| As Hugo Chavez´s reign in Venezuela appears to come to an end, oil markets guru Stephen Schork says the 13-year president deprived his country the fruits of the insane oil price surge that´s occurred since he came to power. "Chavez’s march down the road to serfdom squandered the greatest oil rally in history," he writes. It all goes back to 2002, when a national strike led by the PdVSA — the country´s state oil company, which had been an anti-Chavez entity — caused production to drop from just below 3.0 MMb/d to just above 0.6 MMb/d.

Hugo may have been a big part of the reason there was an oil rally. His policies suppressed supply - and artificially increased demand from economic back-waters like Cuba. If the bus driver VP is a closet centrist as some folks opine, we may see in his policy reversals (and along with new fracking techniques) the ingredients for a long slow decline in oil prices - maybe down to $55 a barrel.
Once Argentina gets rids of that bizarre, term-limited woman they call President we may see similar effects from that country.

I can´t wait till Brazil and Colombia get pumping. Both have high potential and a willingness to drill. Brazil in particular wants to be the oil big dog on the continent. They, and Canada, will make Hugo´s oil obsolete.

A communists number one job in life is squandering money. With the poverty and crime in Venezuela,it doesn´t appear ole Hugo did a very good job of spreading the wealth around.
Communism is one of the biggest false promises ever created by man and the only people who really benefit from it is the top tier. Think about how open Obama is with squandering money and it tells you he´s a full bred commie.
No sooner than the ink was dry on the cliff deal,he was promising more tax increases on the rich to keep his base with their hands out into eternity.
If he could get rid of congress, think about how generous he would be then. Or the erasure of the debt ceiling.

Yegor Borisov, head of the Sakha Republic, a vast and sparsely populated region of eastern Siberia, has called for an urgent cull of wolves after the predators swamped populated areas in a search for food. The local government has announced a three month "battle against wolves" to be launched on January 15. Special task forces will be put together and the hunting season extended all year round in a bid to tackle what the local authorities have described as a "mass migration" of the creatures. The governor has even promised a six-figure cash prize for the hunters who bring back the most skins.

After days of demonstrations, described as "legitimate" by Dilma Rousseff, Brazil´s president, activists filled the streets in more than a dozen cities, including those hosting matches at next year´s football tournament, which is estimated to cost £10 billion. In scenes rarely seen in Brazil since the fall of the dictatorship in 1985, crowds took to the streets, carrying placards reading: "World Cup for Who?" and "We don´t need the World Cup". President Rousseff responded with sympathy for the protesters. "Today, Brazil woke up stronger," she said. "The greatness of yesterday´s demonstrations proved the power of democracy.

As many as 200,000 demonstrators marched through the streets of Brazil´s biggest cities on Monday in a swelling wave of protest tapping into widespread anger at poor public services, police violence and government corruption. The marches, organized mostly through snowballing social media campaigns, blocked streets and halted traffic in more than a half-dozen cities, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Brasilia, where demonstrators climbed onto the roof of Brazil´s Congress building and then stormed it. Monday´s demonstrations were the latest in a flurry of protests in the past two weeks that have added

Stars. They’re not like you! Ryan Lizza’s New Yorker piece on the Gang of 8´s immigration efforts [behind paywall] contains a seemingly inflammatory quote from an unnamed aide to Marco Rubio: “‘There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it,’ a Rubio aide told me. ‘There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. And so you can’t obviously discuss that publicly.’” It’s a bad enough quote that Gang-of-8 cheerleader Jonathan Chait was worried.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio´s (R-Fla.) office sparked a bit of a firestorm on Sunday when a quote attributed to one of his aides claimed that immigration reform is necessary because some American workers "just can´t cut it." The aide made the comment to The New Yorker´s Ryan Lizza in an article published early Monday morning, explaining why Rubio sided with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on the issue of a guest-worker program for the construction industry. “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it,” the Rubio aide told Lizza.

Elections: Iran-watchers and, for that matter, Iran´s voters, were ecstatic at the surprise election of an apparent moderate to Iran´s presidency Friday. But hold the celebration: Hassan Rowhani still answers to the mullahs. Iran´s voters stunned Tehran´s hard-liners as results of the presidential election showed Rowhani, a supposedly moderate Muslim cleric, winning with 50.71% of the vote with a record 73% turnout. The margin was high enough to avoid a runoff, and was a sweet victory for all the Iranians who were crushed during the Green Revolution of 2009, the protest movement around the last election in Iran

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday said he would offer an amendment to the Senate immigration bill to counteract a Supreme Court decision striking down state laws requiring voters to prove their citizenship. Cruz´s amendment, which he plans to attach to the bipartisan Gang of Eight bill being debated this week in the Senate, would allow states to require IDs before voters register under the federal "Motor Vehicle" voter registration law. The high court on Monday overturned an Arizona law requiring people to prove their citizenship if they wanted to register through that law.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

As NewsBusters reported last week, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin called out vulgarian comedian Bill Maher for referring to her Down Syndrome son Trig as "retarded." On ABC´s The View Monday, co-host Barbara Walters astonishingly defended Maher saying, "I don´t think he intended it to be mean-spirited" (video follows with transcript and commentary): WHOOPI GOLDBERG: At a recent standup show in Las Vegas, comedian Bill Maher apparently called Sarah Palin’s five-year-old developmentally-challenged son Trig retarded. And Sarah blasted him on Twitter as a bully. Is that, is it, is he a bully? Is he a bad, what is he?

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Jeb Bush says he’s not worried that his work toward comprehensive immigration reform and his ties to the GOP establishment will alienate conservatives and negatively impact a potential 2016 presidential campaign, referring to critics as “the chirpers.” “If I decide to run for office again, it will be based on what I believe, and it will be based on my record,” the former Florida governor said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody. “And that record was one of solving problems completely from a conservative prospective.” Bush (R) pointed to his conservative

Politico’s Playbook has an excerpt from a new Ryan Lizza piece from the New Yorker that is not yet online. It contains a passage on the back-and-forth between labor and the Chamber that has a quote from a Rubio staffer that is going to raise eyebrows, to say the least: “There are American workers who, for lack of a better term, can’t cut it. There shouldn’t be a presumption that every American worker is a star performer. There are people who just can’t get it, can’t do it, don’t want to do it. Iran is preparing to send 4,000 troops in to Syria to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the wake of America´s announcement it will be providing ´military aid´ to the country´s Muslim rebels. President Barack Obama made the pledge earlier this week after the U.S. claimed it found ´conclusive evidence´ Assad´s regime has used chemical weapons against the rebel forces--which includes the most extreme Sunni Islamists--and has called for Britain and France to back the move. While Britain hasn´t made a guarantee either way as yet, more than 350 Royal Marines are being sent to Jordan
