According to TPM, America´s favorite never-let-a-crisis-go-to-waste administration is preparing to ram through a number of restrictions to our Second Amendment civil rights as early as Jan 15. The idea behind this strategy is to strike while people´s heightened emotions are still scrambling common sense: The White House and gun control supporters are gearing up for a whirlwind month, with plans to pass reform legislation before outrage over the Sandy Hook massacre has a chance to fade. House Democrats are moving ahead with their own plans as well.
This was in Talking Points Memo, a leftist site. They´re blatantly admitting that they´re capitalizing on a tragedy. They´re twisting the facts. Their followers will applaud the tactic because they don´t care about the truth.
@#1: None of their proposals are enforceable without digging into people´s lives even more. And since nobody alive even knows how Adam Lanza got hold of his mother´s guns, it´s only a supposition that a gun safe would have stopped him.
#1, no way. Letting the camel´s nose into the tent means the whole camel soon follows. The 2nd amendment says ´keep´ too, in the activities that ´...shall not be infringed´. Over 20k gun laws and laws against murder didn´t stop that madman. He should have been put away - but that´s the nasty little gift from the LPs several decades ago that they don´t like to discuss - why he couldn´t be. The constitution isn´t stopping the LPs until it is backed up by armed force by the citizens. This is a long-term game by the LPS to disarms us. Please pay attention. As the founders said, (paraphrased) ´Jealously guard the tree of liberty and look with suspicion upon all who approach it´. Especially when they claim an encroachment is ´for the chilluns´ or ´for your own good´.
Obama-Biden continues to be "dead-wrong " about guns and recent mass murders. Example of facts...Mother who has guns and uses them...also knows she has a son with mental health issues that were getting worse and worse. The Mother delayed "intervention to both confine and treat her son...and also remove her guns from her home as a precaution". Time long since ran out...in fact in hind sight...the Mother used poor judgement. It was only the Mother who could prevent this massacre and she was the first person shot.
There have been some nice technological for gun owners lately. There are several small gun safes on the market that sit on your bedside table. Some are biometric...it reads your fingerprint and pops open. On others you hit a three letter code and it opens.
Not ideal perhaps but it keeps your pistol handy and secure and the kids and others can´t get to it.
#5, why should he have been "put away"? He had no police record, no evidence of any previous crime. There is no evidence he had ever been hospitalized for mental health reasons. An FBI investigator said there were no psychiatric meds in the house.
Are you going to have him "put away" because he may have had a diagnosis on the autism spectrum? The current rate for autism is 1 in 88 children - 1 in 59 males. This is the first time anyone on the autism spectrum has been implicated in a mass murder. How would you have picked him out to have him "put away"? He had brown hair, too...does that mean that we should put all the people with brown hair away?
Reality is that it needs to be more difficult for people who are mentally unstable, for whatever reason, to get hold of guns - especially the type that can quickly fire shot after shot. I keep hearing people say that a conniving criminal could figure out how to get around such systems, which may be true. But mentally unstable people generally are not conniving; they have one way of doing things in mind and, if you make that path harder to for them, they won´t dream up alternatives. You can´t lock up a sizable portion of the population on the off-chance that one of them might do something bad. At least, not in the America I know.
I hope it won´t happen, but people are in a panic. Have you been in a gun store lately? Many guns are back-ordered, ammo is swooped up as soon as it comes in. For some guns, the wait is months. It´s insane.
You are correct, #11, BUT - In order to make it difficult for the mentally challenged to gain access to firearms, you have to restrict the entire population, a proposition that is not acceptable to us for obvious reasons. There are plenty of other means and devices to kill on a mass scale if you are inclined but firearms are the only thing that stand between a tyrant and the people he would rule.
If there is an encroachment on the SA on the 15th I suppose we will be in a State of War with the Gubmint on the 16th. EVERYONE I have spoke with this week is ready. Most of us are tired of the threats. Let´s get this party started. It´s not the NRA they should be worried about. It´s the 150 million gun owners out here who are locked and loaded.
#11, a lot of mentally ill and unstable people are conniving. You don´t know much about mental illness, do you?
