A 19-year-old woman accidentally shot dead her brother while posing with a gun for Facebook photos on New Year´s Eve. Manuel Ortiz died instantly after being shot in the head at about 6am on Monday morning. Family and friends wept as his body was carried from his apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, where the shooting took place. Police said 22-year-old Ortiz and his sister Savannah Ramirez arrived back at the home they shared on New Year’s Eve after spending the night drinking. They were with two other people when someone in the group pulled out the handgun to take photos with it.

It´s a good thing she shot her dead brother. Otherwise, she would be in trouble.

To "shoot dead" someone is a Brit construction. Move past it to the story.

Drunks should not be playing with loaded guns.

...sad, but I get the feeling that these are not your typical responsible, well-trained gun owners. Dims will see stories like these as ammo (sorry) for gun control. I propose lunatic control and now possibly ´wannabe gansta control´.

In times gone by, stupidity, ignorance, outlawry, and insanity were rewarded with early death. Now, our safety net is so thick that natural selection has been subverted, except in this particular case. Chainsaws make better toys than guns in the hands of drunks.

Put a gun in the hands of someone who isn´t used to handling them, and their finger will IMMEDIATELY go to the trigger. Further, the only responsible way to hand a gun to someone is with the magazine removed and the chamber open to show it is not loaded AFTER sticking your finger in the chamber and the barrel to confirm your visual inspection. Alcohol, loaded weapons, inexperienced users....whoever owned that weapon and allowed it to be passed around has at lot to answer for.

Before the trolls jump in, note that they bore the price for their own irresponsibility. None of my guns were involved, so banning them wont help.

On Sunday December 17, 2012, 2 days after the CT shooting, a man went to a
restaurant in San Antonio to kill his X-girlfriend. After he shot her, most of
the people in the restaurant fled next door to a theater. The gunman followed
them and entered the theater so he could shoot more people. He started shooting
and people in the theater started running and screaming. It’s like the Aurora,
CO theater story plus a restaurant!

Now aren’t you wondering why this wasn’t a lead story in the national media
along with the school shooting?

There was an off duty county deputy at the theater. SHE pulled out her gun and
shot the man 4 times before he had a chance to kill anyone. So since this story
makes the point that the best thing to stop a bad person with a gun is a good
person with a gun, the media is treating it like it never happened.

Rules for gun handlers number 1 through number 10. Never ever ever handle a gun while or after drinking. Rule #11, never ever ever put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to immediately shoot the gun. Rules #12 through #20, never ever ever aim a gun at anyone unless you INTEND to shoot them. See, twenty simple rules that any responsible gun owner knows and follows and that this idiot failed to follow.

Where is the mother saying, "they are such nice kids. He was my baby!"(Not much point in asking about the father). Well, we know they are/were stupid kids. They are the welfare culture we are producing. We´re just lucky in this instance they killed each other instead of someone that would have grown up and contributed something to society. A sad thing but these are dead end stupid people. The truth hurts.

Reply 45 - Posted by: mominNoCA, 1/3/2013 5:00:55 PM     (No. 9097036)

Confusing headline for a tragic story. One can infer she shot her brother´s corpse.

I don´t want to make light of this, however. In far too many urban areas and their neighboring towns, thug elements like to celebrate the new year by shooting their guns randomly and otherwise playing with them. It´s no fun to do this, of course, unless they´re drunk, high or both. Stories like this are the result.

If there hadn´t been a photo of this, this woman may not have been arrested. No one around her would want to snitch, you know.

Reply 46 - Posted by: veritas, 1/3/2013 6:12:54 PM     (No. 9097143)

#36: You are welcome.

#37: Not "technically correct," but correct. The fact that this particular correct usage is more common in Britain than here is mere happenstance.

Consider: if it read "accidentally shoots
brother in the head" the question of whether he lived is open. The headline´s use of "shoots dead" closes that issue. The construction is therefore not simply correct, but superior to typical American practice.

It´s "a cliché" to say that America "is the greatest country on Earth," Pres. Obama told a DNC event in New York City on Monday. "And more than anything, what I will be striving for over the next three and a half years is to see if that spirit that I saw in Boston and West, Texas, if we can institutionalize that, if we can create a framework where everybody is working together and moving this country forward. A high school student is fighting back after her senior photo was pulled from the school yearbook. The photo shows North Carolina senior Caitlin Tiller holding her now one-year old son. The school asked students to have their picture taken with something that best represents them or an achievement. Tiller chose her son because he represented her drive to stay in school. The school didn´t see it that way. Caitlin says she was told the picture promoted teen pregnancy. She sees it as a symbol of responsibility and love. Washington - The first draft was as mind-numbing as a tax form. Tuesday the Obama administration unveiled simplified application forms for health insurance benefits coming next year under the federal health care overhaul. The biggest change: a five-page short form that single people can fill out. That total includes a cover page with instructions, and an extra page to fill out if you want to designate someone to help you through the process. But the application form for families still runs to 12 pages, although most households will not have to fill out each and every page.

Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city.
