Does the Left really
want to end poverty?

The poverty lobby--as opposed to those who actually want to put an end to poverty--uses the "poor" as a political weapon in its ideological war against the market economy. That argument, which many of us have made over the years, is forcefully reiterated in an excellent post by Philip Booth of the IEA. As Professor Booth points out, the official campaigning groups which make use of the poor as fodder for their anti-capitalist rhetoric never seem to address the critical issue of the cost of living in their accounts of relative poverty, even though excessive charges for home energy, child

Nice article. Seems the UK has its own version of the Earned Income Tax Credit, which in the US serves as one component of the corporate welfare ladled out to chain retailers and fast-food restaurants, which pay artificially low wages because "the government" supplements paychecks with income tax credits, food stamps, rent subsidies, Medicaid, and the rest.

FTA: "Nor can I recall them campaigning for tax cuts on the low paid: instead of allowing people to keep more of their earnings which would relieve their hardship and give them more independence, they clamour for the continuation of tax credits which subsidise (and perpetuate) low wages, and foster dependence on the state."

If you are willing to have nothing, being poor is very lucrative. The more children out of wedlock, the richer you are. Then IRS rewards you again. Not everyone aspires to be Julia with an Affirmative Action job.

Unfortunately, the ´newly impoverished´ from unemployment or the elderly will be thrown under the bus with the professionally poor and professional liars.

The Left wants to end poverty as much as it wants to end "racism" and "sexism" - that is, not at all. On the contrary, the Left must fabricate and multiply the number of its designated victim groups. Free, prosperous people deprive the Left of its power.

Reply 5 - Posted by: 4Justice, 1/4/2013 1:41:02 AM     (No. 9097609)

#4 is correct. The left uses people. They don´t care about anyone but themselves and the power and wealth they can accumulate at everyone else´s expense. The left has only made the poor poorer. I tried to explain this to my lefty friends but they just don´t get it. They are so stuck in their beliefs that they can´t see the truth even when you spell it out for them. They really believe poor and minorities are better off now than before LBJ´s social programs were implemented.

Does a butcher really want to end meat?

I´ve read somewhere that these ´poverty´ people enjoy benefits up to $60,000. So much for ´poverty´.

Think of the left as "poverty pimps". They use the poor to extract and extort money from the taxpaying Johns. And there us no way they can let the poor get out of poverty because that will be the end of their con game.

Reply 10 - Posted by: Sfacheem, 1/4/2013 6:37:38 AM     (No. 9097746)

Of course not. Here´s what the left wants:

They want to create a socialist "caste" system in which they live like millionaires because they are well-compensated for their invaluable contributions to society, while all the "common" people work all day and get exactly what they need.

Reply 11 - Posted by: mickturn, 1/4/2013 9:02:12 AM     (No. 9098001)

Simple answer is NO...poverty let´s the pimps keep up the game and get rich. Solving problems isn´t a Left agenda item, perpetuating the problem so they can whine about it is.

Prosperous people are harder to control. They won´t look at you in awe and take in everything you say with the critical thinking abilities of three-year-olds.

Poor people are desperate to survive. If you´re the sole source of their food, shelter and clothing, you can be a god to them. Think Kim Jong Il´s son.

A theater critic is unrepentant after he quite literally took the law into his own hands and smashed the cellphone of another patron who refused to stop using it during a performance on Wednesday night. Kevin Williamson, a writer for the National Review, was attending a performance of ´Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812,´ described as an ‘electro-pop opera’ based on ‘War and Peace’ and playing in New York at Kazino, a temporary structure beside The Standard Hotel. Writing about the incident on the National Review’s website, Williamson said he recommended the show but thought the audience

President Barack Obama has revealed the US has seen evidence of chemical weapons being used in Syria. His announcement comes as Russia sends in advanced missiles to Syria in a move that highlights the depth of its support for President Bashar al-Assad. Following a meeting with Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Mr Obama insisted it was important to get more specific details about alleged chemical attacks. Last year Obama and Western leaders warned Syria that using chemical weapons would be crossing a ´red line.´ If the latest claims are correct it could lead to greater Western military involvement in the

In an age of terrorism, we have become used to seeing armed police at major railway stations and airports, or guarding other potential targets such as embassies. But when officers with guns are needed to patrol the streets of an English town because of an upsurge in gang shootings, it seems we have reached something of a watershed in our national life. The images of paramilitary-style policemen with assault rifles escorting parents and children to school in Luton are a shocking confirmation that law and order has collapsed in parts of our country. In the past four months, there have

