A 19-year-old woman accidentally shot dead her brother while posing with a gun for Facebook photos on New Year´s Eve. Manuel Ortiz died instantly after being shot in the head at about 6am on Monday morning. Family and friends wept as his body was carried from his apartment in Phoenix, Arizona, where the shooting took place. Police said 22-year-old Ortiz and his sister Savannah Ramirez arrived back at the home they shared on New Year’s Eve after spending the night drinking. They were with two other people when someone in the group pulled out the handgun to take photos with it. Source location added by staff
...sad, but I get the feeling that these are not your typical responsible, well-trained gun owners. Dims will see stories like these as ammo (sorry) for gun control. I propose lunatic control and now possibly ´wannabe gansta control´.
In times gone by, stupidity, ignorance, outlawry, and insanity were rewarded with early death. Now, our safety net is so thick that natural selection has been subverted, except in this particular case. Chainsaws make better toys than guns in the hands of drunks.
Put a gun in the hands of someone who isn´t used to handling them, and their finger will IMMEDIATELY go to the trigger. Further, the only responsible way to hand a gun to someone is with the magazine removed and the chamber open to show it is not loaded AFTER sticking your finger in the chamber and the barrel to confirm your visual inspection. Alcohol, loaded weapons, inexperienced users....whoever owned that weapon and allowed it to be passed around has at lot to answer for.
On Sunday December 17, 2012, 2 days after the CT shooting, a man went to a restaurant in San Antonio to kill his X-girlfriend. After he shot her, most of the people in the restaurant fled next door to a theater. The gunman followed them and entered the theater so he could shoot more people. He started shooting and people in the theater started running and screaming. It’s like the Aurora, CO theater story plus a restaurant!
Now aren’t you wondering why this wasn’t a lead story in the national media along with the school shooting?
There was an off duty county deputy at the theater. SHE pulled out her gun and shot the man 4 times before he had a chance to kill anyone. So since this story makes the point that the best thing to stop a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun, the media is treating it like it never happened. www.pakalertpress.com/2012/12/30/san-antonio-theater-shooting/
Rules for gun handlers number 1 through number 10. Never ever ever handle a gun while or after drinking. Rule #11, never ever ever put your finger on the trigger unless you intend to immediately shoot the gun. Rules #12 through #20, never ever ever aim a gun at anyone unless you INTEND to shoot them. See, twenty simple rules that any responsible gun owner knows and follows and that this idiot failed to follow.
Where is the mother saying, "they are such nice kids. He was my baby!"(Not much point in asking about the father). Well, we know they are/were stupid kids. They are the welfare culture we are producing. We´re just lucky in this instance they killed each other instead of someone that would have grown up and contributed something to society. A sad thing but these are dead end stupid people. The truth hurts.
1. Hooray for Darwin. 2. Too bad posters think the "English" of Fox News or ESPN is in fact English, and can´t be bothered to comprehend the least difference in sentence structure or word use. The Brit use here is correct. The modest amusement it offers hardly rates a dozen posts.
Hmm. My kids have been around guns for years (when I have them out of the safe to instruct them in firearm safety, take to the range or clean) and nothing like that has ever happened. Not even close. I´ve never even had an AD.
Sad, but it appears that there is one less gangbanger in Phoenix. Hey, he is the one flashing gang signs in the picture. Maybe he was pretending or not really in a gang. But guns, drinking, gang signs are a sign that you may not be a law abiding, decent guy.
Confusing headline for a tragic story. One can infer she shot her brother´s corpse.
I don´t want to make light of this, however. In far too many urban areas and their neighboring towns, thug elements like to celebrate the new year by shooting their guns randomly and otherwise playing with them. It´s no fun to do this, of course, unless they´re drunk, high or both. Stories like this are the result.
If there hadn´t been a photo of this, this woman may not have been arrested. No one around her would want to snitch, you know.
#37: Not "technically correct," but correct. The fact that this particular correct usage is more common in Britain than here is mere happenstance.
Consider: if it read "accidentally shoots brother in the head" the question of whether he lived is open. The headline´s use of "shoots dead" closes that issue. The construction is therefore not simply correct, but superior to typical American practice.
Last summer Ellen Holzman and Meredith Vezina, a married gay couple in San Diego County, got kicked off their long-term Kaiser health plan, for which they´d been paying more than $1,300 a month. The cause wasn´t the Affordable Care Act, as far as they knew. They´d been living outside Kaiser´s service area, and the health plan had decided to tighten its rules. That´s when they discovered the chilly hazards of dependence on the individual health insurance market. When they applied for a replacement policy with Anthem Blue Cross of California, Ellen, 59, disclosed that she might have carpal tunnel syndrome. She
Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest employer, announced Monday that 35,000 part-time employees will soon be moved to full-time status, entitling them to the full healthcare benefits that were scheduled to be denied them as a result of Wal-Mart’s efforts to avoid the requirements of Obamacare. While some analysts believe that the move comes as Wal-Mart is attempting to deal with the negative view many Americans have of its worker benefits program, a closer look reveals the real reason for the shift—
It’s no longer a surprise to hear about double-dippers — public servants who’ve managed to carve out two government paychecks or pensions for themselves. But state Rep. Robert Rita (D-Blue Island) and his brother John Rita Jr. could one-up that, each one day receiving three separate taxpayer-funded pensions, a total of six between them. “Yes, it’s unusual,” Robert Rita says. “But it’s not like we’re doing this because of the pensions. I’m from a family that’s dedicated to public service.”