#1, while I understand a lot of people are very upset and disappointed in the Republican Party, I find it highly inappropriate and reprehensible to use the term "repugs" to describe anyone in the party. It is a term used by slimeball leftists who hang out in places like the Daily Koz and Democrat Underground. It would serve one well to carefully consider how people may view a person who uses such terminology on a site where most of the members are either Republicans or conservatives. By the way, the party is the people and the principles--NOT the elected politicians nor the unelected party bosses/workers. If there is a problem with the party, it is incumbent upon the people to clean it up.
I find it odd that we know so little about this shooting. I sensed an extraordinary amount of energy being expended by the cops on this investigation. Why? Could there be some major malfunction by the PD about this? I´m to understand that it took the cops 20 minutes to respond to the first 911 call. Seen other websites that transcribe the chronology and text of the PD commo, but it doesn´t appear the response time was nailed down.
Also, do we definitively know what weapon the shooter used?
What we do know, #2, is that Adam Lanza´s mother went on a two-night getaway immediately prior to his rampage, leaving him home alone. Then, when she returned, he shot her in the face in her bed. Who knows if a gun safe was even used. He had a couple of days to figure out how to get it open.
#9 and #19 - I agree. I know it may seem our phone calls to Congress are a waste of time but they are not! We need to burn up those switchboards! We can do it! Let the fighters we do have know they have our vigorous support.
Are they pushing this because they want us to react as we are reacting? Do they want armed conflict with us? Is this why Social Security, DHS etc have bought over a billion rounds of ammo? Is this why some small town police forces now have tanks? Is this Owebama´s excuse to fulfill Ayre´s dream of wiping out 25 million Americans and throwing the rest of us conservatives into those FEMA camps for re-education? Yes, it sounds like tinfoil hat stuff, but I´m beginning to wonder.
A year that began with President Barack Obama riding high after his re-election victory and inauguration ends with him in the biggest hole of his presidency. A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds the president with more Americans disapproving of his job performance than ever before; with half saying they’re either disappointed or dissatisfied with his presidency; and with 54% believing he’s facing a long-term setback. Perhaps more significantly, Obama has seen a drop in key presidential attributes, such as being honest and straightforward, being able to handle a crisis and being able to achieve his goals. “These are
The federal health-care law is becoming a heavier political burden for President Barack Obama and his party, despite increased confidence in the economy and the public´s own generally upbeat sense of well-being, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll suggests. Disapproval of Mr. Obama´s job performance hit an all-time high in the poll, at 54%, amid the flawed rollout of the health law. Half of those polled now consider the law a bad idea, also a record high. The survey of 1,000 adults conducted between Dec. 4 and Dec. 8 found a sharp erosion since January in many of the
House and Senate negotiators announced Tuesday evening a $1.012 trillion two-year budget deal to replace some of the automatic spending sequester budget cuts and avert another government shutdown in January. Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, said the two-year plan is a win for Republicans since it reduces the deficit by $23 billion without raising taxes or sacrificing core conservative values. “As a conservative, I think this is a step in the right direction. What am I getting out of this? I’m getting more deficit reduction. So the deficit will go down more by passing this than if we did nothing,”
More than half of Senate Republicans facing reelection next year face potentially viable tea party challenges — a historically large threat to the GOP establishment that could, once again, kill the party’s chances of taking back control of the chamber. A surprise challenge to Sen. John Cornyn, the No. 2 GOP leader, emerged at the last minute before Texas’s election filing deadline late Monday, and on Tuesday a conservative group with deep pockets threw its financial support behind a radiologist, who has never run for office, in a primary against Sen. Pat Roberts (Kan.), a 16-year veteran. Many of the
The current continuing resolution on federal spending expires in January, and Paul Ryan (on behalf of the Republican House) has been negotiating with Patty Murray (on behalf of the Democratic Senate) for an agreement to set spending levels for the remainder of FY 2014. It is not hard to understand the political considerations that drive House Republicans: the Democrats have been threatening to shut down the government again, as a means of diverting attention from the Obamacare fiasco. Republican understandably don’t want that to happen. But in policy terms, today’s agreement, while not terrible, represents a step backward. Spending levels
Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) was quick to announce his opposition to the Murray-Ryan budget deal: We need a government with less debt and an economy with more good paying jobs, and this budget fails to accomplish both goals, making it harder for more Americans to achieve the American Dream. Instead, this budget continues Washington’s irresponsible budgeting decisions by spending more money than the government takes in and placing additional financial burdens on everyday Americans. In the short run, this budget also cancels earlier spending reductions, instead of making some tough decisions about how to tackle our long-term fiscal challenges
Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) walked out of the memorial service for Nelson Mandela when Cuban “president” Raúl Castro began speaking. “Senator Cruz very much hopes that Castro learns the lessons of Nelson Mandela,” said Sean Rushton, Cruz’s communications director. “For decades, Castro has wrongly imprisoned and tortured countless innocents. Just as Mandela was released after 27 years in prison, Castro should finally release his political prisoners; he should hold free elections, and once and for all set the Cuban people free.” Earlier in the day, President Obama shook hands with Castro.
