| In a TV arena in which premiums are placed on the fanciful and trendy, screaming housewives and snarling reality-show participants, no one seemed more out of place or less likely to become a popular star than Huell Howser. His platform was traditional and unflashy -- highlighting familiar and off-the-beaten-track spots all around California in public television series with titles such as "California´s Gold," "Visiting," "Road Trip" and "Downtown." But though his shows were focused on points and people of interest, it was Howser who turned into the main attraction, tackling his subjects with an awestruck curiosity and relentless enthusiasm. One of the few PBS shows worth watching . . . not slick, not political,just good travel shows to many places you might otherwise drive past . . . RIP

A genuine guy. A sincere guy. A nice guy. Made you feel comfortable and able to escape the real world to go on a journey of discovery with him. Truly a loss. May God have mercy on his soul. RIP Huell Howser, you were a good man!

I saw his obituary today, and my heart hurt. Condolences to his friends & family. Huell showed the California that used to be. He will live forever in his TV shows.

In House testimony Friday, former Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller explained that the IRS mistakes in handling applications for non-profit status from tea party groups were due, in large part, to a flood of applications following the Citizens United decision. Miller said the targeting was a botched attempt to centralize the process to account for the increased workload. President Obama announced Wednesday that acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller would resign in the wake of the agency scandal in which conservative groups were targeted -- though Miller was apparently set to step down anyway. An official close to Miller told Fox News, shortly after Obama´s brief announcement, that the IRS chief was "set to resign the position of acting commission as of early June." So allow us to do the work for him: There is no comparison. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) formally demanded that retired ambassador Thomas Pickering submit to being deposed by the committee next Thursday.
