Plane With Italian Fashion
Executive Is Lost

A small plane carrying four Italian tourists, including the head of the Missoni fashion business, disappeared off the coast of Venezuela on Friday morning, prompting a sea and air search mission that continued Saturday. Vittorio Missoni, 58, an owner of the family-run label famed for its zigzag knitwear, and his wife, Maurizia Castiglioni, were aboard the plane, which was missing after takeoff from the island resort of Los Roques, the company confirmed in a statement on Saturday. The plane was bound for the international airport near the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, normally a half-hour trip.

This is one time you hope it was just a kidnapping - personal security in Venezuela is such that a "mogul" would be well advised to stay far away. The security services, police, armed forces are all aboard with the bad guys in that godforsaken country.

Fashion may seem small and trivial to us, but those Italian fashion moguls are billionaires and fashion is a large part of Italy´s GDP. It might be their top export, if not, definitely top five. An accident like this would be comparable to Steve Jobs´ plane going down and it will probably send shock waves through Italy´s markets Monday if they are a publicly traded company - and most of them are.

I liked Missoni´s beautiful fashion and hope the family can come up with a comparable substitute to lead the company, this must be very hard for them.

Meanwhile, a Venezuelan friend tells me on Facebook that the locals think it was probably Chavista capital controls that doomed the plane - airline owners cannot buy spare parts and do needed maintenance due to Chavez´s grip on dollars, it´s turned the whole economy to shambles and this would be a prime example.

Thank you, #7. This is very sad.

Missoni knits are classy and timeless, always in good taste. Do a search to see the images of Missoni´s classic designs.

I lived in Rome for four years, so I have a strong emotional attachment to Italy. I used to buy "Grazia" magazine every week when I went to the market. I can tell you that over 30 years later, the fashions featured in Grazia then would still be in style today. The Italians may not be good at government, but they lead the world of fashion.

Not familiar at all with this guy, and sad that anyone (almost anyone) suffers a tragedy. But what in the world is any thinking human being flying into Venezuela?

Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who was praised as the most popular Spanish writer since Cervantes, died today in Mexico City at the age of 87. Garcia Marquez, a former journalist who was born in Colombia but lived in Mexico for more than 30 years, is best known for his 1967 masterpiece, the epic, hallucinatory novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, about the trials and tribulations of one family over several generations. Widely taught in college, it has sold about 50 million copies in more than 25 languages. His other novels include Autumn of the Patriarch (1975), about a pathological fascist

"The economy and the social aspects are indivisible to us," commented on Tuesday the Minister of Petroleum and Mining Rafael Ramírez. "We are moving towards the creation of a different system," he added. Regarding the government´s so-called economic offensive, Ramírez stressed their new approach will focus on "production sectors so as to produce our own supplies and food." "Our economy has been under attack, and we will not wait until next year to take action; on the contrary, we have created a new exchange system, we have opened up new ways to allow the inflow of dollars," he stressed. India´s Supreme Court has created an official third sex for its transgender eunuchs and announced they will have a quota of government jobs and college places to help them overcome discrimination. The decision was met with jubilation by transgender charities who said it was a milestone in their fight against marginalisation in Indian society. "We are elated and thankful to the court," said Kalki Subramanium, a leading transgender rights activist. "The decision has come after a century of suppression and marginalisation by the legal and social systems. "This verdict is certainly landmark and a new beginning. The biggest challenge is the social recognition.

At least 12 people are dead and more than 2,000 homes have been destroyed by a large fire that wreaked havoc over the weekend in Valparaiso, Chile. Some 10,000 people have been forced to evacuate parts of the port city. Government spokesman Álvaro Elizalde says those figures are likely to go up as the fire continues to burn. The fire has been driven by strong winds, and efforts to fight the flames also have been complicated by the area´s steep terrain and lack of essential infrastructure, as NPR´s Lourdes Garcia-Navarro reports for our Newscast unit. She adds: "This is a city built on

Amnesty: President Obama often laments "our broken immigration system" as a reason for his failure to enforce its laws. But as a wave of illegals is about to descend here, the hard fact is that it´s his own policies that broke it. The nonpartisan Inter-American Development Bank and the Migration Policy Institute both reported optimal conditions for a big wave of illegal immigration into the U.S. from Mexico and Central America soon. Based on the slowdown in China´s economy, a recovery in U.S. low-skilled jobs such as construction, and rising U.S. interest rates, it´s fair enough.

After presenting at the Academy Awards this year, Kim Novak didn’t want to leave her house. The Hitchcock screen siren, 81, was too humiliated to venture from her home near the Rogue River in Oregon. She read the cruel posts and Internet snark about her appearance, and it was just too much. “It got to me like it gets kids and teenagers,” she told the Associated Press. The “Vertigo” actress, considered one of the great beauties in her day, posted a note on her Facebook wall Thursday, acknowledging that she’d gotten fat injections in her face and addressing her halted

President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

I live in Las Vegas. I live and breath Nevada politics. Something is very wrong. Something smells rotten in the Nevada desert. And Senator Harry Reid’s fingerprints are all over it. I am of course referring to the Bundy Ranch siege. This was a dispute between a Nevada ranching family with rights to the land in question for 140 years and the BLM (Bureayu of Land Management). The government claims they haven’t paid grazing fees for 20 years. The result was a government assault on the ranch- including snipers with assault rifles, SUV’s, helicopters, airplanes and over 200 heavily armed troops. No

It’s the stuff of Westerns: a showdown on the desert plains, the big bad government against an underdog farmer. Though the story has only grabbed national headlines in the past several days, rancher Cliven Bundy has illegally grazed cattle on the Nevada land surrounding his farm for over 20 years. He hasn’t paid grazing fees since 1993, and refuses to renew the necessary grazing permit.(Snip)Rather than using the avenues and pathways presented to him, Bundy has staunchly declared his own law and allegiances. Unfortunately, reality doesn’t work this way. If only it did—we could rebel for paying stupid taxes, refuse to

A group of seven multiracial Washington and Lee University (W&L) students are demanding the school remove all Confederate flags from campus and "acknowledge" General Robert E. Lee´s "dishonorable side." According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." The students say they will "engage in civil disobedience" if their demands are not met by September 1st. They added: "The

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren wrote in her forthcoming book that she was “hurt” and “angry” by 2012 reporting on her fraudulent claim to Native American heritage. “What really threw me, though, were the constant attacks from the other side,” Warren wrote in her book “A Fighting Chance.” “I would almost persuade myself that I was starting to get the hang of full-throttle campaigning and then — bam! Out of left field, the state Republican Party, or the Brown campaign, or some blogger, would launch a rocket at me,” Warren wrote, adding, ”I was stunned by the attacks.” This reporter (blogger?) reported extensively