When I was a kid, I knew two different Santa Clauses. The first had a fat belly, rosy cheeks, a long white beard, and skin as pink as bubble gum. He was omnipresent, visiting my pre-school and the local mall, visible in all of my favorite Christmas specials. Then there was the Santa in my family’s household, in the form of ornaments, cards, and holiday figurines. A near-carbon copy of the first one—big belly, rosy cheeks, long white beard: check, check, check. But his skin was as dark as mine. Seeing two different Santas was bewildering. Eventually I asked my father what
US President Barack Obama may have moved the masses attending Nelson Mandela’s memorial service with his stirring eulogy, but it was his grinning "selfie" with the Danish and British premiers that set social networks abuzz. In a candid moment captured by a photographer, Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt can be seen holding up her smartphone, with Obama lending a helping hand, as they pose for a picture with David Cameron, all three of them smiling broadly in their seats at Soweto’s World Cup stadium.(Snip)Mashable, the news and technology website, ran the photograph under the headline: ‘‘Dear Obama: Funerals are no place
Johannesburg - A man who provided sign language interpretation on stage for Nelson Mandela´s memorial service, attended by scores of heads of state, was a "fake," the national director of the Deaf Federation of South Africa said on Tuesday. Asked about the claim by The Associated Press, South Africa´s government said it was preparing a statement. Three sign language experts said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages. South African sign language covers all of the country´s 11 official languages, according to the federation. It wasn´t immediately clear if the unidentified man was using a
On his way to the podium at the memorial ceremony for former South African president Nelson Mandela, President Obama walked down the line of dignitaries, greeting other leaders there to pay their respects. Among the hands shaken: that of Cuban leader Raul Castro. Obama neither made a special effort to shake Castro’s hand nor to avoid him. A snub might have been awkward: In his speech, Obama praised Mandela’s “greatest gift” as “his recognition that we are all bound together in ways that can be invisible to the eye; that there is a oneness to humanity; that we achieve ourselves by
The Obama State Department has finally released a second round of photos revealing the harrowing devastation wrought by a terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi on Sept. 11, 2012. The new photographs depict rampant damage to the consulate. They show charred walls, smoldering fires, Arabic graffiti defacing exterior walls, and scattered debris throughout. The extent of the damage would lead any reasonably serious person to conclude that this was a cold, calculated attack, carefully coordinated to mark the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the American people, the Obama-Clinton-Rice cabal that led to the Benghazi cover-up was
House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) snapped at conservative groups that have come out in opposition to the budget deal reached Wednesday between Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). "They´re using the American people for their own purposes. This is ridiculous," Boehner said at a press conference with other members of House Republican leadership on Wednesday. Over the past few days, a number of conservative groups have blasted the deal because it sets discretionary spending levels in the budget higher than previous levels under sequestration. In the past three days, the influential Heritage Action, Club for Growth, Americans
A black fashion student says he was brutally attacked by a gang of Hasidic men who shouted anti-gay slurs at him while he was walking through Williamsburg after a night of partying, the Daily News has learned. Taj Patterson, 22, was headed home to Fort Greene around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 when he says more than a dozen ultra-Orthodox Jewish men began assaulting him on Flushing Ave. and yelling, “Stay down, f----t!”