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Parents were upset after Carrick High School approved a plan to have a Trayvon Martin theme day during the school’s homecoming. The homecoming committee, and school voted and approved the theme which is part of school spirit week. Parents were upset that kids were being encouraged to wear hoodies to school during the Wednesday theme.
A Tennessee high school has decided to revise its field trip policy after a group of freshmen were taken to an Islamic mosque where they were given copies of the Koran and while a student who opted out of the trip was given a worksheet that alleged Muslims treated their conquered people better than the United States treated minorities. The students were in an honors world studies class at Hendersonville High School and the field trips to the mosque as well as a Hindu temple were part of a three-week course on world religions.
COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Georgia teen convicted of fatally shooting a baby in a stroller was sentenced Thursday to spend the rest of his life in prison with no chance of parole after the grieving mother asked a judge to punish the gunman for taking "the love of my life." De´Marquise Elkins, 18, stood silent and showed no emotion as he was sentenced in a courtroom less than two weeks after a jury found him guilty of murder in the slaying of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago during a robbery attempt. "His first word was never heard. His first sentence was never said," Sherry
Washington police are operating under orders to arrest tourists and other non-residents traveling with spent bullet or shotgun casings, a crime that carries a $1,000 fine, a year in jail and a criminal record, according to a new book about the city´s confusing gun laws. "Empty shell casings are considered ammunition in Washington, D.C., so they are illegal to possess unless you are a resident and have a gun registration certificate," pens Emily Miller in her investigative book, "Emily Gets Her Gun: ... But Obama Wants to Take Yours." Under the law, live or empty brass and plastic casings must be carried
The question all week long was this: Who are you going to believe, an illegal alien or the president of the United States of America? Obviously, if it’s a president who once went by an alias, Barry Soetoro, you go with Uncle Omar, 100 percent, no questions asked. And so it was that the White House finally admitted to another, uh, misstatement — despite previous denials, Barack/Barry did sleep on his beloved Uncle Omar’s couch in Cambridge when he first moved here to attend Harvard Law School (speaking of which, we’re still waiting to see the president’s grades and his LSAT scores). But the
More young men in California rise in pitch at the end of their sentences when talking, new research shows. This process is known as "uptalk" or "valleygirl speak" and has in the past been associated with young females, typically from California or Australia. But now a team says that this way of speaking is becoming more frequent among men.The findings were presented at the Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in California. "We found use of uptalk in all of our speakers, despite their diverse backgrounds in socioeconomic status, ethnicity, bilingualism and gender," said Amanda Ritchart, a linguist at the University of
How do you get your arms around the catastrophe known as Obamacare? Is it even possible? At this point, I’m not sure it is. The list of individual disasters which threaten to ruin one-sixth of the U.S. economy and what has been, up until now, the best healthcare system in the world is exhaustive, and exhausting. The examples I will identify here barely scratch the surface. First but by no means foremost, we have the supposedly new and improved HealthCare.gov. Except it’s not, even the visible part. Stories still abound of people still failing to get in or to get through the enrollment
DAVID CORN: I saw a president who remains frustrated with the political-media culture that he has to work within, and that he´s looking to rally people, students here, and supporters, and people within the media. CHRIS MATTHEWS: But David Corn, you skeptic. He came to us today. He came amongst us. CORN: He´s trying to rally people behind this vision that he´s been promoting for a couple years. FINEMAN: By the way, he did it the end here, today, Chris, not by defending specifics, but by explaining why he´s in the game to begin with. And I don´t know about you, he´s
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a new five-year strategic plan to improve safety for elderly drivers and passengers. Although they are statistically among the safest on the road, the number of older drivers is increasing dramatically — and with it, that group´s numbers of injuries and deaths. Since 2003, the population of older adults, defined as age 65 and older, has increased by 20% and the number of licensed older drivers increased by 21% to 35 million in 2012, according to NHTSA. Last year, NHTSA reported that 5,560 people older than 65 died and 214,000 were injured
The most curious thing of all about the November jobs report released on Friday was the huge drop in the unemployment rate — and the fact that the Labor Department chose not to disclose that the data going into that figure are under investigation for falsification. On Nov. 19, I broke the news in my column that the Census Bureau, which collects data that goes into the jobless rate on behalf of Labor, had caught one of its enumerators fabricating interviews in 2010. The culprit said back then (and to me during an interview) that he was told to do so by
