Protect democracy by
fighting media consolidation

What if I told you that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was again up to its old game of encouraging more media consolidation — more broadcast outlets owned by big companies? (Snip) It surprised me, too. I thought the reconstituted commission that took control in 2009 would preserve local media and reassert the public interest in a diverse news and information ecosystem that is the foundation of our civic dialogue and, indeed, our system of self-government. After being turned down by both Congress and the federal courts in recent years for attempting to loosen the ownership rules,

Comments:
Buried deep in the editorial is his concern that by consolidating media outlets, they eventually fire employees, including many "reporters" needed to ferret out stories. But, what he doesn´t realize is that the LSM already gets its talking points daily from the dRATS-driven White House and therefore don´t need the overhead. The Internet and "citizen journalist" [think Breitbart] will be the source of truth in the future.

Support the separation of Media and State.

OP, and all LDotters for that matter, I agree with your conclusion, large media outlets can no longer be trusted. If one listens to any of the alphabets or reads any of the major dailies the repetitive sameness of the stories is frightening, the same story, same opinions, same phrases, same descriptors.

But I am always put off when anyone, especially a news source, claims ownership of "the truth". Far to often "the Truth" is simply code for "my opinion". I don´t want "the truth" in my news I just want verifiable facts and reporting.

Truth is not the black and white absolute we wish it were. One can lie as easily with true facts as with fantasy. Take todays tax debate as an example. The left states that the taxes hurt the wealthy less because the increase at 30K is 1.7% and on the wealthy its only 1.3%. That is an indisputable fact and it is also the truth.

The right says the rich will pay much more than the poor, 3000$ compared to
$200. That too is an undeniable fact and the truth.

So given two seemingly opposite stories both undeniably "the truth" what am I left with?

Just give me all the facts, and analysis that is clear and transparent, ie if you are liberal, I want to know, if you are conservative I want to know. If you claim you are "unbiased" i want to turn you off because you are lying.

Just give me that, I´ll find my own "truth".

Again the wisdom of Pres. Reagan comes to mind: ´´Trust but verify!´´

Scripture advises at least 3 witnesses to help discern the truth. ...And when considering the source, a, ´´good,´´ name is an important factor. Trust once broken is difficult to regain. Today´s statist politicians are certainly proving that point!

“He was not radical at all,” Taramov told WESH-TV. He added that the FBI had been tracking Todashev since the Boston bombings. At some point, Todashev moved to Florida. He was arrested for aggravated battery this month, according to police records, after getting into a fight with a man in a parking lot. When the FBI agent and others arrived at his apartment early Wednesday, the law enforcement officials said Todashev initially was cooperative. They said he appeared on the verge of signing a confession to the killings of three people in Waltham in September 2011.

Jerusalem - Israel´s air force chief says his troops need to be ready to act quickly in case of an attack from Syria. The remarks by Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel Wednesday echo statements by Israel´s military chief of staff a day earlier. Eshel warned escalation could lead to a "surprise war." He said Russian S-300 air defense systems are "on their way" to Syria, though Israel asked Russia not to supply them. Israel is concerned the Syrian civil war could spill across its border. Syrian and Israeli forces briefly exchanged fire on the Golan Heights border Tuesday. Israel has warned it will not tolerate fire from Syria

Amman, Jordan — The United States and its Arab and European allies will step up their support for Syria´s opposition to help them "fight for the freedom of their country" if President Bashar Assad´s regime doesn´t engage in peace talks in good faith, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry vowed Wednesday. Kerry allowed that President Barack Obama won´t send American troops to Syria. But he made clear that more aid to the rebels would be coming if the effort fails. The man shot dead by an FBI agent in Orlando, Florida early today was "about to sign a statement" admitting to a role, along with Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev, in an unsolved triple murder in Massachusetts in 2011, two people with direct knowledge of the case told ABC News. Ibragim Todashev "just went crazy," and pulled a knife during his interview with the FBI, said state and federal law enforcement officials briefed on the latest strange twist in the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing. One official said an FBI agent was stabbed several times,

An 18-year-old Florida student’s senior year has become a nightmare — all because she was in a same-sex relationship with a 15-year-old, her family says. Kaitlyn Hunt was arrested Feb. 16 for having a physical relationship with a younger classmate, who was her girlfriend at the time, mom Kelley Hunt Smith wrote on Facebook. Under Florida law, Hunt could see up to 15 years in prison and must register as a sex offender. A plea deal, however, remains on the table that would give Hunt two years´ house arrest and one year of probation, her family said. “Does my daughter deserve to lose her life for

As the impasse over Tehran’s nuclear program worsens, those most likely to be directly affected by an Iranian bomb are showing greater alarm. While the media fixates on Israel and its possible reaction, other regional players have no less at stake. Despite Riyadh’s long-held advocacy of making the Middle East a zone free of weapons of mass destruction, there has been much speculation in the past few years about the possibility of its acquiring, or developing, nuclear weapons should Tehran obtain the bomb. In the words of Saudi King Abdullah: “If Iran developed nuclear weapons (...) everyone in the

I’m running for mayor because I’ve been fighting for the middle class and those struggling to make it for my entire life.

The dam protecting the IRS scandal began to crack today when Lois Lerner, the IRS official who announced, and apologized for, the improper singling out of conservative-leaning organizations by IRS employees under her command, announced through her criminal defense lawyer that she will not testify as scheduled tomorrow before the House Oversight Committee. Rather, she will assert her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. This marks an enormous milestone in the IRS investigation. It can now be taken as more or less established that crimes were committed by Obama administration employees. Lerner’s lawyer tried to minimize the significance

The wheels came off the Obama administration yesterday. We learned of a startling assault on freedom of the press by the Department of Justice, following the revelation last week of the unprecedented information-gathering foray by that department against The Associated Press. Then, a few minutes later, the Justice Department’s inspector general released a report declaring that the US attorney in Arizona used the leak of a confidential memo to try to discredit a whistleblower in the notorious “gun-walking” scandal known as Fast and Furious (which got two federal agents killed). The leak was called “egregious.”

Taylor 3rd. Lerner was scheduled to appear before the House Oversight committee Wednesday.

Former Democratic National committee chairman Howard Dean considers the controversy over Benghazi a “joke” and “silly.” “Benghazi is a laughable joke,” Dean proclaimed twice in a discussion with Republican National Committee communications chairman Sean Spicer last week. “With all due respect, governor, when four Americans die serving this country, that’s not a joke, sir,” Spicer responded. “Oh, stop it,” said Dean. The former Democratic presidential candidate also said that there were “no serious questions being asked about Benghazi” and brushed it off as an effort by Republicans to score political points.

While many Americans were tuned into news coverage of the massive damage from tornadoes ravaging the state of Oklahoma, Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse took to the Senate floor to rail against his Republican colleagues for denying the theory of anthropogenic global warming. Whitehouse spent 15 minutes chastising GOP senators and justified his remarks by alluding to states that seek federal assistance in the wake of natural disasters. “So, you may have a question for me,” Whitehouse said. “Why do you care?
