and the Democrats were howling.
Obomination was elected, had a veto-proof Democrat Senate and House, so they passed their supposed one-time $800 billion stimulus which exploded the deficit past $1.5 trillion.
This "one-time" stimulus spending is all borrowed, and is where the Republicans need to keep harping "why this January 2009 stimulus spending is still in the budget".

I believe #5, that ´´This ´one-time´ stimulus spending is all borrowed,´´ is not quite accurate. We need to remember all the money that had to be handed out as Thank You Notes.

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. WASHINGTON- The Internal Revenue Service is about to pay $70 million in employee bonuses despite an Obama administration directive to cancel discretionary bonuses because of automatic spending cuts enacted this year, according to a GOP senator. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa says his office has learned that the IRS is executing an agreement with the employees´ union on Wednesday to pay the bonuses. Grassley says the bonuses should be canceled under an April directive from the White House budget office. The directive was written by Danny Werfel, a former budget official who has since been appointed acting IRS commissioner.

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.
