California parks officials deliberately
hid money, report says

Los Angeles Times, by Chris Megerian

Sacramento - Fear of embarrassment and budget cuts led California parks officials to intentionally conceal millions of dollars in a department account, according to an investigation conducted by the state attorney general´s office. The report, released Friday, is the most detailed official narrative yet regarding the root of the accounting scandal at the parks department. The scandal broke last summer when it was revealed that the parks department had a hidden surplus of nearly $54 million even though it was threatening to close dozens of facilities. (Snip)Accounting discrepancies appeared to begin innocently more than a decade ago,

Comments:
A tangled web begun when they were "embarrassed" to disclose accounting errors. Although various staffers had requested the problem be addressed by their supervisors, it was deliberately covered up until a new deputy director, hired in January 2012, began to find out what had occurred and blew the whistle. One deputy parks director has been fired, along with the parks director who says she had no knowledge of this - even though it occurred on her "watch".

Ex-Marine general takes helm of state parks agency

SACRAMENTO — Anthony Jackson can relate to the many Californians who are furious with the state Parks Department.

The retired Marine and his wife were among the outdoor enthusiasts who dug into their pockets this year to save a beloved local park after Gov. Jerry Brown´s administration announced there was no money to keep dozens of them open. Then it turned out that parks officials had concealed tens of millions of dollars — enough to keep almost everything operating — from state bookkeepers.

Now it´s Jackson´s job to make sure nothing like that ever happens again.

They thought their scheme was unravelable. As this unfolds there might be more of this in other agencies. Check out the CHP to begin with....

FTA: Accounting discrepancies appeared to begin innocently more than a decade ago, leading to fluctuating reports on how much money was in the fund, investigators said.

How do accounting discrepancies begin innocently? Is that some kind of excuse for incompetence?

Maybe they can find enough to pay the "public servants" pensions and Free, Lifetime health care.

Don´t you just love our gov´t and "public servants"? They are so honest, work so hard and are good stewards our citizens tax dollars. Folks they are so stapped, they need more money to offer the same amount of wonderful services to our community.

Could be a strategy of self-survival. I was employed with a state department for over three decades. Every year, we were given an allotted budget for everything from salaries to computers down to pencils. We were urged yearly to "stay in the green" and spend under the allotted amount in spite of cost of supplies increasing. Each year that we came under budget, the following year, the department received several thousand dollare under the amount spent the year previous. So, as a result of trying to stay under budget and using pencils down to the nub, our department was budgeted with less and less every year. It worked until an expensive copy machine broke and it´s replacement left us without funds for computer paper the last month of the fiscal year. We finally would evaluate our budget close to the end of the fiscal year and purchased enough office equipment or supplies to push our expenditures to just under the red. It was a matter of hedging just to satisfy the bean counters in order to keep our department operating.

And yet the idiot voters in California fell for Jerry Browns line of B.S. when they recently passed proposition 30. Moombeam pontificated that it was necessary to raise taxes to save the schools (teachers union). How much more hidden money is out there? Remember this is the state that needs a high speed rail system that will run from SF to LA and cost billions of dollars. California use to be a wonderful state to live in. What happened? One word. Democrats!

Jindo, South Korea -- A passenger describes women screaming in the darkness. A father learns his child is trapped. A son, fearing death, tells his mother he loves her. Investigators haven´t said what caused a South Korean ferry boat carrying hundreds of passengers to capsize on Wednesday. But as rescuers searched frigid waters for nearly 300 missing people, text messages purporting to be from missing passengers surfaced, describing the harrowing moments after the ferry started to roll.(Snip) On Thursday, the semi-official Yonhap News Agency reported that police now believe the messages supposedly sent after the ferry sank were fake.

Obama Lets N.S.A. Exploit
Some Internet Flaws, Officials Say
New York Times, by David E. Sanger    Original Article

WASHINGTON — Stepping into a heated debate within the nation’s intelligence agencies, President Obama has decided that when the National Security Agency discovers major flaws in Internet security, it should — in most circumstances — reveal them to assure that they will be fixed, rather than keep mum so that the flaws can be used in espionage or cyberattacks, senior administration officials said Saturday. But Mr. Obama carved a broad exception for “a clear national security or law enforcement need,” the officials said, a loophole that is likely to allow the N.S.A. to continue to exploit security flaws both to crack

LAS VEGAS -- The Bureau of Land Management has announced it will stop the roundup of cattle owned by rancher Cliven Bundy. The BLM says the animals have been illegally grazing on public lands for 20 years. The BLM made the announcement Saturday morning, a week after rangers started gathering the animals from land near Gold Butte. The agency says it is concerned about the safety of its employees and the public. Earlier this week, BLM officers and supporters of the Bundy family were involved in a scuffle. Cliven Bundy´s son, Ammon Bundy, was tased twice by federal agents. Another woman said

But, as savvy Twitter users noticed almost immediately, the picture is photoshopped, and not very well at that. The right side of the book case is a mirror image of the left, which poses a slight problem. A problem I like to call “disembodied finger of a child floating in air”! President Obama addressed the White House press corps today, announcing that with the final numbers in, Obamacare´s exchanges have attracted eight million sign-ups -- 35 percent of whom are "under the age of 35," he said. Several elements of his comments were misleading: (1) At first blush, the 35 percent stat is both significant and impressive. As recently as last month, the share of "young invincibles" signing up for plans was struggling in the 25 percent range, far short of the actuarial target of nearly 40 percent. A leap into the mid-30´s, while still shy of the goal, would constitute a major step, and would bode well for the risk pools'

When it comes to tracking the cost of Obama family vacations, there are two primary challenges. First, the Obamas are prolific jet-setters, so there are many details to track. Second, the Obama administration, clearly embarrassed by these lavish and frequent family vacations, stonewalls the release of records at every turn. But we have been relentless in pursuit of this information. Our attorneys file the lawsuits and make our case, and our investigators pour through pages of records and crunch the numbers. And the information we’ve uncovered – information that would otherwise remain under lock and key – shows that the

According to the Roanoke Times, "seven multiracial students, calling themselves ´The Committee,´" have also demanded the school "acknowledge and apologize for participating in chattel slavery." They want recognition of "Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the undergraduate campus" and an end to "neo-Confederates" marching across campus "to the Lee Chapel on Lee-Jackson Day." To "honor the dignity and work of immigrants," Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi helps Bishop Marc Andrus wash the feet of two children Thursday at Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in San Francisco. Pelosi also used the occasion to talk about passing HR15 - bipartisan immigration legislation that her office says would "reduce the deficit by nearly $1 trillion, secure our borders, unite our families, protect our workers and provide an earned pathway to citizenship." The Democratic leader´s ceremony coincides with Pope Francis´ similar ceremony in Rome to mark Holy Week.

Imagine a vendor on the National Mall, selling burgers and dogs, who hasn’t paid his rent in 20 years. He refuses to recognize his landlord, the National Park Service, as a legitimate authority. Every court has ruled against him, and fines have piled up. What’s more, the effluents from his food cart are having a detrimental effect on the spring grass in the capital. Would an armed posse come to his defense, aiming their guns at the park police? Would the lawbreaker get prime airtime on Fox News, breathless updates in the Drudge Report, a sympathetic ear from Tea Party Republicans?
