White House eyes gun

WASHINGTON- The Obama administration is formulating a broader strategy for gun control as it looks to reduce U.S. gun violence, those privy to the discussions say. Rather than just pursuing the reinstatement of the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, a White House working group led by Vice President Joe Biden is looking at a multi-prong approach that would include universal background checks for gun purchasers, creation of a national database to track guns, strengthening of mental health checks, and tougher penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, sources told The Washington Post.

If I were Obama, I would do the same thing.

Nothing wrong with stiffer penalties for those breaking the law. Nothing wrong with improving mental health issues, as long as there are controls to preclude arbitrarily disqualifying people who happen to disagree with Obama. Lots wrong with national registries of any sort for any purpose. Lots wrong with trying to implement background checks for a private, individual to individual sale, whether at a gun show or elsewhere. And mega-lots wrong with bans on large capacity magazines and some ignorant bureaucrat´s definition of an assault weapon.

Send Ol Joe into Chicago to get the illegal guns first....he is so likeable they will surely give up their guns.....

And Giving a gun to a minor? You mean like to a minor sibling? That´s smart!

These goofballs have no concept or ability to understand just what it takes to mitigate the problems they are using as leverage to get this done. The incidents, terrible as they might be, are a miniscule part of the problem.

The genius Chicago mayor can´t even reduce the gun violence in his town by a fraction of a percent. Demand that the head of every legitimate household be trained and armed and the crime rate would drop in double digits in two days.

Reply 6 - Posted by: Janjan, 1/6/2013 8:22:03 PM     (No. 9102190)

You mean it will be even more against the law then it is now to carry a gun into a school? Brilliant. That oughta do it.

Reply 7 - Posted by: chumley, 1/6/2013 8:25:50 PM     (No. 9102195)

Murder is already against the law. Murderers dont care.
So the obvious answer is to penalize abd crminalize people who do care.
Smooth move, ex-lax.
As they say, molon labe.

Zippy should get with his Hollywood anti-gun hypocrites. Two of their forthcoming epics are the seemingly ultra violent {lots of guns} Gangster Squad and Stallone´s newest revenge movie with the incredible title "Bullet To The Head".

#4 is right..
let´s start where the crime is..
immediate death penalty for any FELON using a weapon in any crime OR caught carrying by police in surprise searches in bars..
oh.. let´s not forget the REAL criminals..
the JUDGES, ATTORNEYS AND SOCIAL WORKERS who allow the above back on the street after their felony conviction...

#2: IIRC, this "gov´t" has essentially classified all returning veterans as mentally-unstable. They´d use "mental health" in a heartbeat to disarm us.

They have to find a way to keep the dangerous mentally ill population away from firearms. That´s where the problem is.

Try to over reach and ban guns will only hurt the Democrat´s chances in the 2014 election. That happened before, and it will certainly happen again.

The Police Executive Research Forum isn´t a law enforcement organization - it´s a gun control group. These morons haven´t said anything new since 1968.

There´s only one answer to all their findings and recommendations: No. Never. Shut up and go away.

This would be Obama´s FOURTH "Gun Violence Package":
1. Endless Drivebys - Murder the Chicago Way
2. Fast & Furious - Dead Mexicants Everywhere
3. Corner the Ammo Market - 1.5 Billion Rounds of Hollow Point Bullets
Now Comes...
4. Disarm America - If They Move Kill ´Em!

How about mental health checks for those selling weapons to Mexican drug cartels?

Barack Obama can be the first to have his head examined, if Wise King Barky is brave enough to stop hiding behind executive privilege and answer our questions about "Fast & Furious."

Several somebodies in Congress better make some noise about Fast and Furious and the gun running by O in the ME. And the crime rate in his "hometown," where gun controls are in place. And about the dems and their ACLU buddies making it impossible to commit the dangerous mentally ill. O should be up to his ears in shame, but always has the high ground because the media gives it to him and the GOP electeds are wimps.

Reply 21 - Posted by: Penney, 1/6/2013 9:39:11 PM     (No. 9102259)

What about the mental health of those who actually use a gun when they commit a crime?! Better yet, what about addressing the plight of the homeless in this country, as well as crimes committed, which are a direct result from the current lack of compassionate mental health policies?

