BAKER – There´s a new thermometer on the market. But it´s unlikely to fit under your tongue. The 134-foot landmark in Baker, billed as the world´s largest thermometer, has been put up for sale. The asking price: $1.75 million. The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday the price includes the now vacant gift shop at the base and 4 acres around it. Erected in the sweltering city in 1991, the thermometer with nearly 5,000 light bulbs was intended as beacon for motorists headed to and from Las Vegas on I-15.

One of those quirky kind of landmarks you find only in Southern California. I remember driving past at 7 PM one evening: 105 degrees.

At least we´re all on the same page here.

I had in mind a special gift for Zippy.

This could go on the White House lawn in place of a Holiday Tree.

Once the heat is on...
Zippy can sit on it.

This would address concerns by all previous posters here.

Plus it would be fun to see.
Up to a point, anyway.
Ewwwwww... we might add.

Stopped there once in September to get some gas. The temp was a balmy 114, and these two idiots ahead of us were staring at the gas pump like it was some kind of alien. I had to keep my car running to keep the air conditioner going for the cat we were transporting cross-country to our new duty station. The temp gauge was climbing past "Solar Surface", when I finally got out of my car and asked the two buffoons if I could help. They were tourists from come foreign land, and I pumped their gas in no time flat. I also seem to recall on the trip out of Baker east on 15 towards Vegas you are advised to turn off your car´s A/C to prevent overheating. I didn´t and we survived...

Maryland’s bathroom bill benefits few
transgenders, puts all girls at risk

Maryland moms and dads will now have to be more vigilant when their children use public bathrooms. It will soon be legal for a man who simply says he identifies as a woman to use the ladies’ room. This serious risk for sexual assaults of women and little girls is all in the name of political correctness. And this is just the latest in a string of successes by the transgender lobby. (Snip) The most dangerous impact of this new law is that a man cannot be stopped from going into a women’s bathroom, locker room or pool changing room.

A former State Department arms expert who leaked classified information to a Fox News reporter was sentenced Wednesday to 13 months in prison after a pointed courtroom debate about the Obama administration’s aggressive pursuit of unauthorized disclosures of top-secret information. Stephen Jin-Woo Kim pleaded guilty in February to sharing classified information from an intelligence report on North Korea with reporter James Rosen, Fox’s chief Washington correspondent. (Snip) Under President Obama, the Justice Department has pursued more leak cases than all previous administrations combined.

A divided federal appeals court has struck down California´s concealed weapons rules, saying they violate the Second Amendment right to bear arms. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Thursday that California is wrong to require applicants to show good cause to receive a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The court ruled that all law-abiding citizens are entitled to carry concealed weapons outside the home for self-defense purposes. The divided three-judge panel disagreed with two other federal appeals courts that have upheld permit rules similar to California´s.

Critics said Saturday that the latest problem to hit Maryland´s online health exchange — an incorrect help-line number that directed hundreds of callers to a Seattle-based pottery business — was another symptom of the poorly operating website. (snip) The calls to Sue Lunz´s pottery supply company in Seattle started in the fall, after Maryland´s site was repaired enough for people to begin navigating through it. As more people reached a page where a technical problem made it impossible to select a provider, they started calling the incorrect help-line number. Lunz said her business continued to receive calls Saturday.

Treasury to sell last GM shares from
auto bailout. How´d taxpayers fare?

The Treasury Department is finally getting out of the automotive business, five years after interceding to rescue the US industry from apparent annihilation at the onset of the Great Recession. On Thursday, it announced it sold 70.2 million shares of General Motors (GM) stock and intends to sell its remaining 31.1 million shares by Dec. 31. Once the final sale is complete, however, US taxpayers will have lost nearly $10 billion of the $49.5 billion the federal government used to prevent the auto giant from collapsing in 2008, Treasury officials say.

Neurosurgeon Ben Carson says the White House wanted him to apologize for “offending” President Obama after he famously delivered a conservative message at the National Prayer Breakfast last year. Carson, the former director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, recalls the events surrounding his 2013 speech in his new book, One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future. The Daily Caller obtained an advance copy of the book, which is set for release May 20. “He did not appear to be hostile or angry,” Carson writes of Obama, “but within a matter of minutes after the conclusion of

Megyn Kelly’s "Kelly File" is a great news show. She’s incisive, informed and customarily handles the toughest guest with aplomb. But her lengthy interview of Facebook C.O.O. Sheryl Sandberg about her second book in the Lean In series Lean In: For Graduates was a head shaker. Amazing that she of all people allowed Sandberg to restring the same old, same old, shamed, and shopworn feminist myths about women and girls and then jangle it in front of her viewing audience like something new out of the box. Indeed Kelly all but genuflected in front of this woman. Kept her on thru

On Saturday, I wrote about the standoff at Bundy Ranch. That post drew a remarkable amount of traffic, even though, as I wrote then, I had not quite decided what to make of the story. Since then, I have continued to study the facts and have drawn some conclusions. Here they are. First, it must be admitted that legally, Bundy doesn’t have a leg to stand on. The Bureau of Land Management has been charging him grazing fees since the early 1990s, which he has refused to pay. Further, BLM has issued orders limiting the area on which Bundy’s cows can

Less than a minute into his speech at the Boston marathon bombing memorial on Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden went tragically off script and told the crowd of Boston bombing survivors that "it was worth it." After expressing how impressed he was with the tribute, he said somberly, "let me say to those ´quote survivors,´ my God, you have survived and you have soared. It was worth it. I mean this sincerely - just to hear each of you speak. You´re truly, truly inspiring." The audience sat in stunned silence until Biden declared, "I´ve never heard anything so beautiful than

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Like him or hate him, there is no disputing that Rush Limbaugh’s very special brand of mixing right-wing politics with his flare for entertainment has produced one of the most successful radio programs in the medium’s long history. Whatever the burning political question of the day, millions of Americans have relished the opportunity to tune into Rush’s program, knowing that he would quickly take that hot potato, throw a few gallons of verbal kerosene into the mix and elevate the matter into a five alarm fire with a just a few well-chosen words spoken in the style only Rush Limbaugh could

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you
