In an about face, House Speaker
Boehner promises quick action on $60
billion in Hurricane Sandy aid

New York Daily News, by Joseph Straw , Erin Durkin

Facing a storm of outrage, House Speaker John Boehner did an about face Wednesday and promised to quickly pass $60 billion in Hurricane Sandy aid - a day after abruptly canceling a vote on the package.Officials from New York and surrounding states had spent much of the day blasting Boehner for initially yanking the Sandy aid from consideration. Some of the fiercest criticism came from fellow Republicans. His voice shaking, Rep. Pete King (R-Long Island) took to the House floor Wednesday morning to launch an extraordinary attack on Boehner, his political leader.

Wow, no surprise here. Can someone, anyone, please tell Boehner it is time to resign.

Just go away.

Is Pete King a conservative only when the money is needed somewhere else?Christy?

Get the pork out of the bill first, then vote on it.

Storm relief isn´t the federal governments job anyway.

Could it be that this was his plan all along and that it´s not an "about face" at all? Could it be he wanted to deal with the "fiscal cliff", get it off his plate, then immediately get cracking on Sandy aid?

Shouldn´t get one dime. If you need flood insurance, get out your local Yellow Pages and call one of the phone numbers.

Plus, see how NJ Transit lost hundreds of millions of dollars of railroad cars because they left them in the flood plain. NYC Police did something as stupid as well with one of their auto impound facilities.

Why reward incompetence?

But I thought all these celebrities solved al, the Sandy problems with their stupid concert...

To be fair, Christie threatened to eat him.

Typical. If $10 billion will do, throw $60 billion at it. And if anyone objects then they are just cruel and heartless. Just a fine example of why we are in the financial mess we are in.

And it appears the only way to ever right this sinking liberaalized ship is for it all to collapse.

So don´t be too scared. Whatever we must go through will simply be what must happen when the parasite of liberalism finds a host and sucks the lifeblood out of it.

As it always does. It´s coming.

Pork, pork, pork...so sick of the waste. Our congresscritters do not represent the interest of the taxpayers.

A lesson about insurance:
Insurance for your home is purchased from the company of your choice, for fire, theft, etc. In my state, an additional Hurrican policy can be purchased, again from the company of choice..it is expensive, and carries a 2% of total value of home deductible.
Flood insurance is NOT sold by insurance companies, but can be purchased from FEMA.
I carry all three and pay the premiums.
My understanding is that FEMA has not paid a single claim in NJ or NY after 66 days.

Reply 11 - Posted by: Chuzzles, 1/3/2013 8:39:00 AM     (No. 9096121)

Can you imagine the outrage at Bush if that situation had been going on after Katrina #11? Maybe King and Boehner need to direct their ire at Obama and FEMA instead of ripping off the taxpayers with another edition of the pork express.

Reply 12 - Posted by: MisterDickens, 1/3/2013 8:45:27 AM     (No. 9096134)

#11, thanks for the lesson on insurance but I can´t afford the insurance because the payment on my BMW consumes too much of my discretionary funds.

Well, I guess that´s not the whole reason. We like to eat out often at Ruth´s Chris Steakhouse, too. And then there´s my wife´s penchant for shopping at Neiman´s and our need to vacation in Europe every year. Oh, and there´s that pesky house payment, itself, which we could only qualify for through shenanigans.

Those, #11, are the reasons you need to pay for my loss instead of expecting me to cover it myself. God you´re heartless, #11.

There were too many riders (pork) on the bill, for GitMo, Alaska, Ohio, Georgia. And this was the week when the GOP was trying to limit spending!
The Speaker has promised to start presenting another bill tomorrow and I believe him.
And...why hasn´t FEMA paid out any money yet? Are they expecting the taxpayers to bail out the NE?

Reply 14 - Posted by: DCGIRL, 1/3/2013 9:33:20 AM     (No. 9096245)

For the people that had flood insurance, FEMA is responsible to make payment to them.

I get the feeling that if you think Boehner is wrong then you approve the billions of pork that was stuffed into the bill.
Well, I don´t approve of it and think those responsible should be held accountable. Let them be the ones to explain to those waiting for help as to why they aren´t getting it.

Maybe it should be paid for by Obamacare as a preexisting condition.

Everyone has their hand out to the American voter. We have become a nation of beggars. Personal responsibility has gone by the wayside. The choices you make regarding where you want to live has consequences. I can´t understand why some Americans are more equal than others. Some parts of the country receive aid and others get nothing. Who make these decisions? One thing is for cetain these aid bills need to stand alone.

Reply 21 - Posted by: Heil Liberals, 1/3/2013 11:04:25 AM     (No. 9096473)

I think it is important to remember that this is all George W. Bush´s fault. After all, if Brownie had not left FEMA in such bad shape during and after Katrina, then The Won would not have inherited this FEMA mess that he is "hard at work" to clean up and make right. Had Bush done the job correctly Ears would have more time to jet to Hawaii and play golf with his fellow problem solvers. As it is he has to give up multiple rounds of golf each week in order to focus on the TOTUS, solver of all Bush problems. Had Bush had such a miracle device as the All Knowing, All Seeing TOTUS, then all would be right with the United States as The Won leads us to the Marxist promised land.

Gosh the man does change his mind like the wind blowing. He is always going to stand firm on something and then he caves, wish washy. As far as the aid bill for hurricane Sandy clean it up remove all the pork.

