Falklands row: Islanders respond in detail
to points raised by Cristina Kirchner

It is disappointing that today the Government of Argentina is once again ignoring the rights and wishes of the Falkland Islands people. The open letter sent by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to David Cameron is not only historically inaccurate, but fails to mention the most significant aspect of our recent history--the attempt by the Argentine Government to take away our home by military force when they invaded thirty years ago.[Snip] The Falkland Islands had no indigenous population prior to their settlement by our ancestors--the Islands were unoccupied. Argentina claims the Falkland Islands form part of the province of

Is it not questionable that the current British government likely lacks the will to go to war with Argentina over these islands? The welfare system in Britain has crippled the nation.

England is going to suffer a humiliation.

A useful distraction from the massive failure of the "socialist" Argentine state, just like last time. Nothing like an external hated enemy to stir up the citizens and get them to forget domestic troubles - like a serious inflation and erosion of civil liberties.

Yeah, Kirchner is just yelling "squirrel" out to sea, to keep the homeys from meditating on the shambles she has wrought.

Replace Argentina with America and Falkland Islands with the American people and you pretty much sum up the Obama admin as well.

#1, my feeling is that the UK will go to war over the Falklands if necessary. There is a garrison on the island; the islanders regularly train with the soldiers; a submarine or two is usually lurking; and the UK´s latest destroyer, the first of the Type 45s named HMS Daring, is now past four years of trials and ready for trouble.

Wikipedia has a fairly good description of Daring.

Dittoes, #4.

The UK may be a dieing and decadent society, but if they can muster the will in their socialist paradise...I think they can still kick the Argies´ butts.

As an item of interest, in ´89-90 I was a student at the USMC Command and Staff College, where we had an Argentine Naval (Counter-guerilla) guy, and an British officer. They were polite to each other, but not friends. I became friends with the Argentine (because of my own expertise in guerilla and counter-guerilla war), and asked him once about the war. "It was stupid," he told me. "We didn´t need those islands, and it was a stupid war. We lost, and that´s that." All in all, he took it pretty well, I suppose. He kept telling me (we had him and his family over for dinner a couple times), when I retired I should move to Argentina; I could live like a king (MUCH lower prices). Gotta admit, it sounded tempting, but unstable political situations always worry me. :-)

This letter is totally beside the point. Argentina is in a total social, economic, and cultural shambles. To survive, the government must present an emotional distraction; the Falklands is an excellent selection to keep the subjects preoccupied.

Their (Argie and Brit) cool politeness was downright friendly compared to the Israeli officer and the various Arab country students. But the rules were clear: We were there as professionals, and would maintain ourselves that way. Though it was obviously a strain for them all sometimes.

Please excuse another post--have just posted another piece on the Falklands and it contains this important bit of info (among many others):

Britain has four warships, four RAF fighter-bombers and a 1,000-strong garrison on the Falklands. . . .

http://www.lucianne.com/thread/?artnum=717575

That would seem sufficient to hold off an attack to allow reinforcements to arrive (not forgetting one or two submarines), given that Argentina doesn´t have much of a military left. I´m sure each time Kirchner opens her mouth certain units are put on high alert.

Surge protection plan will keep lights

A vast tract of the East Coast, from Washington DC to New York is in danger of being without power for up to two years, if a massive solar flare knocks out the power grid. With the Sun pushing out unusually large solar flares, capable of disrupting power supplies, a device is being proposed that would prevent more than 300 million Americans being left without power. House Republicans have proposed legislation to push the Government to provide surge protectors and grid-saving devices that would offer protection in case of a massive electromagnetic pulse from either a flare or nuclear weapon.

Michelle Obama and her daughters were joined by the President´s half-sister Auma on Tuesday as the group made a sombre tour of the Holocaust memorial in Berlin. The First Lady, Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11, bowed their heads and listened carefully to the words of a tour guide. Michelle looked lost in thought as she wandered through the vast site while Malia appeared deeply moved and reached out to touch the stones. The Obamas are in Germany for a two-day visit and while the President meets with leader Angela Merkel, his wife and daughters visited the Memorial to the

Afghanistan suspends talks
after US-Taliban move
BBC News [UK], by staff    Original Article