The Ukip leader Nigel Farage has condemned the "fascist scum" who forced him to take refuge in an Edinburgh pub and hung up on a BBC Scotland interview over outrage at the "hatred" in its questioning. The leader of the UK Independence Party said the "excesses of Scottish nationalism" can be "pretty ugly" and "deeply unpleasant" after he was surrounded and hassled by hardline demonstrators yesterday. [Snip] Asked about how many elected representatives he has in Scotland, Mr Farage said: "Absolutely none, but rather more than the BBC. We could have had this interview in England a couple of years

Even though he is the commander in chief, there are some orders that even President Obama cannot give - as he found out today, much to the chagrin of a put-upon U.S. Marine. Hosting Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Rose Garden today, the president requested a standing Marine to open an umbrella and protect his head from the light rain that was falling. However, according to Marine Corps regulations, not even the President of the United States can request a Marine to carry an umbrella without the express permission of the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

It’s lasted four years, but President Obama’s political honeymoon is finally over. He had his share of troubles during the first term, but at least his character seemed beyond reproach. For most of the public he represented real, historic change: not just the first black president, but a president determined to restore moral principle to the White House. It also helped that parts of the American press appeared lovestruck. The news broadcaster Chris Matthews once said that hearing Obama speak sent "a thrill going up my leg". Now the thrill is gone. Just five months into his second term

This has been a nightmare week for Barack Obama, without a doubt the worst of his presidency so far. [Snip] Holder was simply unable or unwilling to answer most key questions, and demonstrated a level of contempt for elected officials in Congress that was breathtaking. It was yet another public relations disaster for the Obama team. In addition the administration has come under heavy fire over the Justice Department’s monitoring of phone records belonging to Associated Press journalists. All this has combined to create a perfect storm in the first year of Obama’s second term, a wave of scandals

Watching President Obama trying to dodge raindrops and responsibility yesterday reminded me of the moment when Dorothy pulls back the curtain and discovers that the Wizard of Oz is “just a man.” Stripped of his spell of mystery and power, the wizard is worse than mortal. He’s a fake. So it was with Obama in the Rose Garden. His performance was tired and trite, ordinary to the point of dull. His veneer of passion was so transparent that you could see him trying to summon his old-time magic by pushing the buttons

STANDING BEFORE reporters Thursday, President Obama declined an invitation to compare the recent scandals weighing down his administration with those that forced President Nixon to resign in 1974. So allow us to do the work for him: There is no comparison. Nixon, in a series of crimes that collectively came to be known as Watergate, directed from the White House and Justice Department a concerted campaign against those he perceived as political enemies, in the process subverting the FBI, the IRS, other government agencies and the electoral process to his nefarious purposes. Mr. Obama has done nothing of the kind.

The State Department, under Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, created an arrangement for her longtime aide and confidante Huma Abedin to work for private clients as a consultant while serving as a top adviser in the department. Ms. Abedin did not disclose the arrangement — or how much income she earned — on her financial report. It requires officials to make public any significant sources of income. An adviser to Mrs. Clinton, Philippe Reines, said that Ms. Abedin was not obligated to do so. The disclosure of the agreement that Ms. Abedin made with the State Department comes as her husband,

The White House on Wednesday released 94 pages of emails between top administration and intelligence officials who helped shape the talking points about the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, that the CIA would provide to policymakers in both the legislative and executive branches. The documents, first reported by THE WEEKLY STANDARD in articles here and here, directly contradict claims by White House press secretary Jay Carney and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that the revisions of those talking points were driven by the intelligence community and show heavy input from top Obama administration officials, particularly those at the State Department.

On Thursday´s NBC Today, in a desperate attempt to deflect from the scandals engulfing the Obama administration, co-host Savannah Guthrie wondered: "I read a headline yesterday that said Republicans see blood in the water. That they see a president who´s very vulnerable politically. Is there a danger that they will overreach?" Chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd agreed with the slanted premise: "There is. I mean, that´s what happened to Republicans in 1998 with Bill Clinton.

President Obama’s press conference in the rain was not a success, if by success, his supporters would mean an event which convinces anyone who doesn’t work for him that he’s getting ahead of the scandal deluge. The sight of a Marine holding an umbrella over his head only added to the weirdness of the event. So what did we learn? 1. He has full confidence in Attorney General Eric Holder, the man who purportedly recused himself (whenever) without putting it in writing (whatever). When asked about the untrammeled snooping on Associated Press reporters and editors,

“I look forward to taking some questions at tomorrow’s press conference,” President Obama said last night, after announcing the resignation of the acting IRS commissioner Steven Miller. The president scheduled a noon press conference today with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in honor of his visit. Reporters, however, found themselves waiting outside in the rain for Obama, who was 47 minutes late. Only New York Times reporter Mark Landler had an umbrella.
