Democrats say they want to raise as much as $1 trillion in new revenues through tax reform later this year to balance Republican demands to slash mandatory spending. . . . The emerging consensus, however, is that the next installment of deficit reduction should reach $2 trillion and about half of it should come from higher taxes. This sets up tax reform as one of the biggest fights of the 113th Congress, which began on Thursday. Headline repaired and split by staff
|
Comments: The article says democrats want a 1-1 ratio of new taxes and spending cuts in cutting the deficit. I have heard this exact proposal coming from Boehner already as his opening bid in the debt ceiling negotiation. This means there should be no dispute at all at least until Obama doubles down on his demands.

This will be totally forgotten/dismissed as soon as the socialists realize that their tax increase will not generate the revenues they expect. They rarely do.

I do not want to hear of the GOP talking or agreeing to tax reform. Democrats don´t give a whit about tax reform. They want tax increases and always have to clothe their intentions in euphemisms.

Biggest and most dismissed revelation in the article
"The biggest question for Democrats is how much revenue is realistically available through tax reform."
Please reaquant yourselves with the Laffer curve. Then realize that we are currently at the actual apex of the curve. That means two things:
First, the laffer corrolary is that Government will work to maximize its revenue. Once maximized economic forces will cause only minor changes in revenues collected. Increasing absolute taxation rates above the apex results in less, not more revenue.
Second, at the apex even very small tax policy changes will cause people to change their behaviour so as to avoid the additional tax burden.
Taken together what this means is that Government does is now at the point where no matter what policy changes are made, no additional revenue will be generated. Either people will drastically change behaviour (or move) to avoid the tax or the decline in GDP caused by the tax increase will decrease the actual revenue available.
The second corrolary is that at the true apex everything is in "balance" taxation level, Government revenues and GDP GROWTH. GDP growth must also stagnate because each time it grows, government will move to maximize its revenues and the resulting pressure will shrink GDP, lowering real revenue generation. Government revenue can only decline from this point out.

You mean they are going to lower taxes, reduce regulations, close the EPA, repeal Obamacare...? If not, then they are not going to get more revenue.

Shut down EPA, Dept. of Education, cut 20% off all the rest. Have a 6 (bi-partisan) member board checking spending bills and vetoing pork in each and every one. Pass NO bill unless it has been online for ONE month, and no changes before voting. Put the Obamas on a spending diet for vacations. One million per year tops.

The American People should file a class action lawsuit against the Executive and Legislative Branches of the government and refuse to pay anymore taxes until the Senate passes a budget.
Yes. I know. Only in my dreams.

I´m confused. Are they saying they are going to extract another $1 Trillion out of the United States economy when it is already staggering under the attack of the killer spendthrift democrats? Does this not subtract a Trillion bucks out of the GDP? What does that do to the GDP rate of increase or decrease? On top of the already staggering load of increased costs of the ACA they want to pile on like an overweight thuggish big city football team? Is this reasonable?

A lot of people still don´t get it. Obama and his minions couldn´t care a whit about logic, math, Lafer curve, common sense, or the common good. Even most Congressmen don´t have a clue. We are not dealing with anything like has come before. These are radical ideologues and they are just now getting started. Republicans have one of two options - capitulate or shut down the government. The dumbed down, low-information idiots have reached the dreaded proportion to keep these communists where they are. I don´t have an answer to that problem but I´d like to think I´ll live long enough to say "We told you so" when they´re scavenging in the streets.

That does not make sense! That would be the same amount where you started out at unless they know McConnel and Boehner will say yes yo cuts 10 years in the future and tax increases right away!

FTA: Newly elected Sen Chris Murphy calls Connecticut a "fiscally responsible state." Know any other good jokes? Gov Malloy (D) gave Connecticut the largest tax increase in the history of the state last year. Guess what? We have huge deficits and are building a bus lo nowhere. Prime example of a state whose 3 branches of gubmint are all Democrat controlled. Want a sneak preview of what the progressives in DC want for the country? Look at Connecticut!

Strange how they never look to collect on foreign aid repayment. We are the only country stupid enough to borrow money to give away. Then write the debt off because they are third world countries.

‘Outlook: Islam.” So reads the personal webpage of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who ravaged Boston this week, along with his now-deceased brother and fellow jihadist, Tamerlan — namesake of a 14th-century Muslim warrior whose campaigns through Asia Minor are legendary for their brutalization of non-Muslims. Brutalizing our own non-Muslim country has been the principal objective of jihadists for the last 20 years. This week marks a new and chilling chapter: the introduction on our shores of the tactics the self-styled mujahideen have used to great, gory effect for the past decade in Afghanistan and Iraq.

It was Wednesday, shortly before Senator Rand Paul’s bravura 13-hour filibuster, the Jimmy Stewart star turn in Paul’s crusade to have the Constitution ban a bogeyman of his own making: the killing of American citizens on American soil by America’s armed forces — a scandal that clearly cries out for action, having occurred exactly zero times in the 20 years since jihadists commenced hostilities by bombing the World Trade Center.

On January 1, 2013 one third of Republican congressmen, following their leaders, joined with nearly all Democrats to legislate higher taxes and more subsidies for Democratic constituencies. Two thirds voted no, following the people who had elected them. For generations, the Republican Party had presented itself as the political vehicle for Americans whose opposition to ever-bigger government financed by ever-higher taxes makes them a “country class.”

Some brave thinkers recognize that beneath the intrigue surrounding the Benghazi tragedy lie the traces of something much larger and far more dangerous. Frank Gaffney and the Center for Security Policy hosted a panel on November 13, 2012 to discuss "Benghazi: US Foreign Policy and the Threat of Sharia Doctrine." Guest panelists included Dr. Andrew Bostom, Diana West, and Stephen Coughlin. The event was taped in its entirety and is available here.

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. She was determined to

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

President Obama on Thursday nominated Victoria Nuland, a State Department official involved in the editing of the administration´s talking points on Benghazi, to be the next assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs. Nuland, a career foreign service officer who was until recently State´s top spokesperson, had long been expected to be nominated the post to replace Philip Gordon, who Obama picked to serve as Middle East coordinator for the National Security Council. Nuland´s nomination -- which requires Senate confirmation -- could come under scrutiny from Republicans who see her as playing a central role in shaping

What´s so interesting about 60 tea partiers protesting the IRS in San Jose, California on Tuesday, May 21st? The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. What was a DHS agent doing at the San Jose Tea Party protest? (snip) they weren´t just spying on us in San Jose and monitoring us in San Francisco, they were watching us throughout the entire state

Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

Anthony Weiner’s New York mayoral candidacy was only made more improbable today after he revealed that he visited a Houston psychiatric facility following his resignation from Congress in 2011. Haunted by scandal surrounding his sexually explicit online communications with women, the Democratic former congressman sought treatment for his compulsive behavior from mental health professionals at the Gabbard Center. According to its website, the facility provides “3-day outpatient psychiatric evaluation,” particularly to “professionals who are in personal or professional crises.” While Weiner did not disclose