Afghanistan has suspended talks with the US to discuss the nature of US military presence after foreign troops withdraw in 2014. A spokesman for President Hamid Karzai said the decision was taken over "contradictions" in the US proposal of direct talks with the Taliban. Mr Karzai also ruled out talking to the Taliban until the peace process was "Afghan-led". Earlier, four US soldiers died in a Taliban attack at an Afghan air base. A spokesman for the Taliban said the militants had launched two rockets at Bagram airbase, the largest military base for US troops in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan: Watch what the Taliban

You don´t need to know much about Afghanistan, the nature of extremist movements or world affairs in general to understand one important principle: Never mind what they say, what are they doing? So while last night the Afghan Taliban released a statement (carefully co-ordinated with the White House) expressing their commitment to finding a political solution to Afghanistan´s conflict, this morning we wake to news that they launched a mortar attack on Bagram air base last night, killing four Americans. [Snip] The problem is that the US is negotiating not from a position of strength but a position of weakness.

Whither the weather? As you may have heard, a conference of national forecasters assembled this week in Exeter: to discuss the future of the British climate, following the spate of harsher than expected winters, and unusually wet summers, since 2007. Already, commentators are asking if global warming is to blame. In particular, some are wondering if the direction of the Jet Stream is being altered by Arctic ice melt. Others are speculating that natural variations, such as the “Atlantic multi-decadal oscillation”, might be responsible for recent evolutions. However, most of this reportage has been second-hand. Unprecedentedly, I had direct access

Yesterday´s surprise announcement by President Barack Obama that America is to engage in direct talks with the Taliban is a welcome and long overdue development in the decade-long Afghan conflict. As I and others have argued for many years, there is no military solution to the Afghan conflict, even if the sustained military effort--which has so far cost in excess of 3,000 Nato lives--has been necessary to force the Taliban to the negotiating table. Without the relentless military pressure provided by American, British and other Nato forces these past few years, I very much doubt that the Taliban would

It might seem like the androgynous fashion trend taken too far, but a Chinese company’s new ‘hairy leg’ hosiery hopes to help women ward off unwanted male attention. A photograph posted to the Shanghai-based website ChinaSMACK shows a model from the waist down wearing the on-trend stockings. A caption below touts them as the perfect ´summertime anti-pervert´ device and ´essential for young girls going out’. It does not state where shoppers can find the garment and internet searches prove fruitless. The image of the tights has triggered hundreds of responses from amused and horrified viewers. ‘Damn, so disgusting!’ commented one.

A group of whistleblowers, including a number of aviation experts, have come forward in a new documentary to claim that the official explanation for the crash of TWA Flight 800 was wrong and a gas tank explosion did not bring down the flight off the coast of Long Island 17 years ago. However, the six whistleblowers, all part of the original investigation team, stopped short of saying the plane was shot down. Flight 800, a Boeing 747, had just taken off from JFK airport with 230 people aboard on July 17, 1996 enroute to Paris when it exploded

An attorney whose firm represents two Benghazi whistleblowers said Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, lied to the Senate when he said there was never a “stand down” order during the Benghazi attack on Sept. 11, 2012. “What was fascinating is that he explained his lie to them,” Joe DiGenova, an attorney representing one of the whistleblowers, told CNSNews.com. “He actually said they were sent to Tripoli. They were needed in Benghazi,” said DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney, now with the Washington firm of DiGenova & Toensing.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Listening to Barack Obama give his speech in Belfast on Monday, it was hard not to stifle a yawn. I kept waiting for the part when he would say something interesting, but, about three quarters of the way through, realised it wasn’t going to come. Judging from television pictures some of his young audience felt the same, after the initial rush of euphoria of receiving the rock star president in their midst had passed. This is not surprising, for we had already heard this number about the inspirational role of the Northern Ireland peace process and the Emerald Isle’s

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.

The Obamas never miss an opportunity to mingle with the stars and during a two-day trip in Dublin, who better to have lunch with than iconic Irish rocker and philanthropist Bono? First Lady Michelle along with daughters Malia, 14, and Sasha, 11, started Tuesday with an hour-long visit to picturesque Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains--but the two girls looked like they would have rather slept in at their luxury hotel. Glendalough is famous for its Medieval monastic settlement founded in the 6th century by St Kevin, the hermit priest. After appearing less than thrilled on Monday while viewing Medieval manuscripts
