| Conservatives have lost the messaging battle on taxes. The public has bought into the notion that they exclusively care about keeping taxes on the rich low (at the expense of the middle class) and that the growth effects of disguised spending (tax credits) are the same as marginal rate reductions. But stepping back to survey the larger picture, it looks like conservatives have won the war. Beginning with Ronald Reagan’s Economic Recovery Tax Act, conservatives have waged a 30-year war over low tax rates. Consider that in 1979

"It could have been worse" isn´t the point.
Here´s what bothers me, especially the last phrase which I´ve bolded:
The tax code remains in need of a fundamental overhaul to improve its international competitiveness (a lower corporate rate and a move to a territorial tax system), growth incentives, and the appearance of fairness.
Who sets what "appears" to be fair? It´s always the Left who set the bar of fairness. First, "fairness" is not part of the tax code and shouldn´t be. The tax code should set a number or a percentage that all taxpayers should abide by. By doing that, it´s "fair".
But I deeply resent that the GOP never talks about the Left setting the bar for what is "fair". Were I a congressman or Senator when Obama brings up "fairness", I´d ask him if flitting around on AF1 on OUR tax dollars is fair, while his policies have cut millions of jobs out of the public sector.
And that´s just for starters. If I hear "fairness" from the Left again, I´m going to break something.

The purpose of taxation is to fund the services of government. The burden should be spread over all citizens. There should be no argument over that. The only argument we should be having is what we chose to fund. And I wouldn´t fund more than half og what government presently spends.

I don´t think people have bought into anything. As for conservatives losing, I think it has been conservatives winning, and GOP go along get along types losing.

I do not believe the public has bought the idea. Our reps and senators just say that to justify their own greed for more power more money. Did you know they lie in Washington D.C.?

A FREE press in a democracy demands a delicate balance. The First Amendment means the media must have the right to inquire without hindrance. The government has a legitimate interest in keeping some national security information secret. When these come into conflict, the balance often has been struck this way: The media are free to pursue secrets, but it is up to those in government to keep them. When the media come into possession of information that, if disclosed, could be damaging, the government can plead the case for secrecy — and the media generally are open to persuasion.

The brutal murder of an off-duty soldier by two Muslim activists continues to dominate the news in Great Britain. The scene was utterly bizarre: in broad daylight, in a busy section of London, the two Muslims apparently ran the soldier down with a car, within a block or two of his barracks, and then attacked him with knives and a meat cleaver. A day after insurers complained that Kathleen Sebelius and the Obama administration had pressured them to fund Enroll America, a House committee sent them a request for more information on the matter. President Obama delivered an address today at the National Defense University called “The Future of our Fight Against Terrorism.” Actually, part of the speech was about the past, including much self-congratulation and some shots at President Bush. This part of the speech is revisionist rubbish. As Max Boot explains: Obama said, for example, that after he came into office, “we unequivocally banned torture, affirmed our commitment to civilian courts, worked to align our policies with the rule of law, and expanded our consultations with Congress.” Umm, actually all of that happened in Bush’s second term.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- The Interstate 5 bridge over the Skagit River collapsed Thursday evening, injuring an unknown number of people. Both the northbound and southbound portions of the bridge dropped into the river sometime before 7 p.m., according to Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis. Francis said several cars were on the bridge when it collapsed, and some are now in the water. Bart Treece with the Washington State Department of Transportation was unsure when the bridge was last inspected. "All of our bridges in the area are pretty old," he said.

When you get right down to it, the political targeting and stalling of tax-exempt applications by the IRS was an effort to defund the Tea Party. Rick Santelli, one of the Tea Party founders and my CNBC colleague, was the first to make this point. Conservative radio host Mark Levin is very skeptical of the idea that President Obama had absolutely no idea about the IRS tea party targeting before the story broke in the news mere weeks ago. Levin declared adamantly that it is a “flat-out, bald-faced lie” that Obama didn’t know beforehand, citing prior reports by a few conservative news outlets picking up on the news well before the 2012 presidential election. Levin said, “I don’t believe for two seconds that Obama wasn’t aware of this.”

The fact that this bit of information was conveyed to the protesters by a Department of Homeland Security officer who was also in attendance. On “Fox News Sunday” last weekend, White House aide Dan Pfeiffer was asked about President Barack Obama’s whereabouts the night of the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi. This was the night when we lost our first ambassador in 30 years, and when three other Americans were killed in an attack that lasted all night long at multiple locations within the eastern Libyan city. Since the president is commander in chief, one would think where he was and what he did during such an event would be of obvious public concern.