Hurricanes, in my area, are a fact of life. Buy insurance and if you live in a flood zone buy flood insurance. On some policies you can add a rider for cost of living coverage when an incident occurs that makes your home uninhabitable.

One of my former graduate students works at FEMA. And when I asked her why katrina ´victims´ are still dispersed around the U.S., living in hotels, all expenses paid, she said ´because they have lawyers.´

If people choose to live on or near the water, and fail to have proper insurance, why should my tax money go to them?? Anyone have an answer for that?

#16, if you are referring to the Congress´s actions, it is simple as to why there are still people ´waiting for help´.
Government sucks at doing, and when your Governor is ADDICTED to Federal dollars and has NO CLUE how to govern or lead this is what you get.

Maybe, just maybe my fellow NJ´ers can follow the lead of the Missippian´s example and GET OFF THEIR ARSES AND GET WORKING.

Or, sit there in your FEMA motel and complain. I guess I know what the neutered American Males will choose.

Never again let me hear that somoeone is OWED respect, if you are sucking off of your baby momma´s Welfare teat, you are worthy of NOTHING.

Six years ago, when John McCain, the Arizona senator, last worked on an immigration bill, his partner was Ted Kennedy, of Massachusetts. On a recent morning, McCain sat in his dimly lit office, across the street from the Senate, and said how much he missed Kennedy. Gang of 8 vs. VAWA: Byron York notes some of the shortcomings of the pending Gang of 8 bill’s treatment of illegal immigrants with criminal records: You’re only blackballed when you are convicted of three misdemeanors–an achievement, given the tendency of overworked prosecutors to accept misdemeanor pleas for felony charges. Even three misdemeanors can be waived by Janet Napolitano–or whoever is Secretary of DHS–”in the public interest.” And you have to have been convicted of the misdemeanors on separate days. …

Last Thursday evening, I had the privilege, for the eighth consecutive year, of acting as master of ceremonies for the Annual Dinner of the Center of the American Experiment. This year’s dinner featured Dr. Benjamin Carson, one of the most eminent physicians in the United States, whose speech at the National Prayer Breakfast made him a household name. There was a lot of excitement about Dr. Carson’s appearance, and 1,000 people, a sellout crowd, attended the dinner. I had the opportunity to spend some time with Dr. Carson before the event began.

Among the recent revelations about the NSA was the PRISM program, which tech companies have denied participating in. According to a New York Times report, one of those companies, Yahoo, fought back in 2008 against the government requests on the grounds that it would be unconstitutional — but failed. Thus, the company became part of the program. “The government had sought help in spying on certain foreign users, without a warrant,

A bit of news for members of Congress on their way home for the weekend: America hates you. Nearly eight in 10 Americans told Gallup pollsters this month they disapprove of the way Congress is handing its job, the 45th consecutive month that more than two-thirds of Americans graded Congress poorly. The problem isn´t as much what Congress is doing as what it is not getting done. Fifty-nine percent of the disapproving Americans cited partisan gridlock and ineffectiveness for their thumbs-down. Fewer than 30 percent cited performance on specific issues or ethics. It gets worse.

NEW YORK Until now, much of the debate swirling around Obamacare has focused on the cost of premiums in the state-based health insurance exchanges. But what will enrollees actually get for that monthly charge? States are starting to roll out details about the exchanges, providing a look at just how affordable coverage under the Affordable Care Act will be. Some potential participants may be surprised at the figures: $2,000 deductibles, $45 primary care visit co-pays, and $250 emergency room tabs.

Amid a steady rise of backlash, Edward Snowden, the 29-year-old former National Security Agency contractor who was the source of a spring of leaks about the agency´s surveillance methods, conducted a live chat on The Guardian´s website Monday morning. Judging from some of the pointed questions he´s been asked and the reaction to newly leaked revelations over the past few days, it´s clear that much of the sympathy and support Snowden had built up for his early exposures is eroding. Many Americans supported his decision to leak information about a pair of National Security Agency surveillance programs, which, he detailed, gathered information

Five months into his second term, allies and enemies are as confounded as ever about who President Obama really is. Is he the dyed-in-the-wool liberal that his biggest supporters and critics suggest? Or is he a pragmatic, even cynical, politician who cares more for his popularity than taking risks for his ideological goals or living up to his rhetoric? Even in the short period since his reelection, Obama has provided evidence to support conflicting interpretations. His efforts to pass immigration reform, the unsuccessful push for stricter gun controls and tax hikes on high earners buttress the case for Obama-as-ideologue.

Charlie Rose last night asked President Obama his new Syria policy. The president first objected to it being called a new policy. "I´m not sure you can characterize this as a new policy. This is consistent with the policy that I´ve had throughout," he said. Obama then explained the goal is regional stability, and especially in Syria. "Really, what we´re trying to do is take sides against extremists of all sorts and in favor of people who are in favor of moderation, tolerance, representative government, and over the long-term, stability and prosperity for the people of Syria," said Obama.

Marco Rubio. Paul Ryan. The IRS. Illegal immigration. And fraud to the tune of billions.. Now there’s a combustible mix. Let’s start with the IRS, illegal immigration and fraud. We’ll come back in a minute to Senator Rubio and Congressman Ryan. For those who came in late, a year before the IRS scandals burst onto the scene in early May of 2013, an alert investigative reporter for WTHR-Indianapolis (Channel 13), Bob Segall by name, produced a stunning piece of journalism. Segall’s video report is found here and we will quote from his story for the basics.