Instead, 0bama and the statists apparently prefer to harrass law abiding citizens in their quest for power. ...The Founders would be alarmed at such BIG Governmental power grabs, ...which is of course what they sought to prevent when they secured the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights for every American citizen!

Reply 24 - Posted by: PageTurner, 1/7/2013 12:41:43 AM     (No. 9102422)

Not a one of those ´tough´ measures would have stopped the Sandy Hook shooting. You think a suicidal underage mentally sick gunman stealing his mom´s weapons before killing her would be deterred by any of this?

What garbage. Just an excuse to employ more Obamacrats at six figure salaries and fat pensions with retirement at 50.

Reading thru Obama´s new Global Development Council initiatives, they spend a lot of time re-naming their goals so we extremists don´t freak out.

It´s Mental Health not Guns! Agree w/ poster 2... We need to be cautious that the definition of peeps needing mental health controls on their lives need narrow definitions.

We are living with Alice, in Wonderland. Didn´t they already have laws in Connecticut against guns in a school zone? That worked well, didn´t it? What if a couple of the teachers had been trained and armed?

When Chelsea Clinton wanted to make a low-key visit to the hurricane-stricken Rockaways last fall, she arranged to take a trip with her close friend Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton. So some members of the Clinton camp were surprised and unsettled to learn that Ms. Abedin also brought along her husband, Anthony D. Weiner, the former congressman who had rarely been seen in public since resigning his seat the previous year. The next day, Mr. Weiner reactivated his Twitter account to post a video about the Rockaways. Photographs soon surfaced in New York news outlets

WASHINGTON — At times on Thursday, it seemed President Obama was taking part in a debate rather than giving a speech. Deep into an address at the National Defense University, where Mr. Obama sought to redefine America’s approach to fighting terrorism, a heckler repeatedly interrupted from the back of the room, demanding an end to drone strikes and the closing of the Guantánamo Bay detention center in Cuba. The heckler — though she objected strenuously to being described that way — was Medea Benjamin, a co-founder of Code Pink, a group opposed to United States military actions.

The owners of One Liberty Place in Center City Philadelphia filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge. The group is frequently seen perched on Center City street corners shouting at passersby through bullhorns. WASHINGTON — Schoolchildren from New Jersey shore communities battered by Superstorm Sandy will join Michelle Obama for a garden harvest next week. The White House says the first lady will also be joined Tuesday by students who helped plant the crops last month. The New Jersey students are from Union Beach Memorial School in Union Beach and Long Beach Island Grade School in Ship Bottom. Both schools were damaged in last October’s storm. Both also teach their students about healthy eating, which is one of the first lady’s causes. The students who helped plant lettuce, broccoli and various other crops

The public got its first look Thursday at Lois Lerner, who has gone from faceless IRS bureaucrat to the face that launched what feels like 1,000 congressional hearings and conspiracy theories. But it was only a brief sighting since she didn´t stay long at a House hearing to further probe her role in how some IRS workers came to target conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status. (Snip)She did make a short statement to declare her innocence, however. Lerner´s motivation was more transparent than much of what the IRS has done in connection with this controversy. When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. I’ve taken it a step further: The IRS was taking the Tea Party out of play for the 2012 election, as it looked to avoid a repeat of 2010 and another Tea Party landslide. There are a lot of numbers out there.

On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.

The California Republican said Lerner’s Fifth Amendment right to avoid self-incrimination was voided when she gave an opening statement this morning denying any wrongdoing and professing pride in her government service. “When I asked her her questions from the very beginning, I did so so she could assert her rights prior to any statement,” Issa told POLITICO. “She chose not to do so — so she waived.”

Is the worm turning against Barack Obama? After four-plus years of being given the benefit of the doubt by the bulk of the US media, the President now suddenly feels more vulnerable. Today both the New York Times and the Washington Post have run prominent and angry editorials and columns slamming the administration for its attempt to criminalise a Fox News reporter James Rosen for working a State Department source to obtain a story. The "Rosen Affair"--as it is now known--is poisoning the well in Washington at an alarming rate for Mr Obama, with an indignant White House press corps
