| JASPER, Ala. — Federal authorities said Friday a student pilot wasn´t following regulations when he took off with two friends on a late-night flight New Year´s Day that crashed in north Alabama and killed everyone aboard. Federal Aviation Administration records show that the pilot, 17-year-old Jordan Ryan Smith of Jasper, received a student pilot certificate in February 2012. On Thursday, the FAA pointed to regulations that say "a student pilot may not act as pilot in command of an aircraft that is carrying a passenger."

Student pilot, no multi engine rating, at night, terrible weather with low ceilings, passengers. What else could go wrong. He wanted to fly but couldn´t wait.
That´s why the poem starts, "Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of earth."
And the rest of this beautiful poem by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.:

An early candidate for the 2013 Darwin award... maybe 2 more candidates, if they were aware the "pilot" had no license, but the student pilot shoulda known better. Probably all 3 were good kids, slackers don´t take up flying; a terrible waste of these young lives.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State University President Gordon Gee abruptly announced his retirement Tuesday after he came under fire for jokingly referring to ``those damn Catholics´´ at Notre Dame and poking fun at the academic quality of other schools. The remarks were first reported last week by The Associated Press, and Ohio State at the time called them unacceptable and said it had placed Gee on a ``remediation plan´´ to change his behavior.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The president of Ohio State University could be fired for any more verbal gaffes, trustees told him in a letter that said his mockery of Notre Dame, Roman Catholics and the Southeastern Conference have embarrassed and divided the university and run the risk of diminishing the effectiveness of its efforts. Trustees warned Gordon Gee that comments or actions he makes detracting from Ohio State´s core values are not productive and are unacceptable, according to a copy of the March 11 letter obtained Friday by The Associated Press.

As Americans prepare for Memorial Day—the official kickoff to a summer grilling season of burgers and T-bones—rising beef prices have some consumers balking in the grocery aisles. DENVER - A group of Colorado sheriffs unhappy with recent gun control laws are planning to file a lawsuit to block them. The sheriffs have called a Friday morning news conference to detail their federal challenge. The lawmen said they would challenge two new laws, one limiting the size of ammunition magazines and another law to expand gun background checks. The laws were passed earlier this year in response to mass shootings in Aurora and at a school in Connecticut. Not all sheriffs opposed the bills, but some were frequent visitors to the state Capitol in an effort to prevent the gun controls.

Washington - Boston Mayor Tom Menino says information he has indicates that the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing acted alone. Menino tells ABC's "This Week" that he agreed with the decision to lock down Boston all day Friday, based on information officials had at the time. But their path to enacting gun curbs this year seems blocked by the National Rifle Association, and supporters of restrictions appear befuddled about what it will take to push legislation through this Congress. Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.
